Help Moment or Evo?

The Evo would be a no brainer if it weren't for the $10 4g tax. The other thing I've been seeing is that the Evo while on 4g has really bad battery life. Of course, right now all we have to go on is pre release test units. There's also the Hero to consider, also at 2.1 and cheaper than the Moment. The Moment has the physical keyboard if that's important to you, the Hero a much more active hacker community. I bought the Moment for the keyboard, but if I were looking for a android phone today to hold me over till a second gen device was available, I'd save the $50 and go with the Hero.
I'm facing a similar decision.
With the cost of the Evo 4G ($199 + $10/mo), I have to balance that against how I plan to use it past phone calls which is for web browsing and as a GPS. I don't imagine I'll tether, use a hotspot, or stream or capture hi-def video.
For that $10/mo it's still cheaper than paying for the T-Mobile line, but over the course of 2 years, that's $240 + taxes/fees.
We also know now that the Moment will get Android 2.1, and it certainly looks like the SPH-M910 Moment 2 will arrive (reportedly _before_ Evo) with Android 2.1, TouchWiz and updated hardware (bigger keypad at least). With that I'll take the Moment or Moment 2 over the Evo for the costs, and over the Hero for the keyboard.

Personal choice really. i just want an android phone not made by samsung, and i'm sure a few other would agree that is the case. I use swipe 24/7 so the physical keyboard is no longer an issue as i thought it would be. Since I will be keeping my moment as well it really doesn't matter to me. I'll just deactivate one or the other when I decide to switch between the two.
I'm sure the battery life WILL in fact suck but will be fixed at some point as with the moment. i easily crank out 12 hours exact every other day. Which is more than acceptable for me.
Either way. Choosing android is win. So enjoy either handset.

For me, I need a physical keyboard. I'm not using my phone like 15 year old kid would where it's my life and I can get good with swype or typing halves of words and letting the phone autocomplete everything. But when I need to send a work email, the keyboard is very intuitive and quick and fun to use. The screen also gets a lot less abuse because it's just for navigation.
I also like that when I slide out the keyboard everybody knows I don't have an iPhone.
Will cost you $100 less upfront and $240 less over two years which is $340. If they lower the price after the EVO comes out it will be even more.
The Moment is built like a tank. My cousin left his on the top of his SUV and took off driving. When he realized what he'd done, he went back and found it strewn all over the road. But all that had happened was that the back cover and battery popped off and the keyboard slid out. There was one tiny scratch on the corner that I couldn't even see at first. I dropped mine at the grocery store and it landed flat on it's back and didn't even wince.
I also like vanilla Android. I think the EVO also doesn't have an LED screen, so the Moment might actually be brighter.
I'm not saying the Moment is a better phone than the EVO because it is not. But the major features the EVO has (higher end specs, HDMI, Hot Spot, 4G) are things that I wouldn't use and the few advantages the Moment has (cheaper price, sturdy construction, physical keyboard, LED screen) are things I take great advantage of.
As a pure toy, nothing will top the EVO. It is also the most likely to see steady Android updates to Gingerbread and beyond. But with Sprint Premier, the new phone cycle is every 12 months, not 24 months, so you're not locked in quite as long as it seems.

As a moment owner, I would not recommend this device. The radio issue is one of the worst bugs I've ever seen. It renders your phone unusable until you reboot. Sometimes missing phone calls and texts for hours without even knowing. The moment 2 is expected to drop soon, and its nearly identicle to the original, but hopefully without the airplane/data bug.

According to noah from "phonedog" it isn't negotiable, but he also mentioned that if 1-2 years go by and your area is still 4g-less then you could probably try get some kind of credit back...which I doubt.
Anyway 4g so I don't mind the fee, although I agree that until the areas without it shouldn't be forced to pay it regardless.

No one knows how the Evo will perform. It may have plenty of bugs to be worked out.

Reviews are all over the web. General consensus: it is one of the best if not the best smartphones you can buy. Guess where the Moment is on that list. I've certainly enjoyed my Moment, and its better since 2.1, but I'd drop it in a heartbeat for an EVO.
Well current 3rd party shopping makes the Moment a steal... Many are running it as low as $50 on special right now. That being said, the Moment 2 obviously isn't coming that soon or the original would be free (just like the speculation that Palm will be sending the Pre+ soon - but not until they clear out the originals)...

Evo: 4G is coming soon to everywhere - the bigger question will be if Sprint will be around to enjoy it. Sprint is still bleeding subscribers and is hoping the Evo is the Pre of 2010 - or maybe they are hoping its not the Pre of 2010 since that was an epic fail.
If the Evo doesn't turn Sprint's fortunes around, they might be looking at the T-Mo or Verizon merger and then it won't matter as we all get stuck upgrading to LTE stuff next year anyways. If the Evo does as well as it is expected to do, and 4G comes quickly, I would bet that Samsung launches the Galaxy Pro S as the 'Moment 2' for Sprint users this fall - with 4G on board.
Sprint really pushed the Moment out there in the new Commercials and Print ads so they are more likely to get a bit of support from Samsung. Sprint did so much better with the ancient Moment vs. Verizon burying the Omnia 2 (epic fail?) due to the fact that it was WinMo & TouchWiz and was clunky at best.
I know everyone is excited to get the Evo, and I can't wait to officially have mine either, but at $500 out of contract and $10 extra per month, you're paying $750 for a phone on a network that can only use its features about 20% of the time. That's alot to ask for out of contract users - but if you are due for an upgrade - it's tough not to buy it and sell it for $750 online right now either.
PS - the early returns on the available software are amazing. Everything seems to flow well, some minor glitches, and the battery is clocking in at 5.5 hours of HEAVY use.

I must have missed it, where are the actual user reviews for the Evo?
It's not even available to the average person until June 4th. I don't count media reviews. They don't use the phone like the average user.

If you want Adobe Flash 10.1 on your phone within the year, you should probably get the HTC EVO. I say this since Flash 10.1 supposedly will now require Android 2.2 and seeing as it took half a year to release 2.1 on Samsung Moment, I wouldn't expect 2.2 to be released any time soon. The HTC EVO is supposedly going to get an update to 2.2 fairly soon after it's released.

Those are not reviews. They are previews. Big difference. Most every preview of any phone hypes it up, then after release day, after everyone rushed to get ahold of one based on the hype of the previews, you get the actual product that may or may not live up to the previews. Then you finally get real reviews, which will reveal small (huge) problems/bugs/annoyances that the previews over looked. Now some real reviews may come out a few days before release, we are still nearly two weeks out. Only previews at this point.
*edit* I see the washington post has a review up... though they only spent a few hours with the phone, so I don't know what to think of it.
@Adrift - Oh my, how totally right you are, except in the case of the wonderful BlackBerry Storm - where everyone basically said it was a POS, but over a million sold anyways.
Loosely put though, the Evo has been out for quite a while - it's the HD2 running Android on a CDMA network (or WiMAX if you're lucky)...
The HD2 had killer reviews and continues to be one of the best smartphones on a bad data network. Let's hope the Evo doesn't meet the same fate with poor WiMAX coverage.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I am hoping that the EVO lives up to it's hype and is a truely great device, that way I can jump on it... possibly before my upgrade becomes available.
I just don't like seeing people claiming how great a device is going to be based solely on previews.
