Help Microsd card compatibility/formatting discussion

Pre-warning on the 64gb card...I put that card in my Photon and formatted the card through my phone. Up side was that it works perfectly while in my phone. Down side is that, when I took the card out of my phone and tried to use a microSD>SD adaptor to make some changes, it wouldn't read the card on my computer at all (when I placed that into the card slot).

Interesting, mine formatted in my G Note works fine in a card reader...

BTW, 64GB cards confirmed working in the 4G LTE by users now - Fat32 required.

Yeah, very strange. Not sure what the issue is/was. It'll be a moot point for me anyway, cuz I'm going to end up re-formatting for whichever new superphone I decide to get, but just a PITA connecting the phone in order to transfer the data for my ringtones, pictures, music, and video.

Sounds like your card reader (or computer - drivers) is not SDXC compatible. All card readers, adapters, and conversions are not equal. Imagine all the differences in configurations there could be...
Your reader or adapter is probably only for use up to SD or SDHC

2. Non-compatible Device

If you accidentally insert your SDXC memory card into an SDHC device that is not compliant, the following messages may appear:
Card error
This card cannot be used
Please check your card
Format this card

Choose No/cancel

You can access the SDXC card by using an SDXC compatible USB reader or adapter
...
If you want to use an SDXC card in the SD slot on your computer, you need an SDXC compatible driver for the SD slot.

If I had an extra card reader I would have sent you one already since they are so cheap. :rolleyes: Usually one comes bundled with the card. You can find one for a buck or two around the net.

You are the man, Pyro! Thanks for that 411.

I'm guessing it's the drivers. The card reader works fine cuz I tested it with my extra 32gb micro sd.

So your reader/adapter is probably SD and SDHC only. Your drivers should be fine if you are on Windows 7.

32GB = SDHC (generally)
64GB = SDXC

That explains it. Unfortunately, still on vista. Just bought windows 7 upgrade, so have to make sure I back up programs I want to reinstall, before I get there.

I guess it could be a Vista problem, or drivers.
My SDXC card works in my SDHC reader. My Win 7 computer hiccups at it, but it ends up working everytime.

This is the style reader I have (plugs right into USB slot - no adapters or conversions)

I have a brand new 64Gb memory card and would like to know if I should partition it before using it in my new LTEvo or just format it in the phone and use as is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

FWIW, you DONT have to format at all. its just good procedure to let the phone format it so the phone can use the space as efficiently as possible.

its akin to doing a factory reset on a "just out of the box" handset.

If you haven't gotten one yet, andorama has the 64gb micro sdxc for 64.99

After inserting your sd card, make sure to go to storage, app storage location settings, update all, and pick storage card.

This will put the max amount of file in the SD, saving space in the internal memory for apps and whatnot. :)

Can you confirm that the app storage actually did move over to the external SD or if it moved to the internal storage? I'm not sure if anybody had confirmed how LTEvo is partitioned, but on the MoPho (which has same amount), I've never been able to move apps to the external SD.

I just got my El Tevo and can't find the option to format the SD card. This is my first ICS phone so I'm a little lost.

Swipe down from the top of the screen and pull down the notification bar. Then press Settings in the upper right hand corner and scroll down and tap Storage. Then scroll down to Storage Card and choose Erase Storage card. If that is grayed out choose Unmount storage card first and then Erase.

There we go! Thanks!

this moves to the internal 9.93 storage partition and NOT /ex_card

would seem that way drex. thats how i took it.

ICS is handling memory management completely differently than honeycomb, GB and froyo...
