Maybe this is why Samsung doesnt give a ...

My wife and I just got our Captivates. We will have them for at about two years until our contract is up. My wife is not very tech oriented and mostly talks on her phone with occasional texting. She did actually use it the other day to look up something on the internet so there is hope for her. I would like to have Froyo but I can wait. While I'm sure there are other advantages to Froyo the only thing I'm interested in at the moment that 2.1 doesn't have is the ability to voice dial which I understand Froyo does have.

If Samsung and AT&T don't come through with upgrades and keep up with what other phones and carriers provide I'll take that into consideration when it comes time to renew my contract and upgrade my phone.

Oh and I suspect the vast majority of Captivate owners know little or nothing about the Samsung, AT&T, Froyo controversy and are quite happily going about their business using there phones. And Samsung and AT&T know that and are therefore not overly concerned about the few negative voices here and elsewhere.

I think we all just need to be a little more content with what we purchased. Its not a half bad device and even though there are problems (like with the GPS and whatnot), it's still one of the best phones on the market, Froyo or not.
Yes, there may be phones expected to release this new year (even Samsung phones) that make our Captivates look like cavemen toys, but the same cycle will happen to them the next year. And we'll be eligible to upgrade again.

I love my Captivate. Everyone I show it to, including other Android phones and the iPhone 4, is just blown away.

As for GPS, if I need to use it (and I'm a former gas/diesel truck driver, so don't really need it)... I use my Magellan GPS anyways.

Ok guys.. I hate to say this..

But, lets be real here..

This is AT&T and SAMSUNG.

First... Samsung is KNOWN for doing this. Sure it is a bit annoying they are doing it again but, one of the first post I read on this forum about the captivate was warning of this exact issue a long time ago.

Next- Even if it wasn't for samsung, I am willing to bet at&t is causing its fair share of problems.

At&t is well known for screwing up every non iphone update to a phone for the past 3 years!

Like to think that would change because, android is a lot more update heavy.. but, lets be real here.. I remember a post back when I had my e71x people discussing how at&t and nokia were either A. never going to update the phone.. and B. If they did they would fix one thing and break 3 others... and that would be that for updates.

If there were other phones out there supporting Gingerbread or even Froyo on at&t.. I could cut this some slack.

But, lets be real. Even if the other samsung phone's were getting a steady diet of froyo and gingerbread.. that doesn't mean we would...

At this point.. I just hope *IF* samsung decides to update the phone.. they bump it straight to gingerbread..

Anyway.. final thought.. I noticed someone commenting about how the devs are the only thing saving this phone.

Well... to that I say... "so?". Devs couldn't save the E71X or a lot of other phone's that could have been great for their time.

If I were on any other network.. I would be surprised by the fact that such great hardware was wasted on what I will call flat out malpractice by the manufacturer.

But, I'm not.. I'm on at&t. Home of the "LOL UPDATE? NO THX!".

I am not defending samsung.. but, I am trying to remind everyone what network we are on, and what manufacturer we are dealing with.

Did anyone with prior knowledge of samsung OR at&t really not see this coming?

All I can say is.. devs to save the phone is a lot more than any other at&t has going for it.

hehe they are calling the Infuse 4.5" a Galaxy S phone. So now when Samsung India said that Galaxy S will get Gingerbread, that doesn't mean our iteration of Galaxy S. :(

Think I might have to upgrade to this "Infuse" hehe...

I'm 6 months into a two year contract, will I get any credit towards a new phone? Anybody know?

I'm guessing I can get about 300 for a Captivate on Ebay?

Infuse will probably be like the Evo too, super popular and backordered for months...we'll see.

I'm confused though, I thought Samsung's next phone was called the Galaxy S 2 and was a dual core monster (some Russian phone expert got one early and tweeted about it being an absolute beast).

This isn't dual core, though it is 1.2 ghz, and seems more like a possible "tweener" product imo. Or a specialty large screen product. This is not the Galaxy S 2.

Still, I am all about large screens. Love my brother's 4.3" Evo. So I think I would rather have a 4.5" screen than even dual core or Gingerbread. I'll be happy with this. 1.2 ghz isn't a bad consolation prize either. Plus it has the next gen of Super Amoled, and front facing cam, and the GPS probably works perfectly, and hopefully flash (last two not confirmed, but I think working GPS is almost a given). And Pseudo 4G...

I have to assume samsung was able to work out the bugs by now.

That goes for this whole phone. As far as I know Galaxy S was the first REALLY high end Samsung phone so they probably learned a lot and worked out a lot of bugs. I know it's cool to hate on Samsung here so you guys wont believe that but I think it's true.

Anyways, the GPS on my Captivate works ok, it's just not ideal. And I consider the Captivate a good phone too, just with some problems, like any phone.

The main reason people seem to hate it here is that it hasnt got 2.2 yet. Which I agree is annoying because 2.2 has flash, and I want that. However, in the scheme of things, I think obsessing over small Android updates is stupid and not something 99.999% of people should or do care about. Once it gets 2.2 I will no longer care. I wont be obsessing over the minor update that is 2.3.

Great... the next top-of-the-line AT&T Android phone is still going to be a Samsung? Urgh.

HTC, I'm looking at you. Step up to the plate here.

You sir, have failed. The SGS is one of the best phones on the market. Samsung is slow to update but they still made a great phone(s). You make it sound like it is as bad as the Iphone for crying out loud!

You must be new here. :)

Yep though I like my Captivate, it's likely my first and last Samsung phone.

No worry though, at&t is launching 12 Android handsets this year. There's the Motorola dual-core Atrix 4G (prolly only HSPA+). There are a few HTC's coming to at&t too.

I like my captivate I don't "love" it. The screen is ridiculous awesome. I use the gps on the phone all time and the fact that mine sucks is a killer. I get tired of hearing it from my latitude iphone friends that are all shown in the right place and I'm off in the creek somewhere.

I have looked at the lineup and I think the Infuse still may top it for me.

The Atrix is dual core, but no word on the screen, or I think 4". To me I'll take extra .5" screen over dual core I think.

The Inspire is 4.3", standard LCD screen.

Infuse tops them all in my most important category, with 4.5 screen. Plus superamoled plus..

I dont love my Galaxy S either, mostly because of the finicky for me capacitive buttons and GPS. However the Infuse is still going to be tough to beat.

I have to say, everything Snow_Fox is saying would apply to Rogers in Canada as well. I am currently using an HTC Magic with Rogers, and an LG Eve, I have a Captivate on the way (being shipped today).

Rogers updates for Android have been a joke since day one. Just Google Rogers Android 1.6

Just pop into a HTC forum or any other phone forum for that matter and the complaints look like duplicates of this Captivate forum. Some people just love to complain. No device is perfect and as the saying goes.......the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence.

By the way, I bought a smart phone, not a gps. I bought a Garmin GPS for the car and don't expect it to make phone calls.

Also my Captivate has always supported flash since I got rid of the stock rom. This obsession that people have with 2.2 is crazy. What's going to happen if and when 2.2 is released for the Captivate? Is it going to solve all problems? Of course not. It probably won't solve any. Then people will be complaining and waiting for 2.3. I guess it's just the nature of forums like this. There are millions of people out there perfectly happy with their Captivates. They're just not logging in here and telling us about it.

Just my 2 cents.

Your two cents are spot on, the update will come and when it does, everyone will complain that 2.3 isn't released yet. I think the frustration really is justified though by the lack or or inconsistent communication from both the manufacturers and the carriers.

The only thing I disagree with is that you suggest that we should need to buy a seperate GRP unit, if it's included as a feature of the phone, it should work and you shouldn't need a standalone unit.

THANK YOU, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A DEDICATED GPS!

While I do think having a GPS in a phone is nice.. and a great "oh no.. this is an emergency and I don't have a GPS on me" utility..

I really don't want to rely on my phone as the only possible tech I have if I ever really need tech.

I mean.. if you have to travel long distances do you REALLY expect to have a 3g connection the entire way?

I do think that is should work properly.. but, I also don't think the GPS in phones was ever really designed to completely replace a stand alone GPS to begin with..

I know there are other problems with the phone.. but, the fact that the devs even back the phone up and give us a reason to jump on it is amazing.

More than any other at&t phone up till now has even been capable of.

And well +1 to the person who mentioned other forums mirroring this one :/

All the people with motorola are mad they are still on 2.1.. or just got it and don't know if they will ever get 2.2..

I am also tired of people talking about X phone as if it is the second coming of christ..

They are gunna be right back in here 6 months with some new problem they got in exchange for leaving the captivate.

TBH. If I ever get around to at&t I may actually pick up a captivate tomorrow.

Why? sure.. a lot of new stuff coming out right around the corner..

But, at least the captivate ALREADY has
A. root.
B. Roms.
C. problems fixed by devs without needing roms if you prefer stock.
D. WE KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARE

I really don't wish anyone ill out there.. but, when Tegra 2 comes back with a overheating issues.. or other random problems with its programming.

Try not to be too surprised like a deer in the head lights..

There are always problems with first gen tech..

Its definitely first gen tech.

I say **** 'em. I spent the money on giving Samsung their 100%+ profit on the phone, with their free OS. If they want to abuse open source, I will abuse them.

Because, samsung totally didn't spend millions in research and development!

And they totally got the materials used to make the phone from charity right?

I generally know where I am at, and love Google Maps. I have never needed a GPS to tell me exactly where I am or that I need to turn in 25'. To me the GPS is more of a toy. If it works to within 50 or 100', then your weather will work. So, the GPS issue is really a stretch as far as a complaint about this amazing device.

And yet, if something is advertized as a feature, it really should actually work.

"Congratulations, Mr. Smith, surgery was successful, and your new Samsung pacemaker is woking as advertized. Uh, Mr. Smith? Oops."
