maybe a dumb question about background data?

So my question is what is the difference between background data and auto sync?

My guess is auto sync is for Google contacts, email, etc and background data is for Widgets, etc that need data? Is that correct? I use tasker to kill auto sync when my phone is unplugged but I am wondering exactly what is the difference and his much battery does auto sync actually use?

I'm guessing back ground data is for things like weather, facebook, etc. Auto sync is for your email, calendar, tasks, etc.
