From my experience CM7 and MIUI have fairly similar battery usage with similar settings. My MIUI usage has not been for more than a couple days at a time, I always go back to CM7.
Do you leave 3G on all the time? What is your Time Without Signal?
Yep, huge battery killer there. It searches for a signal that whole time and eats your battery fast. I recommend carrying a charger (or extra battery) around if you normally have that much TWS.time without signal is....HOLY CRAP....61% thats why......
In the question of which rom offers better battery life they are (as stated) pretty much the same but if you were running standard android firmware then you would be losing alot more battery. Idk the reason for this though, could someone pls elaborate

Do you have wireless at your home??
because if you do i suggest using that while around the house and switching to 3g when you are not at home... its what i have been doing for a while now. Yes Wifi uses less power than 3G data. Stock ROM may just have more background stuff running & sucking up data with no way to turn them off. At least with CM7, I remove a lot of crapware I don't need and it gives me finer control on what to enable & disable.
I know one of the reasons that there is battery life with cm7 and miui is because of the upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3. Google added better battery life and smoother performance which probably means when we finally get cm9 on the Triumph the battery life is going to be even more improved. If someone wants to add to this please do. This is all I know about the differences of stock (2.2) to cm7/ miui (2.3).![]()
thank you for this new information... so basically with every update of the firmware we should find an improvement in battery life. Could the improvement be due to the changing of some programs or just making them run more efficently??
Usually yes, but I wouldn't put high hopes on future firmware updates from VM or Motorola. The OS & low level firmware can only do so much. The background data & sync settings only work assuming app developers follow guidelines. They can still write poor apps that use data in the background. Check out this guide I wrote for other ways to improve battery life:

3G is a battery killer for sure.
I use to "just deal" with bad battery life, but I discovered Juice Defender.
I normally dont like apps like that, along the lines of ATK and other battery saving stuff, I think there garbage and use more resources than they save, but JD actually is neat. It turns background 3G data off when the screen is off, and back on when you unlock the phone. you still get calls and texts. any push notifications like gmail arrive when you unlock the screen, which is great becuase if you unlock the phone its better to have something to do, rather than mindlessly play around with it and kill the battery (like I do. its a bad habit, pull out phone and flip around homescreens with nothing to do....)
it really extended my battery at least twofold.
Im still buying a spare battery and bring my charger with my everywhere, but I can rest easy when I listen to music and have the screen off, and not turn on the screen an hour later to find my phone at 4% from a full charge.
CM7 does not disable wifi/3g when turning off the screen. It used to do that to wifi as a temporary fix to stop it from not waking up when the wifi was on.I'm not quite sure but i believe cm7 does this automatically... when i used have the stock rom running i couldnt just lock it and leave it in my bag all day but now before a class or when im not using it i just lock it and finf that after a 70 minute lecture it has lost maybe 1% of its total battery which is exceptional compared to the usual battery life
So if you want more battery efficient apps, you should use the ones that are made for the latest firmware??? and is there anyway of telling how much background data they use because im pretty sure they don't specify this in the permissions before download in market??

Apps have no idea what phone firmware they're running, nor should they care, they just assume everything works. Firmware updates are to fix things that aren't working as designed on the phone.
Apps are only aware of which Android version is running (2.2.2 for stock, 2.3.7 for CM7/MIUI). And most apps are updated to run on the latest (4.0.1) with backward compatibility.
i hate apps that arent backwards compatible
