To see if dnsmasq for wifi.teher is allowed u hav2 open wifi.tether n turn it on.

For me, it was listed on the top data/data/com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether/bin/dnsmasq

The is my first look at Tethering. How does the process outlined here in this thread compare with a paid app that attempts to create a mobile hotspot for you? I'm guessing that "wifi_tether_v3_3-beta2.apk" is recommended because it's free?
EDIT: I tried watching the video. It's a bit "choppy". Someone mentioned maybe a guide?

I have worked with many paid apps before the only one that wrks with this phone its CWM-Tether (usb) which is the one i use for a non wireless PCs or Macs..
But i like wifi-tether best cus i van connect all my devices n fam @ ones. And in the OP its a guide.

That is an abbreviation for "ClockworkMod" which is the brand name created by Koushik Dutta. Under the name clockworkmod you'll find a variety of apps, tools, utilities, and mods. The most important of all is cwm recovery.
Props to Koushik for single handedly making the world of android so awesome with his recovery.

@@@@TheEmpathicEar ... U can download the registry so u can change ur UserAgent string in IE cus some ppl don't like chrome and some websites requires IE to fully function with that registry u do not need a UserAgent switcher

I do like Chrome. But, I don't understand the need for these instructions as related to the rest of the instructions in the OP? I'll re-read everything and watch the video again to see if that sheds some light...

Reason for this is because like i said... OTHER PPL use IE and some gov websites, wallmrt, targt, job sites, etc etc etc. Needs IE to FULLY FUNCTION.
Issues came along users and the way they were able to succeed it was that way.:smokingsomb:

Could someone explain what this step doe? i.e. Do you have to do this every time you start the tether app?
The basic of tethering without the tether plan on your account:
Use a different app to initialize the access point than what is included in the Stock OS.
A plethora (a great amount) of options need to be toggled, through different means than Stock OS methods.
Some, most, all, none specific setups need tweaking to specific settings. (I used most of this guide on my Huawei Valiant with great success)
Important: You need to be mindful on what you are doing. Yes, most options that are toggled to activate the access point need to be applied upon every use of the access point. Yes, these are 'extra steps' compared to paying $5/month. Is that $5 worth it? After 2 months, I decided 'No'. You may choose otherwise.
By the way, I had rigged a script to apply my needed toggles. If you are any kind of coder (I am NOT), you could do the same.
Choice of web browser on PC side matters depending on how you hide the PC data, AND the websites you visit.
I can use the Hotspot app in this thread WITHOUT TOGGLES (just turn it on) to give internet to my tablets. No warning banner or redirects. My tab is Nexus 7, wifey has iPad. BUT, to get my Vista laptop onit requires the toggling of crap.
Methinks I've contributed all I can to this thread.... lol

Windows 7 is much like Vista. I guess I'll be toggling. I'll be using Chrome. I'm assuming not much configuration will be needed given I won't be using a VPN - whatever - to hide data?
A VPN to hide the data negates the need for much of the configuration on the PC side. But I cannot emphasize enough "EACH SETUP IS APPARENTLY UNIQUE"
Even the same device may need slight tweaking that the same (but separate) device did not.
I've said a few pages back that I use Tor on my phone and 'transparent proxy all apps' option to get around much of that issue.
If the carrier sees the data as 'mobile based' (meaning the phone requested it), it will work. Changing the user agent string in pc side browser is an attempt at this.

1. If this true, the OP should be changed to reflect this? I spent some time trying to locate "hotspot" - not knowing it was "hostapd"?
2. I went through the instructions on the Android side very carefully.
3. [PC] I'm trying to use Chrome. I added an extension - "User-Agent Switcher
for Chrome". Can anyone suggest how to configure this? I can connect, but can't get any web pages to load. "No Internet Access" or "Limited Access"
4. I'm willing to try Internet Explorer, but would like to use Chrome if possible.
EDIT: I have a VPN. If it would be easier to use a VPN, rather than configure browser settings, I would try that instead.

I run OpenVPN on my phone before I start tether app, no change is needed for any PC I tether to my phone. By using user agent on your PC browser, some pages may not rander the way you expect.

I use https://www.vpntunnel.com/, which also uses OpenVPN. Can you confirm this eliminates PC configuration? And, does it matter if you start the VPN on the PC side before starting the tether on the Android side?

I run Easyovpn (from playstore) or I connect OpenVPN to my own VPN server at home on my phone. In either case, I don't start VPN on the PC side, there is nothing I need to do on my PC except to pick the phone's wifi hot spot to connect to. The steps I do are:
1) start easyovpn and pick a server
2) start wifi tether
3) from PC, select phone's wifi hotspot
4) kill hostspd with Android Tuner
Once in a while, I can't connect to phone's hotspot until hostspd is killed and need to reconnect after I kill hostspd.

My VPN, https://www.vpntunnel.com/, only mentions a PPTP setup for Android and PPTP costs more with my VPN It maybe possible to configure "Easyovpn" as you have. I'm not sure if it's possible or necessary if the PPTP config accomplishes the same effect? My VPN does not mention a config using OpenVPN. I'm waiting to hear from them about this.
EDIT: After going through all this, I would rather use a paid app that could affect the same
EDIT: I assume that "Tethering & Networks" > "Mobile Hotspot" options require $$ to use from MetroPCS?

"IEUA9.reg", is this for Internet Explorer only? Or, is there something for Chrome?
