Help Memory for apps.

Due for an upgrade in August so just being having a look to see whats on offer and whats potentially in the pipe line.

I must say though I'm more than disappointed to see that most of the HTC's only have around 1GB internal storage!

Am I missing something here ie can all the apps be moved onto SD card now or something?

It still seems like a ridiculously low amount of storage if the above isnt the case.

Any info much appreciated.

3 things.

Firstly, 1GB in relation to the likes of 8/16/32 GB available on iPhone's etc may seem a little. But the difference is that on Android, we have 1GB internal, and up to 32GB external via a micro sd slot standard on most phones. Keep reading to see the significance of this...

Remember on iPhone's there is only internal memory. That means both the app and the app data must be on that 8/16/32GB internal memory. On Android, we have 1GB internal and up to 32GB external. That means the app can be split if you like between the two.

Let's take Gameloft's new racing game Asphalt 6, available on both Android and iPhone. On iPhone, that app is 559mb. You might think on Android, that would be half your memory. But that's not the case. On Android, that app is only 21mb which goes onto the phones internal memory. Then, the app data (539mb) is downloaded to your SD card instead. So the app goes to internal, the app data to external. Meaning only 21mb of that 1gb is used.

Thirdly, most apps are less than 3mb in size. Only games like that, Angry Birds and any video apps etc tend to go over that. And even then, they rarely get larger than 20mb. That means really you can store an average of over 250 apps with 1GB internal memory.

I hope that makes sense. 1GB is big on Android, as it operates differently. "Apps" are split. The app itself > 1gb internal memory, the app data > external micro sd. The chances of you filling that are absolutely minimal. And if you really don't like the idea... buy a nexus s. They have 16GB internal, just like an iPhone (no ext sd either though).

Thanks for the info and taking time to explain.:)

Its just with the desire I am constantly getting the 'low on space' notification and have to delete apps to make way for new ones.

Im surprised to see apps like flash player, Maps, Gmail,Market etc cant be moved to SD and do take up quite a bit on the desires very limited space.

I would of thought it wouldnt kill HTC to bump the internal memory up a bit, surely 8gb chips cant cost much these days!

Once again thanks for the info.

Although I have been looking at the LG 3D:D

You say you keep getting the low space notification...

1. Are you rooted?
2. Are you running froyo?
3. Have you tried forcing more apps to sd?

It probably wouldn't cost much more to add 8GB no. But I don't think it's really needed. Having an external micro sd gives the user much more choice, and that's what Android is all about. And it makes it ideal for holidays etc if you need to take more photos. And the new devices like the samsung galaxy s include both 16GB internal memory and an external micro sd slot, making for a potential 48GB memory.

Maps, flash, gmail and market are on the system partition so aren't cutting into your "user app" space. 1GB is plenty.

With the standard desire, I have had to cut some corners and root, but 100+ apps is taking up less than 200MB of my 360MB available (including some big apps like cordy and angry birds. so with that in mind, you could get upto 500 apps on 1GB. Who needs that?

ATM I have 52 apps(including everything) and only 15Mb left.

The phone is rooted but not running anything fancy as I had a problem with the Wifi not working and tried to get it back to standard but couldnt work out how to do it so get fed up and stopped messing about with the phone.

Software number is 2.29.405.2
