Micro sd slot

ok I played around with one of these at office depot for an hour and like the pen feature so thinking of selling my ipad mini. I see it has a micro SD card slot, can you save music/movies to it and save the internal memory for apps etc?

Music, you can save to the externalSD and most music players should be able to recognize that music, without any issues. There are some exceptions, but for the most part that isn't an issue.

Videos/Movies are a slightly different story. It really depends on where you got the videos, if they are DRM protected, and some other factors.

For instance, Google Play Movie downloads automatically into this folder:
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/<random characters>files will be seen with different random character id names and will also be .wvm files
- These files can be moved to the SD card, but they cannot be played from the SD card (to my knowledge). I attempted moving one of my files, to see if it would identify as a "personal video" on the Google Play Movies app, but it didn't identify at all.

For Flixster (which is the common download system for many digital copies that accompany blu-ray's/dvd's), the files definitely can't be found from the SD card. I have a ton of movies that I've downloaded, then moved over the files to the SD Card, with a folder specifically for that title...and then move them back into the required folder in order to play them. It has worked for me before, but I'm not sure if it still continues to function the same.

So, I wish I could say it's an easy yes/no answer, but it really depends on where you purchase the video/music and what player you're trying to use to play the video/music file.

This is also a big reason why Google doesn't have microSD cards on their Nexus devices. #1) They're attempting to get people to rely more on the cloud (good luck on that one) and #2) They want people to be more reliant on the internal storage for downloads, if necessary.

These are two (2) trains of thought that I really don't agree with, when it comes to Google and how they have set up Android in more recent times.

How about playing movies that you have stored in the cloud. Do they have to be downloaded first? I'm wondering about the pros and cons of heavily using the cloud for storage.

Movies stored in the cloud? As long as you're connected to the internet, it should work fine.

I personally don't like relying on the cloud, like Google wants people to do. Until we're in a day and age with tech, where we never have to worry about losing connectivy, I won't rely on the cloud at all.

It's worth noting also that as the Note 8 only accepts cards formatted to Fat 32 that the max file size accepted on the card will be 4GB, so if you add a file larger than this the file system will not see it.

thanks for that info, im still researching the note and playing around with it before i ditch the ipad mini. The largest movie file that I currently have is 2gb. Most of the youtube vids that I download and watch offline is 300mb or so...What is the fastest card the note will accept? class 4? Also can these files be saved without rooting?

I have a 64gb, class 10 in my Note 8.0 and Note 2 right now. Works perfectly fine.

I find this hard to believe as the Note 2 and Note 10.1 both recognize the newer exFAT format. Which means you no longer have that restriction that is associated with FAT32.

Did you format it to FAT32 or did you leave it as exFAT? exFAT is the default format for the newer SDXC cards.
