Root [MOD] Custom Boot Animations & Logos

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damages to your phone while flashing these logos & animations. If you don't know what you're doing, DON'T TRY IT. Use at your own risk!
Introduction: First of all, I would like to make it clear that there is a difference between a boot logo and a boot animation. The boot logo (also known as the splash image) is the first screen you will see when booting up your phone. The boot logo cannot be animated. The boot animation on the other hand can be animated and is the screen that is displayed after the boot logo. There are a few different methods for installing my boot logos & animations and certain ROM's files are located in different places than others so read the installation instructions carefully so you know what you're doing before you try to install anything. For those of you who are familiar with ClockworkMod Recovery, I have simplified the installation a bit by making my files flashable. If you prefer moving the files yourself with a file manager feel free to do so. Enjoy!

Installing with ClockworkMod Recovery(Recommended):

  • Download the flashable .zip above and transfer it to the main (root) folder of your sd card
  • Power off the phone and boot into CWM recovery
  • Choose install zip from sdcard then, choose zip from sdcard
  • Navigate to the boot animation package and install it
  • Once it finishes, go back to the main menu and reboot
  • Enjoy!

Installing with a File Manager:

  • Download the non-flashable .zip above and transfer it to the main (root) folder of your sd card
  • Using a file manager (with root access & system mounted as writable) move the bootanimation.zip file to /data/local/ folder
  • Enjoy!

You may also move the animation file into the /system/media folder and it will play, but keep in mind that the /data/local folder has a higher priority than it so if you have an animation installed in both places, it would play there first. Also if you decide to use the /system/media folder, you can rename your old bootanimation.zip file something else, such as 'bootanimationold.zip' that way you have it saved as a backup right where you left it. Just rename it bootanimation.zip and it will become active again.

Tip: If you don't have a file manager, I highly recommend you download ES File Explorer for free from the market. Once you get it make sure you check "root explorer" and "mount system as writable" in the settings panel and navigate to your phone's root directory by clicking the "favorites button" then the phone icon (root directory).

NOTE: Remember, if you wish to go back to the old one, all you need to do is replace the "bootanimation.zip" file from the /data/local/ folder. Your original boot animation should remain untouched in the /system/media folder.

NOTE: These may work on other devices with the same screen resolution (480x800) but are not guaranteed on others or different ROMs.

NOTE: These zip files will not work on the MIUI ROM.

Installing in Download Mode:

  • Download the non-flashable logo above
  • While powering on your phone, hold the 'power + vol down' buttons until you enter download mode. You will see "Incoming Download Mode polling, get oemsbl_mode = 1..." That's when you know you are in download mode
  • Plug your phone into your computer and move the splash.img file to /mobile/image/ folder
  • Un-plug your phone, and pull out your battery for a couple seconds
  • Power on and Enjoy!

NOTE: Remember, if you don't like the logo and choose to go back to the old one, all you need to do is replace the "splash.img" file in the /mobile/image/ folder. Your original boot logo should remain untouched if you just rename it something else before changing it.

NOTE: If you would like to create your own boot logo, you can use ziggy46's image converter tool at the top of his thread to convert your image to the required splash.img format. Ziggy's Thread

i would love to learn how to make them... :D how do you do it?

I use photoshop cs5 and adobe after effects for software. I design the layers in photoshop then I import them to after effects so I can animate the layers. Takes alot of patience but im sure you could do it!

cs5.. but honestly i haven't seen much of a difference since cs3... after effects is awesome though you should look into getting it.

Nice work chris. Like the boot animation. Dl'ed the one for TG reloaded. I'm pretty familiar with photoshop and aftereffects from a background in graphic design. Like the work you'be done here. Nice touch. I may PM you for another project/animation idea.

Is there a chance to have one made spacifically for those of us that do custom builds?

Thanks! Im all ears. I know boot animations don't do anything for our phones performance wise but sometimes it kinda gives the whole custom rom experience a boost visually... and to me its fun designing stuff. I'm sure you know how it is.

Yeah I forgot to mention that in the OP. If any devs need any graphic work feel free to ask!

Indeed I do, on more than one front. I do metal fab on the side, along with paint and bodywork (I know, weird hobbies). My first thought was to build a custom ICS ani for the guys building the ICS setup for the Triumph. For me, on the other hand, I'd just like the reloaded ani to end with a fade to my username here (and everywhere else for that matter). Not don't think it'd be too much to change the last few frames of the ani for a fade in. I have another project in mind, but I'll have to PM you seeing that it involves another forum all together.

That wouldn't be hard to do.. although i'm trying to find out why its getting cut off a short and not finishing the whole thing. If I can find a way to extend it a couple seconds or so... hmmmmmm.

On stock ROMs I know the shutdown animation would only use the first few (13 or 14 I think) frames. I think it is a 2.2 limitation. When I used the stock ROM I tried to get around it, but never found a fix. That was many months ago though, so maybe my memory is off a bit. :confused:

Yea I've heard that too... i have seen some very long boot animations on other phones. It looks kinda cool but at the same time I wanted to make mine short and simple for a quick boot up. Guess it's not a bad thing.

Very nice!! Thank you
if you change the updater-script to:
Run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "/data");
package_extract_dir("data", "/data");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "unmount", "/data");
You don't need the extra complications (mounting manually)
