Root [MetroPCS/CDMA] A firmware update was just released.. 2.99 mb big, wtf???

Just woke up and saw the firmware update sign. I clicked it and it said that it is 2.99mb big and that its meant to fix stability issues. I hope this isn't the official update Metro PCS promised! Like the LG updates. I somehow doubt its JB update.

Well I updated and only change was to kernel. Still on 4.0.4. I also got a failed to update message after all apps were optimized. Wonder if it was in regards to Superuser. I used the "SurviveOTA" option. Guess it survived, still have root.

I'm also getting the error what option is that survived ota?

aslong as you have recovery you can get back root. Oh nuttmeg were u on stock ics rooted and all? got a buddy that just txted me saying his update failed seems every1's update has failed cept you. just wanna know how you managed to get through the update. if ya ask me i think this update smells a lil fishy why would they even bother updating a firmware thats is about to be replaced with jellybean in matters of days??????? hmmmmmmm regardless theres no way they will be able to stop any1 from getting jb period! unlocked bootloader custom recovery installed lol just give us the stock image tar file we will take it from there end of story!

Well remember I erased my stock non root rom :(

that dont matter flash tar we have that will put your phone stock new and i believe it even gives you back stock recovery. so you will have to install that back on your phone and root it again.

Edit:

I believe this update was only to prep us for the jb update like nutmegg suspected.... since me and shabby were on a new radio that we did not release i did not get an update not sure just speculation on my end. anyways if ya so curious about the update for those of ya that downloaded the update you guys can find it /cache/ should be a small 2.99 mb file like op stated if ya manage to find it upload it for us to a take a closer look at it ;)

Samsung talked about this update awhile ago it is supposed to fix the issue with the s3 suddenly just dropping dead that was happening to some people. This fix will be included in the JB update but they had to release it regardless cause there are some people that will stay on ICS stock

If this counts for anything or amazes anyone. I ran the OTA using Clockwork Mod. LOL I thought you couldn't do OTAs through CWM?!! WTFBBQ?! Was there a change? I remember CWM from my G1 and Gtab and that was the norm.

Anywho, I also spoke to Samsung people right now about that message and boy were they helpful /sarcasm

They told me that I wasn't supposed to receive any updates, that.. get this, it must have been a Google Play app update instead. LMAO, like I would confuse that over a "New Software Update is Available" message.

To the guy who asked about the OTA root survival. Its built into Superuser. You can also try OTA Root Survival.

EDIT: Looks like I lost CWM, just rebooted into Clockwork Mod using Rom Manager and it booted me into what looks like stock recovery. Phone stuck on the Andy with spinning Zune logo. Hope this doesn't brick my phone.

Okay so like many of us, I installed the OTA update on my phone and it seems like I lost recovery. i made the mistake of booting into recovery since Rom Manager said that I still had Clockwork Mod. Well it booted me into what looks like stock recovery. Only options available are update from external, wipe and partition, and reboot. WTF?

I don't want to freak out as I bought insurance on my phone, but could anyone help?

Why are you freaking out?? Just reboot and if you still got root, reflash recovery from rom manager.
And re-root if you don't.

To Shaby: That's what I am doing but I flashed CWM using Rom Manager. Phone is still stuck on Andy logo. Can someone point me into flashing recovery through USB?

Guys do you think maybe its a security update for the kernel to patch exploits and stuff, I am not referring to root more like security holes.

dunno mikey and nuttmeg both updated and are fine i tried updating and it say no update available... lol and u could of post this in your previous thread just relax your fine you still have recovery files in recovery folder even if you dont have cwm or twrp you still have the actual recovery files. so im gonna merge this thread with the other one you posted.

Okay, sorry to have alarmed anyone. My phone rebooted several times and it finally started again. (Not my doing). It re-applied the update again though. This time with no errors.

I got the update pushed to my phone this morning as well. Glad I still haven't rooted my phone yet. Waiting for JB update before I start screwin with the phone

did you manage to get recovery back on?

Yes, and thank you so much for moving this thread. ROM Manager had previously said CWM was installed and nothing came up after that. Just reinstalled ROM Manager and the option to flash recovery for R530 came up again.

That was a bit of a scare. For future purposes, our recovery is the same as US Cellular, right???

EDIT: After OTA update, Rom Manager might still say you have CWM flashed, double check because you might not. For anyone who runs into this like I did. Please reflash CWM using ROM Manager after update. If you do not get an option to flash CWM, reinstall ROM Manager and try again.

If you get stuck in the Stock Recovery then reflash CWM using Oudin tool. I will link to guide here in a bit.

Yup, that's what we are all saying. No JB though :(

As someone mentioned in another thread, it looks like this could be the security patch Samsung has been pushing.

after some testing by some of our members and a word from mikey and our agent seems the update was merely an update to fix a bug with gps and ofcourse release a kernel that was suppose to have been released long ago. if ya noticed on metropolis we are on a much newer version ;)

Hey guys I was just wondering what you might be going on with mine as well I used to be rooted but reset my phone and flash stock recovery so I'm back to stock. update goes through the whole procedure but when it reboots it says contact Samsung service center download fail. I noticed when I check device status it still says modified is that because of my flash count from odin that it says that or maybe because I am on Nova Launcher that it won't install correctly?? Help plzz:-)
