Motorola is locking the Droid X... no Rooting allowed?

Because the vast majority of consumers who buy either the iPhone or an Android phone do not Jailbreak, root, and/or use custom roms. And when you evaluate stock iOS against stock Android, the latter is still much more flexible, open, and customizable.

So granted, this might not be the phone for those who like to tinker even further, but you really can't blame Verizon and the rest of the carriers for doing this. We might not like it, but they are protecting their business model from those who would use these tools to get free tethering, for example. We can certainly argue the value of the products the carriers offer, as well as the screwed-up North American cell phone market... but all of the carriers are going to start doing this as Android becomes more popular. At least they aren't locking out side-loading yet like AT&T is doing.

The OS isn't locked down, Android is still as open as ever. Its Motorola who chose to not give us access to change it how we like it.

No you can still change it you just can't put it back in the phone. The OS is open the phone isn't.
