Root Might need to return a Z4 Rooted phone

I have seen a few threads similar, read through them, but want to make sure of the suggestion in my situation.

I rooted with Z4root, and my version has the unroot option.

I did nothing fancy;
1. I downloaded titanium basic, made back-ups, but never removed or even froze anything.
2. I downloaded Terminal Emulator, did nothing with it
3. I downloaded Wireless Tether and have wirelessly tethered (fun)
4. I put Superuser Icon on one of my homescreens cause it looks cool (I know I can just remove it easily)

Now I tried listening to music and no audio comes out of my headphones, even when plugged in the audio comes out of the phone speakers instead. I have read that this may be solved with a factory reset, or it may just be a hardware problem.

Before I reset, or take my phone into verizon I want to have my X unrooted as a precaution in case somoene looks or I end up swapping on the spot at verizon store.

If I uninstall Titanium, Wireless Tether, Terminal Emulator (Not sure it even uses superuser permission does it?), then use Z4unroot, and unstill z4, and remove the APK, will I have any issue with root showing?

I never flashed roms or removed anything, but I've heard there are possible traces of root.

1. Stray Superuser icon left over
2. Something named -soff -son or something like that?

What's my best option?

Thanks guys

Whenever I load a new ROM I always run Maderstcok340 using the Droid X Bootstrapper. This will remove root, reinstall all bloatware, etc. This will make your DX look completely stock and unaltered.

If you are worried about a VZW Rep seeing evidence that you have Rooted your X, just leave your MicroSD card containing all the files at home. :)

You can find more information about Maderstcok here:
maderstcok - OTA 2.3.340 update.zip

Hope this helps.

@ Lemur:
Thanks for the info. The tip about leaving SD card at home is nice, I can leave my APK on that even, but still think all the programs are installed to the phones storage.

Is that maderstock necesarry if I never tried any rom'ing? He mentions possibilty of brick if something goes wrong and I don't want to risk bricking my phone any more than necesarry just for the headphone issue.

@Mazz:
No I did not run an .sbf.

Literally just rooted with Z4, installed titanium basic, and wireless tether, tethered a few times, thats it.

I purposely avoided anything complicated, no roms, no overclock, no uninstalling, no flashing. All I wanted out of the deal was free tethering.

thanks all

I actually had the exact problem, took compressed air and blew out the headphone jack and it started working. I was very stoked.

You should be fine flashing the maderstcok zip file as long as you wipe data and cache before flashing the maderstcok file. Make sure you use a broadband internet account to download the maderstcok file and then transfer the file to your sd card, it should be over 300mb in size.

Thanks XlideRider,

I trust that the .zip file linked to works, its just a matter that I have never used that piece of software which I am suposed to use to make the back-up from, and never thought of going into that menu where I can only navigate using the volume up/down buttons etc.

I stayed clear of ROM flashing for precisely that reason, I was comfortable using 1-click root, and installing wireless tether, but didn't really want to manually mess with those lower-level developer interfaces of my phone.

Maybe that means I'm stuck with a phone that has a faulty headphone connection, or maybe I'll just have to settle with have remnants of my root discoverable, but how many of the traces can I get rid of without flashing a zip/rom or going to the "scarier" system menus.

I can uninstall wireless tether, and uninstall titanium backup, I can use Z4root to "unroot".

So my questions are:

1. Does the super user icon just disappear? Can I uninstall the superuser icon? (Before? After? "unrooting" in Z4root) Do results vary on this point?

2. What remnants are still present on my phone, what can verizon see that shows I rooted at some point? How noticable are they?

Thanks a million

The Superuser icon may disappear after unrooting. If it doesn't, you should be able to uninstall it when unrooting is done. You won't be able to uninstall it while rooted.

Edit: once you're unrooted, have Superuser and any other programs that use root uninstalled, there's nothing left that would make anyone at Verizon think that your phone was rooted. I'm assuming that you haven't installed Bootstrap Recovery. It takes a little more work to get rid of that.

Thank you RiverMan.

You are correct in assuming I didn't install bootstrap, and I'm glad now that I didn't. I chose to steer clear of anything more intense than titanium back-up and free tethering. Never really used titanium other than to save backup of software, but then didn't change anything lol.

I uninstalled my root required aps, then unrooted, and uninstalled Z4 root. POOF the superuser icon disappeared on its own.

Then I went to verizon and they are shipping me a new phone.

Unless i hear otherwise now I will ship mine back as is, and check in once everything is cleared up to let other know if they catch on.

Thanks again to everyone for the advice.
