Help microphone is turned off HTC EVO 4G

This morning, my microphone does not work, so I cannot speak on the phone and the person at the other end cannot hear me.
When I make a call, there is a slash through the microphone signal, and I cannot figure out how to remove the slash. Tapping on it does not work.
Any suggestions?
HTC EVO 4G

Note: I do have a bluetooth headset and it does work, but I really need the phone's mic to function. Seems like there should be a setting somewhere that I can toggle, but I cannot find it.
Thanks in advance.

Tapping the mic icon should turn off the slash - it's the "mute" button. It's time for the phone to visit the carrier's repair center.

are you rooted?

if not, then you can try a hard reset or even just powering it off, pull the battery out, and reboot.

if those do not work then it does sound like a hardware issue.

Yes, I am rooted. Currently running supersonic ICS. I tried going back to evo4G_stock_rooted_....zip, to no avail. I suspect it is a hardware issue. Sigh.

yeah if you flashed a different rom and it is still doing the same thing then i would assume that it is hardware.:(

Yup. I just purchased this phone last month or so on eBay. I sent the vendor a message, but I suspect I am SOL.
Ah well, on the plus side, I learned a lot with this phone. The whole Android operation, rooting, etc.
All in all, it has been a good experience with a faulty motherboard (phone).
That Samsung Galaxy S4 / S5 looks mighty tempting.
