Root Miui and Gparted? noob :/

dan55

Android Expert
hi guys,

ive recently put Miui au on my desire after Unrevoke rooting it- seems generally ok - but have been told that the XJ version is better, and fully in english :) - so just downloaded that

But noticed in the Miui instructs that i didnt do the Gparted ext3 bit :/
does that mean that the a2sd bit of the rom wont work?

It seems a bit of a messy process compared to the other bits

thanks
dan

You have no partition? If not, you wont have a2sd+ no. The script miui xj uses (dark tremor) will still allow the rom to boot without one though.

If you believe you have a partition, how did you create it?

Gparted is THE BEST method for partitioning your SD card (Bar NONE) so I cannot and will not recommend any other way.

hi SUroot.
thanks for quick reply.

right I see. was thinking if I didn't have ext that tomorrow wouldn't work.
so that clears that up.

no I didn't create a partition myself. just used Unrevoke to root.

shall probably wait for time to do the ext bit before flashing Xj then.

cheers
dan

You can use XJ without a partition. Then when you finally make one, it weill start to use it automatically.

Xj installed :-) thanks.

its more greedy on internal mem by looks of it...
so good reason to Gpart it

On the same vein, apologies for hijacking thread a tad :) ....

....... been running MIUI for about two weeks now and

A2SD has 275mb free out of 504mb
Internal has 38mb free out of 148mb

..... going to run low on internal soon. Does this seem right?

After initial MIUI from GV issue I ran the 'cachesd' one to no avail, I then ran 'a2sd repair' and thought it sorted it but noticed today the low memory so I tried 'a2sd reinstall' but no difference.

Now, looking through 'manage apps', it seems many apps are still on phone - I moved a couple of big ones to SD and internal has increased.

A bit rusty on this craic as I ran with GV for a few months, but I thought the apps were put on SD automatically or has the initial issue with the 'a2sd' messed with this process?

I'm assuming I need to move the apps manually now? Any shortcuts?

Any logic behind this issue is appreciated SU, many thanks, good to see You still about helping folk :)

I think you're getting a bit mixed up here. a2sd+ (i.e ext partition) will always show as on internal as the a2sd script fools android into thinking the ext partition is internal. moving to SD will move apps to fat. To just use a2sd+, all apps must be internel.

Try downloading a2sdGUI from teh market and see what is where (Dalvik etc). It is a gui to dark tremor a2sd+

Aye, that rings a bell :) - that's the bit I was missing. Forgot that but had a feeling that I shouldn't be moving them to the SD card, that's why I only moved 2 before posting here to be sure, phew :) Moved the 2 in question back.

Downloaded. When opened at first it stated an error, that the problem may be:

1) not rooted (I am)
2) a2sd script not present (errmmmm 99.9% sure there is)
3) no sd-ext (done ages ago thro gparted and hasn't been undone by me so I understand this should still be there)

Restarted app and got the following info:

A2SD Settings:
Apps are on SD
Zipalign on boot is on
Swap settings deactivated

Dalvik:
Dalvik Cache on SD-EXT
Dalvik JIT is ON
Heapsize 64

System Info:
Internal Memory 35mb free from 147mb
SD-EXT 299mb free from 503mb ... Quick System Info says 274 from 504?
/cache/ 36mb from 40mb

Any lightbulbs?

decided I couldn't face Gparted tonight :-\ I've got 68mb left on internal and most of
my apps loaded now.
thought I could just run it and slap a 512 part on my as but sounds a bit more
involved. fat32 etc :-\

Creating the EXT partition is a doddle using gparted as far as I remember chap, follow the guide (I used SU's when I did it) and You can't go far wrong, if wrong at all :)

But don't do anything if You aren't in the form to do so, if You encounter an issue nightmares begin lol

I Think, Liam, you're looking as if all is working as should be and theres not a lot that can be done now to enhance space without messing with internal partitions...

If you're on GB, they you can move large stuff like angry birds to sd and save a bit of space that way. Its not ideal but may help if youre struggling.

hi Liam

:-D yes was feeling a bit run down after all my rooting
and romming :-)
shall track down SU's guide when I go for it

btw.have noticed that apps2sd app doesn't move as
many apps on Xj :-\

cheers

SU - No worries, as long as all is as it should be :) Not needing the space, have apps taking up space that I don't use - time for a clearout maybe, I just thought something was maybe wrong.

Cheers amigo :)

Other Dan - only noticing now, never went this low on GingerVillian I think and not many more apps since I changed to MIUI.

Other than this, MIUI is a great for a change :)

@ Liamalone
even if you have app on sdext and dalvik cache your phone can run out of internal memory (mine was around 50 with a lot of applications and games)
this was the reason i switched to Oxygen and i currently have more than 100mb free

so your only salvation would be to make a 1gb ext partition and use the data to ext version of MIUI

hope this helps

hi guys.
just remembered that before root/romming my phone struggled
to keep above 20mb free for internal! so 60 free is very good imo :-)

cheers
