Mobile Data turns itself on

Syphadeus

Newbie
I'm using LauncherPro (free version) and keep finding that my mobile data connection keeps turning itself on.

I have downloaded CurveFish APN Switch, QuickSettings and Dataswitch - all with the intent of being able to turn off mobile data when I'm not using it, as I find this increases my battery life considerably.

Thing is, they all work, they all turn the data off. Only I'll come back to my phone after a while only to find the data arrow indicator on in the notification bar, and hey, data is back on. It's really annoying me. I used the stock Sense switch with Sense all the time and it always worked. If off it stayed off unless I turned it on. Only I can't use HTC widgets when using the preferred LauncherPro.

Any suggestions?

Not sure about your widget you're using, but I'm using Extended Controls, and if I have the data checked in on the settings (as no widget I've seen other than the HTC one can change that setting, they do other things to turn off data), the widget will sometimes turn it on. For example, if the data setting under the menus is active, and I'm using WiFi and turn the wireless off, the mobile network automatically turns on.

Could it be something like that?

I'm not sure if it's the same thing. I haven't noticed the change when using a wifi connection, although I have noticed that if connected via wifi, then mobile data automatically turns itself off until not connected to wifi.

It seems to be when I get an SMS. If I receive an SMS whilst my mobile data is turned off, when I wake the phone and unlock the screen to view the SMS, the data seems to turn itself back on. I previously thought it happened on it's own, but only seems to happen when I've received a message.

Yeah, that happens to me too. I think someone's mentioned it about Extended Controls. Something to do with the wi-fi and data cannot be on at the same time. If you turn one off, the other one turns on automatically and vice versa.

The only one that seems to work the way I want it is the HTC widgets for data. When I use sense, I can have wi-fi and data on at the same time and switch either of them off without affecting the other one.

It's one of the only problems I have with using LP - the data widget. I've resorted to just creating a shortcut to the mobile settings so I can still turn the mobile on using LP without messing things up. I think it might have something to do with how those mobile toggles work (renaming your APN)

I've solved it, or can at least explain it now, and you're both right.

In the help menu for extended controls app, it states that there are two ways to toggle mobile data. One is "direct control" the other is by renaming the APN behind the scenes so that the phone temporarily doesn't have access to valid APN connection credentials. The help menu states that some phones, particularly those using HTC Sense direct control doesn't work properly, so you have to choose the re-name APN method.

I would switch it to using that were it not for the fact that when enabling data, the mobile data notification appears, vanishes and then re-appears before data connects. So instead I have just done what pennyandrusty have done and created a direct homescreen shortcut to the Wireless & Network settings to turn it on and off. Not ideal, but feels cleaner that way.

Thanks to both of you for your input!

I had this problem for weeks. First thought it was the phone, then the software and so on. Was tempted to take the damn thing back before I finally realised one of the widgets was playing up, so whenever I turned it of, another turned data back on. Good job I had unlimited internet that month ;)

Glad you fixed it.

Edit: I don't think it was mentioned above, but it can also be caused by having two widgets duplicating the function somewhere in your homescreens. Like if one is set to off, and another is set to on without you noticing, the data will get stuck in a cycle where each widget will ensure it's on somehow.
