Help Messaging

Help!!! My first time on..... my HTC Desire says I have 3 messages, when I touch icon to open, it takes me to "all messages" and "compose message",, but it keeps searching but it never opens. I tried hitting menu, but since it's busy, menu won't come up. I have no idea what I did! I am new to HTC. I also tried rebooting.... no go!

Thanks in advance.

do you have a lot of messages on there?

No, I had 3. Not sure if it's the settings, but I went to open the my messages and the little download symbol just keeps going round and round like it's downloading, but I also can't open menu either!
