Help "Message not sent" error, driving me crazy.

I have the same problem with one of my contacts. It refuses to send a text to his contact. If I manually add the number straight in to the To: box then it DOES send the text.

If I delete the SMS thread it doesn't send the text message.

If I delete the contact and recreate it it doesn't send the text message.

If I add his number to a known working contact, eg the girlfriend, then I can send a text successfully by selecting my girlfriend's contact (mobile num 2).

It's not a solution, but is a workaround for now.

Found a solution for my problem.

Deleted the problem contact.
Synced contacts with google.
Created new contact, with contact name as the mobile number then added the number.
Sent text to contact 077668etc. To make sure it worked.
Rename contact and give it a proper name.
Delete old text thread.
Send new text to renamed contact.

I found this on Motorola Forums and it worked for me without deleting any contacts.
Good Luck!

"The real problem appears to be that the default "Text Messaging" app does not show you a failed message queue, but will continually try to resend them. The good news is that Handcent shows you this queue and allows you to delete these messages. You do not need to continue to use Handcent, just use it to delete undelivered messages. Make sure to turn off Handcent's notifications if you plan to keep it installed as a deletion utility.
Solution:
1. Install Handcent SMS from Android Marketplace
2. Launch Handcent SMS
3. Press Menu Button >> More + >> Undelivered messages
4. Here you can delete undelivered conversations and end your "messages not sent" woes!"

Have you face "Unable To Send Text Until Service Is Available"? I just sent sms out after a few days try and error and search a lot of forum to find out the solution, but no one can directly solve the problem. I also not sure what I did untill can send out. Anyway hope these can help u:
1) My signal is good. I can send sms out (I test with sms to myself) by stock messaging but cannot with Handcent. Both can receive sms.
2) I reg with Handcent, and update, still cannot send.
3) I open WiFi, still cannot send.
2) I disable stock messaging notification and enable Handcent notification, still cannot send.
3) I install GO SMS and chompSMS, also face same problem.
3) I uninstall all sms apps (included GO SMS, chompSMS) and install back Handcent only, still cannot send.
4) I delete all sms (after backup to gmail) since i get this solution from other forum, still cannot send.
5) I restart my phone, still cannot send.
6) I off Wifi and open Data Connection, suddenly can send.
7) I off data connection again, still can send.
8) I on Wifi back with data off & on, still can send.
9) I suspect Data Connection, but curious why i off data connection and wifi again, still can send. Normal sms should be send out with signal good, but why i need to on and off to play around then only can send???
10) I install back GO SMS, chompSMS. Now all can send.

Signed up to share my solution that I've found.

I manage to narrow down the problem to the number itself you're trying to text.

My experience:
I have a contact. His name is Thomas. Under his contact information, there is a google contacts entry with a number, lets say its 555-555-5555. There is also a facebook entry for Thomas, and the number is listed as +1-555-555-5555. When I go into my messaging app, I start a new thread, and begin typing T-O-M (short for thomas). It pulls the number from my contacts because Thomas's name on Facebook is actually Tom, not Thomas. The text message then fails when I try to send it. I deleted the thread, and started a new one, the recipient of the text now being T-H-O-M and so on. It choose the number without the country code (+1) as a prefix, and the text goes through.

TL;DR - Make sure the recipient's number doesn't have +1 in front of it. Facebook contacts that have the +1 in front of their number are causing the text message delivery to fail.

Hope this helps!

I went to txt someone today, and for what ever reason, the message failed to send, and I received the "Message not sent" notification. I tried again, and the message was sent. Now every time I send, or receive a message that notification pops up. "Message not sent - Select to review the message and try again" and when I open the error message, it triggers another to appear. "Undelivered message - Unable to Deliver this message" even though all the txts have been confirmed to go through. This is driving me crazy, any one have any thoughts? It even gives me the message when I open an old txt that I have already read.
If you find a fix please let me know.....I have tried everything I know of and the error is very annoying. Thanks

I just spent an hour on the net researching the "Message not sent" problem. Even though the problem is not new at all (a year or more old), the only solution seems to be to reset the phone to factory default. This is an extremely severe operation and requires hours to restore the phone and apps configuration. I can not understand why people do not object to this vehemently. This is one of two problems (the other being music players automatically going on pause and losing the place in the music) that I am sure developers have know about for a long time. Users should be compensated for this lack of adequate functionality. Phone purchases are made in good faith with the assumption that basic features (and texting sure is a basic feature) work properly. If I were a lawyer I would look into a class action suit regarding these issues. It would seem to me that Google and/or Motorola (I think the problem may be in Android itself) would save money by fixing the problems in lieu of dealing with a lawsuit.

Let's see if this post is deleted by some "well meaning" moderator. That "solution" would be expected after the abuse we users have suffered.

Syncing Facebook to the phone can't be the problem because I never did that. However, I did have the Facebook App installed. I am now in the second week of testing configurations so if I ever figure it out I will post here.

Ended up having two error messages for unsent texts that wouldn't go away. Tried the Handcent SMS app as mentioned above and deleted them from the "undelivered" window. Worked perfect!!

Ok, I just had this problem. I tried inserting my sim card into another phone and it was stil not working. So for me it was clearly not a phone problem but a sim/network problem.(i have a samsung galaxy s with android 2.2) I somehow managed to reset all my sms sending settings, so as soon as I redone this the problem was solved. in message settings go to sending profile and use the folowing(i did this in a different phone and then put back the sim in mine):
sending profile - provider name
message sent as -text
validity- maximum time
and(very important) - message centre number - look this up on the internet for your providers number

Hope this helps! It solved the problem for me.

My phone will do the same thing kinda it only happend when I test a certain friend of mine she will recieve my msg like 4 times an when she replys to me my texting quits working every msgs fails until I pulled the battery I changed my msgsing app an did a master reset still has same problem but only with this one person ive never had this issue with anyone else way strange ugh

My issue is that I downloaded Handcent to use instead of the factory sms (I have an LG Optimus 2.2 Droid phone) it works fine except for one thing. Some sms messages will go through to a person, but every now and then when I send an sns message that is less than 160 characters to that same person it will give me the "Message not sent" error messsage and the message will not be sent and no matter how many times I try to send it, it will not go through. HELP! I don't want to get rid of Handcent but if this continues I will! Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been looking and looking and I haven't seen anything that can help yet.

I have found that with GO SMS my problem was fixed by being certain there was no 1 before the area code...ie 000-000-0000. Anyone who had a one preceding the area code failed

metcalf...thank you, thank you, thank you. These errors were driving me crazy and nothing I did fixed it. I used your solution and had it fixed in minutes. By the way, the messages that were trying to be sent had no contact names and so I could never fix it by deleting a contact. This was an easy way to fix it. THANK YOU!!!

just got the phone not too long ago.. was texting like a champ and suddenly, my people are telling me my messages are coming in multiple times. if i get the red triangle and 'message not sent' alert, my natural response is to resend it...and sometimes, i get the alert again. so right now, all i can do is check the status of the outgoing to see if it's sent and be done with it. but i haven't done anything new or different to the phone for this to start happening (like download apps, etc).. i'm open for suggestions

it is driving me crazy also, and i just got it Friday, and i am having the same problem and i am trying to find out how to send it

Hello Guys!

I am using M110S upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.6
with Nakyup_M110S_GB_VK22_G4.0_Turbo-rel
and Nakyup_M110S_GB_VK22_G4.0_Kernel_origRGB-rel

Since two days i am getting this freaking error messege not sent and i am unable to find the cause and it's fix don't know what the hell is wrong with my phone.

I can send and recive messege in stock sms app but i can't send sms through Handcent or Go SmS pro. I was able to send and receive sms till day before yersterday. i was srewcing some setings in sending option i guess and since then it says messege not sent error.

I have reset my phone the error is still there i have format sd and reset my phone still when i install app i get same error. I flash my phone with Nakyup_M110S_GB_VK22_G4.0_Turbo-rel and install kernal Nakyup_M110S_GB_VK22_G4.0_Kernel_origRGB-rel still when i install any sms app it gives me error when i send sms. I have also tryed SMSC number and enter it manually and tryied go sms pro still no luck.

This problem made furios like hell and i was willing to through the phone on wall don't know what the hell is wrong with my phone.

Anyidea what can be done to my phone which fix the problem. One thing i figured it out that its not a problem of SIM or phone it has to do some thing with third party app sending option. because i can still recieve sms in any app i use but i can't send.

Please if any one have solution for this peace of crap let me know dieing to fix the problem.(Please help or i'll commit suicide lolx)

Thanks in adnvace

My dad's phone was having this problem where he couldn't send but he could receive. I figured out a workaround. Download GoSMS Pro from the market. Open GoSMS then hit menu>settings, the select the "Advanced" Tab on top. Then go into "Send Settings" and scroll down and check "Enable customized SMSC". Now DON'T back out of that menu yet.

I'm new here so I can't post links. Do a google search for "at&t smsc number" and click on the second link that says "Answer Center - AT&T"

Find an SMSC number in your region and plug that(including the + symbol) into the "Customized SMSC number" in GoSMS.

This worked for me, but you may have a different experience. Just thought I would pass this information around since I didn't find this solution in my search for an answer.

Thanks feetus that service center worked for me , i did it on the messaging settings and I changed the sercice number to+13123149810, I have an at&t prepaid cell droid incredible 2

hey all i have got a problem. My phone Lg optimus p970 appears to have trouble with sending texts at times.A red triangle comes up and it says ''message failed' or something like that, well basicly reetting the phone doesnt help and neither does having the app called Handcent or whatever, any help? i cant bare this problem, thanks maya

Hi everyone :)

I have an LG optimus and today after attempting to send any messages i repeatedly got the "message not sent" and "error -1"

This is how I solved it, it's fast, and you don't have to download anything :)

1. go to "Settings" on your phone
2. select heading "Wireless & network settings"
3. select the last heading on the list "Mobile networks"
4. then the last heading on the list "Network operators"
5. you then have 2 options... "Search networks" and "Select automatically"...
6. select "Search networks"... a list will then load of various networks available.. choose one you are NOT with, it doesn't matter which. (ie. i'm with optus so I selected Vodaphone)
7. the phone will then attempt to connect to this network, (which it won't be able to do...so you will get an error alert). This now means you aren't connected to any network.
8. you can now either manually select your network, ("search networks') or just "Select automatically"

...you should now be reconnected to your mobile network, and your messages should send without hassle :) it's worked every time for me

Hope this helps someone... :D

I found this on Motorola Forums and it worked for me without deleting any contacts.
