ok so i recently came from verizon wireless and the man there stated that in order to complete the update process you have to factory reset your phone is this true or did i just do it for no reason at all??

To clarify...a factory data reset only clears out all the user specific data-passwords, apps, .db files, etc. All it does is format the /data partition. A FR doesnt touch the /system partition where all the files relevant to the OS are found.
What this means is that if you did an update, an FR isnt going to "undo" those changes.
What I think he means is not that he wants to undo the changes, just that he is curious as to if a factory reset is necessary after an update.
I also assume you are talking about the update that went OTA July 17th.
No, a factory reset is never "necessary" to complete an update. It will work if you don't perform one. However, it helps a GREAT deal if you do a factory reset after an update, as many users on here seem to report resets fixing issues they have. It's highly recommended that you do it.
