Root MILESTONE 2.1 update and root guide

I will help you... it's just you need to read to learn. Like I said lolbug is/was in the same situation. I'll quote my answer: "By flashing a non-service SBF I believe you lose your text messages, homescreen setup, call history, pirated apps(that's all I could think of). If you flash a service SBF, then you shouldn't lose this stuff..."

And again... I quote: "You could root your phone either way. If you plan to follow the method in this forum and you're already at 2.1-update1 then you can skip all the beginning steps and start at flashing the vulnerable recovery." So are you already at 2.1-update1?

hey guys thought id return with my updates.

I took the plunge and rooted my CANADIAN TELUS MILESTONE successfully (Thanks twindragons)

@marcmilestone if you have fw2.1 already on your phone from telus then just download the vulnerablility sbf FOR BOOTLOADER 90.78 OR LOWER ONLY
and flash with rsdlite add the gots loader to your sd card and go from there it was very simple nothing at all was screwed on my phone after if you don't have the 2.1 update then get it from telus or go into phone settings about phone system updates and update directly.

also this I think is confusing you as it did myself on the first page of this forum it says to get a "sbf of your choice from here" the only reason they have that is because this thread was made when 2.1 came out so the author wanted to make sure that you had the 2.1 update installed on your phone before rooting so if you dont have 2.1 than get the "service sbf" from that page or just go into your phone settings and update there straight from telus then start at step 9.

switch your usb settings

with ur phone connected via usb pull down your status bar at the top of your screen on the phone click and change the usb settings to the top one tools and something

Hey guys,

So I plan on doing this right when I receive my phone, can anyone with more experience than me look over the steps I put together from previous posts and see if there's any fault in my logic?

Buying Motorola Milestone OEM NAM unlocked NOT Telus apparently.

1. Install 2.1 update 1 with OTA update
a. go to settings and update
-Since it is 2.1 update 1 then I can skip to step 9 on the original
tutorial in the first page.

2. flash the vulnerable recovery SBF using RSD Lite

3. Use G.O.T. open recovery
a. Move the update.zip and OpenRecovery file to the phone's root
directory
-Note: you may have to delete a previously installed version of
OpenRecovery first by deleting the folder on your SD card.
b. Run update.zip, G.O.T. recovery menu will appear.

4. Nandroid backup the phone

5. Root the phone using the G.O.T. recovery menu

6. Copy Nandroid backup files from the phone to PC.

7. Flash vulnerable recovery SBF again. (Don't know why I have to do
this, read in previous post on page 5, post #244, by joolui that i have to
"Reflash again steps: 1.-3." Can someone please explain this to me?)

8. Split SD card so I can use APPS2SD

9. Install APPS2SD

So there you go! Any faults in my logic???
Thanks!

looks good you shouldn't need to re flashing the sbf not sure about that seems unnecessary to me I think joolui was having his own set of difficulties

ok good!

Another question, when I split the SD card so i can use APPS2SD it will wipe all the contents of the SD card.

Do I have to reinstall G.O.T. open recovery and update.zip on the sd card and rerun update.zip?

Thanks

Whenever you want to use the G.O.T. menu you will need to run the update.zip. You will need to put the open recovery and the update.zip back onto your SD card if you have wiped your SD card.

By partitioning your SD card you will be formating it. It would be best to make a back up of both your phone and your SD card before trying to use Apps2SD.

Hmm, I'm kind of confused which sbf I should use. I live in holland, but that isn't listed...
Also, I saw another guide where this step was skipped completely, only the vulnerable recovery file was flashed... So is it really a necessary step?

What's your Milestone's "Firmware Configuration Version"? You can can find it in Settings > About phone.

If your Milestone already has Android 2.1 then you can skip to step 8. The first part of the tutorial shows you how to update your phone to Android 2.1 which is unnecessary if you already have 2.1 installed.

ah thx for the info. I was on 2.1 already (came out of the box like that) My config version is GAS_EMEA_USASHLS00RTGB_P023, but I guess that doesn't really matter anymore, does it? K, I'll root it this evening (not now, diner's ready~) If I have any other questions/problems I'll post here :)

From your "Firmware Configuration Version" it seems you have the UK version.

Motorola is yet to officially release a bug fix update for the UK Milestone. There is a leaked version of it by G.O.T which you can find on this page. You can flash that if you want and it already includes the vulnerable recovery. But I am not sure if the final official version that will be released by Motorola will be same as the leaked one by G.O.T.

If you do not want to flash the leaked version and plan on installing the official version later when its released, you will again have to flash the vulnerable recovery and apply the root update.zip.

hmm, that's weird... In the box wasn't a uk-wallcharger, only a usb cable and a europe-wallcharger... What part of that string implies it's a UK version?

I guess installing that bugfix first would be a good idea... I'm first gonna make a full backup tough, it's never a good idea to do stuff when you're not exactly sure what you're doing without a backup, I'll get to work on that first. Thx for the info

Compare that string with the 2.1 UK sbf files found on this page. You will find "USASHLS00RTGB_P023" in the file names. The "GB" most likely stands for Great Britain. Anyway, its not hard for Motorola to bundle EU wall chargers with UK Milestones. :D

Also, you will need to flash vulnerable recovery to be able to take full backups too. So if you don't feel comfortable flashing G.O.T's leaked version, then just go ahead and flash only the vulnerable recovery. Flashing vulnerable recovery takes just a few seconds (after everything is set up of course) so you can easily flash it again after installing the official update whenever its released.

aah that makes sense. I'll just flash the vcore first, backup, and then reflash it with the update. I'll try it, if anything else goes wrong I'll post ;)

Ok, brb, making a backup, I think I know everything I need to know now, it shouldn't take too long.

Yup, done, no further problems.

I have the Telus Milestone, and I just updated to the service SHOLS_U2_03.11.0 update, from the previous SHOLS_U2_03.10.0 that I had rooted. I followed the same instructions at the beginning of this thread, and everything went fine. All my apps were still intact, and all of my settings were retained, except for the notification tone. I am now rooted again with no problems so far.

I bought my Milestone from ebay and had to ship to Australia and have it flown to Bangladesh (where I live) for legal reasons. It came with a firmware that had Chinese in it. The model number was XT702 and the reception it had was plainly shocking. It would go out of service on my office desk which is pretty much at the centre of Dhaka. Even the cheapest of all mobiles had 5 bars there. It ate up all the charge in hours.

I was properly disappointed with the thing.

Anyway after a couple of days I found this forum and thanks to this awesome guide I was able to root and changed the firmware of my phone with what I believe is a UK firmware. The firmware was a service one that solved the reception issue and the consuming battery charge issues.

After the root and consequent firmware change my phone currently has these details:
Firmware Version
2.1-update1
Firmware configuration version
GAS_EMEA_USASHLSOORTGB_PO23
Baseband Version
3GSMEPU91A_U_91.07.4EI
Baseband configuration version
UCASHLSMR2EMEAB1B805C.OR
Kernel version
2.6.29-omP1
A21146@CA25RHE74 #1
Build number
SHOLS_U2_02.31.0
My bootloader is 90.78

However, whenever I try to update, it says:
"The device is unable to connect to the server.

Try again later."

I know there isn't any update available (I could be wrong) but shouldn't it be able to connect to the update server at least? Or is it not going to since I have rooted my phone?

I read somewhere that once you update a rooted milestone you lose the root, which I am fine with by the way.

I just want to have my phone ready for Froyo whenever Motorola decides to finally release it. And then may be move on to something fancy :D.

Any suggestions?

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to point out that there is a newer version of the Motorola Drivers. Currently I have 4.4.0 installed on my system, but the link is 4.2.0

Additionally, the version in Moto's website is even newer: Link 4.6.5

Is it any problem if I have installed 4.4.0 instead of the linked one in the first post??

Thanks in advance.
