Moto Atrix or iPhone 4

I've recently sold my Atrix and purchased another iPhone 4 and here are my reasons:

- Email, I use hotmail as my primary email account, on the iPhone 4 my PC inbox and Phone always synced with one another but on Android I had to maintain both boxes which made it useless to setup the Hotmail as a sync account on the Atrix

- keyboard, I tried the Gingerbread Keyboard, Stock Moto Keyboard and Swype and not one was close to the iPhone's keyboard

- Wifi connection would disconnect and reconnect and it got annoying sometimes it took a while to get it going.

- Proximity Sensor bug on the Atrix, if I used my bluetooth headset and then use the phone's earpiece the proximity sensor will not work at all, I would have to reboot the phone in order for it to work again.

- Voice Dial Via bluetooth is useless unless the phones screen is turned on so I need to grab my phone (while I'm driving) unlock the screen and then press my bluetooth in order for me to say the command, defeats the whole purpose of voice command and a hands free device.

- Build quality simply put the Motorola Atrix feels like it cost $30 to put together nothing compared to the feel and build of the iPhone 4.

- Browser on the iPhone is better, I was able to do more things on the iPhone than the Android and I even used Dolphin HD instead of the Native Browser on the Atrix (this is excluding flash which I never used)

-the iPhone is overall more smooth and responsive with no lag.

- Data connection speeds on the iPhone I found was a lot better

- Copy and paste on the iphone is a Breeze I find it's ackward on the Android.

- The iPhone was a plug and play and I was ready to go, Android took me over an hour just to get it the way I wanted it to be, which is a great feature for most users but I like my stuff simple.

- Netflix support on iPhone

- Youtube Player I found was better presented and laid out on the iPhone

- Random reboots are brutal, especially when you're on an important call

- Speaker volume and quality is better on the iPhone, I'm referring to the loud speakers not the earpiece, call quality on the Atrix earpiece was excellent.

- As mentioned earlier the camera and screen are better on the iPhone

- Last but not least, Peace of mind, I know if my iPhone were to crap out I can walk into an Apple store and I'm good to go, since I had an AT&T unit in Canada I doubt I would have had Motorola Supporting me if the Atrix were to crap out.

So these are my reasons. All the best with your choice. Obviously the Atrix is a good phone since it's specs made me sell my previous iPhone 4 to begin with but now that I've used the Atrix I realize that there was not that many things that the Atrix could do better than the iPhone 4 which is why I switched back.

Cheers.

switched from IP4 to Atrix on monday.
Android takes some getting used to. but i'm starting to like it more and more.
They are different phones. If you want to have the best of everything you probably need 4 or 5 phones and use them each for what they are best at.
you can never have everything in one phone.
So decide what is more important to you....camera, screen, interface, openess of software,...

Tomorrow I'll be picking up a new smart phone and I'm torn between the Atrix and iPhone 4. Are there any iPhone 4 ex-owners that switched to the Atrix and have regretted it? I know the camera and display on the iPhone 4 are better than the Atrix... not sure what to do....

I personally like Android more than iOS...... but not sure which route to go.... any help?

Let's make this easy. What phone do you have now? If its an iPhone just stay with the iPhone. You will try to like android like the above iphone users but just make excuses as to why you think the iPhone is better, unless you are open minded and willing to lean the OS. If you don't, then go with the Atrix. I work for ATT and switch several people a day from iOS to the Atrix and the Inspire. Out of the 100 people I have switched from the iPhone to those two phone I think I have got 10 returns from people who don't want to bother learning the OS of Android.

Get the Atrix if:
-You want to customize it and make it your own. Whats nice about the customization? It will make your life EASIER with all the options you have, so you can set it up to fit well with your needs
-NO MORE ITUNES!!!! Drag drop and you are DONE
-Adobe Flash
-A screen that shows true colors not over saturated enhanced colors
-DLNA- iPhone will never have that because its so locked down
-Free Nav
-PUSH email
-PC Portal to operate phone through your CPU
-More free apps
-HDMI
-And of course the dual core processor (does not make a huge difference now but in the future when the phone gets honeycomb)

Customization is a "cool factor" thing, doesn't make it any easier to use than the iPhone. In fact, it's more complicated to get to that anyway.

Flash. Yay, it makes web pages even more choppy when scrolling and zooming.

iOS doesn't push email? Really? Email that works better in general and a keyboard that works is what makes things easier.

iP4 screen looks light years better than the Atrix screen.

Mapquest is a free app in the App Store that does turn by turn Nav

PC Portal is ok, needs work. Used it once just to check it out.

More free apps may be true, but that's not the be all end all of the app stores. There are many, many more apps with apple. And a couple of apps I've had on both; Shazam. Free on both. iOS version allows unlimited tagging. Android allows 5 per month, $5 for unlimited tagging. Angry Birds. Free on Android, WITH ads. A whopping 99 cents in app store. A lot of the free stuff with Android is a limited version of a paid app. Not to mention, the app store is much better overall functionality than the Market. One thing I like about the market though, is you can get online and install an app remotely.

iTunes. Seriously, what's not to like? I plug in my phone for 2 minutes, and EVERYTHING on the phone is backed up. Texts, notes, pictures call logs etc etc.

And boy how I love this Tegra 2 and a phone that isn't optimized for it. I love my random reboots. I love all the force closing of apps. I love the choppy pinch to zoom and scrolling. I love the useless tap to zoom. Yeah, "when its upgraded"...which will be when? 2.3 has been out for how long? And there are phones yet to be released that are still coming with 2.2. By the time 2.3 comes along (or 2.4 as an ATT rep told me, as 2.3 may be skipped), there will be better things out.

I've given the Atrix as much time as possible. I'm using LauncherPro and I love the layout, minus a couple of things. Email isn't as good. I hate the keyboard (takes up full screen when in landscape, can't view what I'm replying to; not nearly as responsive---but that's the whole screen in general). Facebook app is like a 5 year old designed it compared to IP app. Battery life is awful...just awful. Maybe Android can catch up in a couple of year, but it's nowhere near as smooth and functional as iOS right now. Want to show off cool screen transitions and some widgets? Go Android. Want your stuff to work smoothly and last all day? iOS

The only thing I really hate about the iPhone is that the browser doesn't reflow text after pinch zoom (and you can only scroll a few pages at a time or you get a checkerboard pattern for a second). Why does Apple have to choose the size font on my browser? Would text feflow hinder the "magicalness" of the iPhone If those things changed and a the iphone at a 4" screen I would seriously consider getting one. Jailbreaking is simple for added customization--a lot simpler than installing custom roms on my droid.

I have a Nexus One currently but if I had to choose it would be the iPhone 4 for me.

Comes down to personal preference:

- HID bluetooth keyboard support
- True netflix app that streams video
- Better camera photos

vs
- Google maps navigation
- Larger screen
- Better notification system

The iPhone is a simpler almost mind numbing experience. Not unlike joining a cult.
HAHA well said my friend. I have owned an iPhone 4 before and I can say that I HATED the fact that I couldnt do anything. Apple tries to make it "simpler" but IMO they made it harder to do simple tasks like copy and paste or sync contacts because you have to know how to do it instead of click a menu button and choose it. The experience felt like trying to find simple information on an annoying poorly laid out website.

I just got my atrix yesterday and I can say from experience that the interface on the atrix, while it is annoying sometimes, is much better than the iPhone by far.

The Simplicity of the iPhone can actually be annoying and harder to use than android. Some things are impossible to find because of how its laid out. Why would you want the same phone as everyone else though? Thats pretty boring. And android isnt glitchy if you arent a noob. Want a phone that actually uses its hardware? Get android. If you wanna be like everyone else and be limited to doing nothing near what your phone is capable of? Get an iPhone.

Anyone who thinks customizing your phone makes your life harder really does 'deserve' the iphone. I had the IP4 for 6mos, and even after jailbreaking it couldn't get it to do what I wanted for everything. Customizing a device can make your life simpler by making your device do things *your* way. Sure, it can take a couple hours (I've easily spent 4-5hrs so far and I'm still not done) *but* once you do it, yer done, and the *thousands* of hours you use the device after customization make up for the few hours you put into it.

I acknowledge the IP4 has a better camera, screen, browser (for some things) and does some things right out of the box. My main problem was that when I ran into difficulty with something stupidly designed, I wasn't allowed to change it, or even work around it. I always get a chuckle when one person in a group of isheep gets an email and they all dive for their phones because there is a single, unchangeable notification tone for email on the iphone. FAIL. Customizable ringtones is not just for the hipster or tweenybopper. It can actually be a very practical, and useful feature.

I spent 6mos with the ip4, and while the keyboard was pretty damn good, I *never* got used to the predictive text implementation. It would put a tiny little widget up in the context of the document that I would have to cancel by hitting a tiny 'x' in the corner or it would auto-replace what I was typing. Of course, since my eyes were on the keyboard, I almost never saw this until it was too late. On the advice of a friend, I installed the swiftkey pro keyboard for android and guess what, the predictive text options are displayed *right* above the keyboard in three large buttons that are easy to see and easy to hit, and much more accurate than the ip4 predictive text.

The ip4 email client is ok, but I sorely missed the shortcuts that the gmail app gives me for selecting multiple emails, and it is by no means bug-free. I frequently had sync issues with gmail (uses standard MS activesync) that would fill my ip4 inbox with 'empty' emails.

I've always maintained that if you want to be told how to use your phone, the iphone is for you. I learned first hand just how damn frustrating this can be. The gorgeous screen and cameras just couldn't keep me down that road, and I switched to android. The sheer joy of being able to 'fix' or workaround (just about) any roadblock is an almost daily occurance.

You're joking, right? Copy/paste couldn't be any simpler on the iPhone. And I can do it in any app on my 3g. Tried to copy a tweet to text it to someone the other day...can't do it in the Twitter app on the Atrix. Have to "share" it. Several extra steps compared to the iPhone, where you just long press in the text then expand it to whatever you want to copy.

Hard to sync contacts? I'd call it the same on both OS', unless you don't have an exchange account set up. My iPhone 3g syncs contacts OTA via my gmail account. Add a contact to my phone, automatically updates on my gmail account. Ohhhh sooo difficult.

If you're gonna call the iPhone out for things, do better than that. My 2 generation old iPhone 3g is as good and better than the Atrix on 2.2 at the tasks you mention.

It's funny that some call apple users sheep, and cult like....when a LOT of android users are exactly the same way. Whatever android does, its better! I like to use what works, couldn't care less what brand it is. And, outside of customizing your homescreens, having cool homescreen transitions and using widgets that drain your battery....iOS works better

Do you realize how absurd that sounds? Wow.

You'd rather be able to fix things ALMOST DAILY than have something that works, but is less customizable?

And you CAN change the email notification if you jailbreak. Which is an easier task than rooting Android.

Some of you are VERY objective...oh wait, no you're not.

It is only easier if you know how to do it. Apple puts a lot of functionality to make things easier, and it is easier, IF you know how to do it. If not then its just a pain. I have nothing against iPhone, despite my profile haha. I prefer android due to being able to actually do things with it. In some cases iPhone is better and in others its not. It depends what YOU want to use your phone for. I have owned an iPhone and I hated not being able to do so many basic things.

For people who like simplicity, iPhone is better in most cases. For people who love customizability, Android is better BY FAR. iOS WORKS better, but wtf is the point of having good hardware if you are bottle necked by the OS?

Im not here to win an android vs iphone flame war. Have fun

To be honest, get either. I just went from an iPhone 4 to an Atrix, but not because the Atrix is better. I've had the iPhone 4 since launch and I love it, but the Atrix is an amazing phone. I've previously had the Nexus One, G1, and other iPhones. You've got to appreciate a good phone for what it is.

very good thread...i am in vacillation. I currently have an iphone4 and is very tempted to get an atrix just because im bored of iOS. However I am scared I might miss ip4 as it was my first smartphone ever. Used to be a shitty motorola clamshell before that..

The ONLY reason I'd ever get an iPhone 4 over an Atrix is for the Netflix app.

Once they finally release it on Android, I'll be completely satisfied.

settle down, fanboi, you misunderstood. The iphone 'just works' for people like you. For me, it was hopelessly broken. I was no android fanboi when I got the iphone, and was committed to trying to make it work for me. I knew quite a few happy iphone users and liked enough about the phone to give it my best effort.

unfortunately, iOS ties your hands to such an extent that i was forced to live with its many deficiencies. My point was that with android I can 'fix' those things that don't work the way I want them to work, and typically the 'fixing' involves downloading an app, or making a configuration change.

you clearly like the iphone and that's great. You should have no reason to react so defensively to those who do not like it. The fact that you do suggests an underlying problem.... ;) It's funny that all but one of the 'happy iphone users' here at work have either switched to android or are in the process of doing so.

i feel like I need to address the 'no lag' issue on the iphone because it's such a pervasive myth. Apple pulled a microsoft from the win95 days by having GUI elements 'preload' to appear faster and smoother. This was not noticeable before I got used to the interface, but once I started to predict where I would input next after a GUI transition, I started to beat iOS to it. I noticed that my touch input wouldn't be recognized for a second or two after a transition. For eg, slide to unlock and start typing too fast and the first digit of your code is not recognized. The most annoying was when I would open a 'note' (in the 'notes' app) and tap to bring up the keyboard and get nothing. 2 taps later I would finally get he app to recognize that yes, I'm trying to type here and need the damn keyboard.

The ONLY reason I'd ever get an iPhone 4 over an Atrix is for the Netflix app.

Well, Netflix is not going to be released "on Android". It will be released on select handsets, not Android-wide.

And discussion between the Atrix and IP4 isn't a discussion. IP4 is nearly a year old and lacking performance wise...and who knows if it will be able to handle all the features of iOS 5 when it is released. If you want an IP, you might as well wait.

You couldn't be a bigger douche if you tried. You geeks that call people "fanboi's" need punched in the face. I've used WinMo, blackberry, iOS and, most recently, Android. I've been nothing but objective in any of my statements. I've simply conveyed what I've experienced.

And no, I don't like my iPhone (3g). But I'll take it's lag and poor resolution and sometimes freezing for a couple of seconds over my email not pushing, apps force closing, random reboots and a keyboard i don't like (that one is obviously pure preference).

I have a feeling I'd really enjoy PURE Android, but I haven't got that option. And I didn't run and get an IP4, obviously. I'm waiting for the next round of releases to go play with them and see what I like. But the Atrix was a poor experience for me, and it has nothing to do with my ability or inability, as some would say, to "make it work my way". I'm somewhat defensive because of idiots throwing out the term "fanboi" like their 12 years old, and "sheeple" and whatever else. I'm brand loyal to no one. I give my business to things that work.

I understand why the Atrix was a poor experience, I have had my woes with the phone aswell. Your problem isn't with android though. Its that you buy flagship phones the moment they come out and expect them to work perfectly like the iPhone. Thats not how android works, the competition between companies makes them have to rush to release their phones before someone else beats them to the punch.

For example look at the playbook. The tablet is a complete fail. Back when they first released the details about it it was the best of the best. But since they took their time to tweek and perfect the tablet, they ended up making the release date at the worst possible time.

Get a phone that has been out for awhile made by a trusted carrier and has been updated and fixed since release (dont get samsung obviously haha) and you wont have as many issues. Unless you cant live without your few weak features your iPhone offers. Or if you are a noob and cant handle android ;)

Well spoken and I share your enthusiasm with trying different devices, not being locked down to brand loyalty over functionality and practical use, etc. I'm a bit surprised to see comments like that on what I'd consider a forum of mostly adults using smart phones, but obviously like any forum on the web there is no shortage of immaturity at times.

Back on topic, I avoided AT&Ts Ip4 by choice, while I have a 32g Itouch and enjoyed everything from surfing Safari to texting on it, nice keyboard setup, simle, etc, I couldn't come to terms with apples nonsense warranty and monthly insurance costs. Now Verizon's ip4 seems cool, 1ghz Snapdragon cpu, etc, not sure how or if it's better than AT&T's, but supposedly the insurance/warranty stuff is better with Verizon. NASA gets a huge discount with AT&T so that's who we use. Like the i4 but the Atrix is in a different class, while comparable it seems thus far a somewhat better phone that i4. Maybe i5 would be a better comparision, when/if that happens.

First off, I must take offense at your douche comment. I have the mad skillz, and can be an *enormous* douche when I 'try'.

It was just a little ribbing is all. There's really no need to get so worked up about it. I was making the point that android lets me make my phone work the way I want and you took it the wrong way. I agree that the iphone is definitely better for some people, of that I have no doubt. You have very effectively argued that you are one of those people, so why have you not returned your atrix and gone back to the better phone? NOTE: this is not a rhetorical question or a personal attack, just a legitimate question.

Dude go to the apple forums if your just gonna be a **** to everyone here. incase you were wondering the site is called ANDROIDforums, not im an apple lover and i flame android threads because i had a bad experience with one, either find a android you like, or stick with your ip4 and leave this thread alone. its cool that you love your iphone, good for you that you found a phone with as much customization abilitys as a microwave. We personally on these forums like our devices and want to talk about them without being ranted on. I personally love my Atrix for the sheer DUAL CORE TEGRA 2 GAMING that im doing on it, and frankly the iphone 4 cant touch that right now. But for real go to the apple forums you are not doing anyone any good.

I see the inevitable jealous people have come out from under the floorboards again. can samsung please release their dual core sooner so these little trolls who can't afford to upgrade to a next-gen phone have someone new to hate?

You're right about buying new "flagships" is a problem, especially when they contain new technology/hardware. But don't pretend to know my history of purchases.

This is the 2nd time I went with the new "big thing". The first was a BB Storm. I always liked the idea of a phone that was all screen, but loved having a regular keyboard. I thought, if done right or course, the Storm solved my issues. It almost did, but wasn't quite there.

I then went with the IP3g...with the 3gS having already been out. Which is what I currently have.

My upgrade was available in January. I waited over a month for the Atrix to drop. Got a great deal on it (129, plus best buys "buy back" program for free). Gave it the full 30 days. Now back to the 3g, waiting for something else.

Not exactly a pattern of going after the "next" flagship. My contract with ATT isn't up until July, so I have limited choices. There's nothing out currently that fits what I want. I'd try the Inspire, but I want ffc. Captivate has issues I don't want to deal with (per LOTS of people here)--and also no ffc. IP4 is old--and as I've stated before, I'm somewhat bored with iOS.

So what's probably going to happen is, I'm going to wait to see if the next iPhone brings anything new to the table (and I'd prefer a 4" screen). If I don't like that, my contract will be up and I'll be free to choose any phone from any carrier. (I realize I can do that now, but I'd rather be stuck with a phone for 18 months instead of paying full retail).
