Root MILESTONE 2.1 update and root guide

I believe the apps you are looking for are here.

Though for TTS, that should be built into the phone under Language > Text-to-speech.

Thanks for the site. I tried those apps before rooting. 3d gallery has bugs. I couldn't open camera. Viewing photos is ok. launcher is unstable. It force closes all the time.

Never mind. Can you tell me if I can restore back to the original firmware just by factory resetting in the phone?

Edit: Good news. Its now running like a charm. The launcher is awsome!!!! Thank you all. I love my Milestone now. 3Dgallery and Launcher are down! Speech to text to go and nothing more!!!!

well stil having a problem here. When i flash the Vulnerable Recovery SBF it reboots the phone and the gives me the following message in RDS Lite

I says you have to manually restart your phone. Let's try! I've just rooted my phone and it worked pretty easily. You're closed to the finish line!

As long as the phone has booted, you are ok to close RSD Lite/disconnect USB.

Ok disconnected and gone to do the update file of the sdcard but i still get the following error

E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

format your sd card and copy the update.zip inside again. Repeat the steps and u're way to go. GL

That isn't the cure to the issue he's having. The signature verification error means the vulernable recovery flash hasn't been carried out.

His recovery is still preventing the running of unsigned update.zip files.

Well formatted a brand new 16gb card and used the batch file mentioned and still have the same error message

Have you loaded your phone up into bootloader mode? You can't flash via RSD Lite in recovery mode.

After the second flash (the 1st root ran quite well until I installed voicesearchwithkeyboard. It sucked and corrupted the whole system.), my Milestone sometimes (not often though) automatically reboots (usually when I install apks). Does anybody experience the instability after rooting???

Yep followed the instructions step for step...

Did you try the batch file tool I suggested?

Root wouldn't really create instabilities, those are most likely due to something you have installed or removed.

from what i gather, since we can't overclock (due to not being able to flash custom roms)....

does that mean we can't use apps2sd? we can't install apps to our sd card by rooting it because the kernel is still locked? or is there a way around it where we can still installs apps to the sd card?

I believe we can use apps2sd. I can move the cache to SD, so I don't see why the apps can't be moved.

i just flashed the first time, with the 2.1 sbf....

and rsd rebooted my phone and for status it says "please manually power up this phone" and the result is in process...
the progress is at 100% though...

so should i just reboot the phone normally?

edit: just saw that tazd was getting the same error...i got it on the first flash though, not the second

edit again: i got passed those screens..you have to reboot the phone normally, while connected, then turn it off...then boot up again in bootloader mode (up and power), all while connected, and it'll finish by itself

My milestone's firmware must be south-east asia. And I rooted!!!! How simple it was! Thank you, craigcrawford1988. But I'm wondering if I can have speech to text function, home launcher like nexus one and the 3d gallery. What site suggest you?

One more thing, can I restore the unrooted version when needed? Do I just need to factory reset or reflash?

Nice work on the root. I have a very similar model that I think originated in HK or there abouts. (I'm in New Zealand and the phone was never imported here)

My firmware configuration version is GAS_EMEA_UCASHLS00TRES_P013

Also running 2.1-update1

Did you jump straight onto flashing the vulnerable recovery and applying root or did you reflash the whole device first?

Yippee i worked out what i was doing wrong. Where i was getting the message in RDLite saying Please manually reboot the phone i was rebooting it to it's normal start up not going back into bootloader mode. Once i booted into bootloader mode i got the Finished and pass results in RDLite and was then able to run the update.zip to get full root. It may be worth adding this little bit of info to the tutorial just in-case anyone else is a daft as me :)
And a big thanks to everyone here who took the time to help with my silly mistake and to all the folks here at androidforums.

Added to the Known Issues - thanks!

Yeah, I did like craig said. Just flash the vulnerable recovery and done! If it says in the RSD that you have to manually power up the phone, just press and hold the power button to shut down and restart, you will probably finish the flash then. Restart again and enjoy the fruit!

tazd - no problem for the help on the manually booting issue

craigcrawford - do you know how or where we can install apps2sd? sorry to ask a random question about this here but i had mentioned it in an earlier post and i have absolutely no clue how to get it running

or if anyone else can point me in the right direction, it'd be greatly appreciated...i'll start my own thread to see if anyone pops up there...

in reference to the whole rom/apps2sd issue...i just wanted to post a problem that some milestone users are getting:

91ijjb.jpg

no matter which way i've formatted it, i keep getting that reply...i've connected through the usb with and without memory card access before going to adb (obviously, with access doesn't work because you can't cd to it)
i've formatted with the apps2sd apk...i've formatted through various partition programs
they show up as fat32 (primary, activE) and ext2 (primary) on my partition programs, i can access them fine on the computer
but as far as installing it, it doesn't work

is it becausae of the kernel? (i have a canadian milestone, it's locked...) i know we can't install roms with our root...but apps2sd also?

i'm just posting this here because we have had reference to the installation of roms here and i'm wondering if it's all tied together...any help is appreciated!
