Help Media Volume - too low

Yeah. Hmmm strange, mine are coloured green? Not sure if that makes a difference cos my headphones are soooo quiet with the Sony earphones but with the supplied HTC ones it is proper loud! Will have to try some more earphones simply cos the HTC ones don't fit in my ears!

Ok, tried the HTC supplied headphones, 3 black lines and its the same as my 2 black lines headphones. Ill need to try and dig out ones with green lines, see if that makes a difference.

Volume is great on mine, equal if not better than my iPhone. Pity there is no EQ edit functions.

Two black lines.
Sennheiser CX200

I use a pair of Sennheiser headphone (with in-built volume switch), sound when using these is really loud......enough to annoy people 3m away, with crystal clear base and treble. And that's without turning media volume up to max......

I have just tried my friends Sony earphones, different model but again has same 2 green lines on the jack point and again low volume. I think I need to try someone's who has a different brand to be honest..........!

Agreed, the max volume level when using headphones on the Desire is way too low. I know there's a European requirement to limit the db level on audio devices, but this is just too much. I switched from the Motorola Milestone (with its audio skipping and random playback startups) for this - I'm just not having any luck with mobile music.

Interesting... I use a PX200 Sennheiser headphone (2 black lines) and I always set the volume to about 60-70% and it would be borderline too loud while I'm walking next to traffic. Have yet to try it in the sub though...

I'm using Skullcandy titans and with the inline control set just below halfway and the media volum on the lowest setting they're plenty loud for me (they are the ear bud type if that makes a difference, they're a lot louder than my previous foam in-ear headphones but I assume that's because they block out more background noise).

2 black lines. Some reasonably priced wharfdale ear buds. usually great, really poor on the desire.

I have also recently purchased an HTC Desire with the intention of moving away from my iPhone 3GS. In most respects the Desire is great, however, it is UNUSABLE as a media player in anything but a complete silent room. Its use on a train, out walking, cycling etc is hopeless as the volume is just not loud enough to block out any external noise no matter how quiet. I have tried many different headphones from cheap to expensive and the result is the same (and these headphones work perfectly on an iphone).

I also work with 2 other people who have recently bought a desire and have *exactly* the same issue.

This for me is a deal breaker and imho this phone is not fit for purpose. With great reluctance I will be going back to the iPhone until this is fixed...

I have a pair of Sennheiser iphone headphones, (used to have an iPhone).

Sennheiser MM 50 Headset for iPhone: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

And they're great - the mic works as well. I have to be careful the media volume is down low when I first switch on as they are extremely loud on full volume. I can't hear much else when I've got these in my ears and music playing. Three black rings.

The speaker is crap but I never use it. Anyone who plays music out loud in public from a phone needs a public flogging anyhow.

I got a t-mobile phone and the headphone volume was far too low. I flashed a generic ROM and this fixed the problem. Worked perfectly.

Just carefully follow thy instructions at XDA, modaco or here on debranding and this takes 30 minutes. So much happier with my phone now!

This is really odd, would the banding having anything to do with the volume on the device? The quality/bit rate of the audio file? I'm on contract with orange.

I know that my hearing isn't quite what it should be as I spent my youth bouncing round speaker stacks as big as a small house.

I've tried several different quality/styles of music with the standard earphones my Shure SE115's. The SE115's they are the base Shure model but still pretty decent. The SE115's have 2 black lines on the jack.

The media volume does have to be up to the max with the stand phones and the sound isolation isn't as good as the Shure's but for a standard pair its more than acceptable.

I use to have a Nokia 5800 what was billed as a music phone but the audio playback was appalling. You were able to hold a conversation while listening to music at full wack and became completely useless outside.

How loud earphones are has nothing to do with 'black' or 'green' lines. All they are there for is the insulate the ground, left signal and right signal from each other. If you have a mic built in then the extra conductor is for that.

Earphone loudness is dependent on the impedance of the earphones, the lower the impedance of the set the louder they will be.

I can say from explicit personal experience that the T-Mobile ROM limits the media volume to two or three clicks off the unbranded maximum. I flashed a generic ROM and my volume was SIGNIFICANTLY louder. The Orange ROM (AFAIK) does not limit the volume from the level of the generic ROM. I've no experience of other stock ROMs.

Hope this helps!

Mine is pathetic as well. To the extent that when I am travelling in the tube and the volume is set at max, I hear the tube's rumble more than I hear the song that is playing on my phone.
Sighhh. :(
Read somewhere that all t-mobile desires have this issue.

I have a Desire HD on Orange and the volume on the radio is pathetic. May be that Orange and T-mobile use each other's connections.

Why are you listening to the speaker on the Tube? Isn't that annoying for others around you?

I have an unbranded Desire (running on T-Mobile) and the volume is lower than my old iPhone through the same Sony earphones.
It's manageable though especially with Poweramp because you can boost the gain (too high and it turns into a distorted mess though!)
As for using the internal phone speaker... just lol

The iPhone used to really belt it out through the earbuds compared to the Desire.

I have seen a lot of complaints about the volume on T-Mobile branded Desires.

I haven't found a single way of increasing my phone's (galaxy s) media volume limit that doesn't require phone to be rooted. Max volume is shockingly low especially when plugged into a portable speaker - you notice the difference compared to my old ipod. Not 100% sure on this but I suspect governments are starting to limit max volume limits in portable devices because of long term hearing loss - why else would a company like Samsung release a product with a volume so obviously low - I mean is it any skin off their backs to bump up the volume a little??? it's not a cost issue!!
