Move From iOS

This was something I worried about, so much so I pre ordered the GS2 three times and cancelled before actually purchasing it.
I've had iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4, but to enjoy these phones required me to jailbreak them. After jailbreak, all is fine until you decided to download something not compatible and your phone freezes, leaving you to do a full restore and lose absolutely everything on the jailbreak because IOS has been updated.
My main worries will be the worries a lot of iPhone users have, so let me offer some advice.
Firstly contacts were a concern, so set up a gmail account. Simply sync your iTunes with Google instead of Outlook. On installing gmail to Galaxy S2, the contacts just jumped across, I was chuffed because it was so simple.
I only sorted this second concern last night and it's simply awesome. I had over 300 tunes on iTunes and thought these were lost, but last night I Googled about and found a site called doubletwist.
I installed it and synched it with all my calendars, bookmarks and music.
After, I clicked on the music tab and all my music from iTunes was on doubletwist. I connected my phone to pc, synched and you will never guess were all my iTunes are now.
The problem with iPhone is you get too used to it. IOS 5 is going to have iCloud, as long as you pay a monthly payment. Find your phone using mobile me, as long as you pay a monthly payment.
I'm glad I took the plunge and will never let a company dictate to me again.

Forgetting music in the iCloud, iCloud really isn't much. (Not sure what the music actually does, I lost interest in the keynote)

But cloud has been around on Android for AGES! Where are apps? Where is calendar? Where are contacts? Where are docs?

THE CLOUD my friends. :p (it just doesn't have a keynote, but it's been there for ages!)

If only I haven't spent over $700 in buying this SGS2, I would smash this piece of crap and wait for iphone5.

Each time the screen is turned off either manually or by pressing the power button, then if I want to wake it again, I have to re-enter the pin (or draw the pattern). If I want to delay this pin entry, I have to BUY a bloody app. Iphone does this as part of its basic design, why can't Android do that too??? Not that hard!!!!

Everywhere I turn for some features - there's a PAID APP. What is really the true cost of an Android phone ownership??? On iphone, I have never had to buy an app, besides an ssh client (which is admittedly free on android). Everything else just works so nicely.

<end rant> I'm sooooo frustrated @#$!#@#!##!

Thanks for letting me vent a bit :D

iOS has many more paid apps. But your looking for apps that increase the usability of the phone. Apps like that are generally rejected from the App Store but my guesses are if they were there, they'd make you pay also. And generally where there is a paid app, there are free alternatives, sometimes equally as good. Not to mention you can buy it and then get a full refund within 15 minutes if you don't think it's with it.

For your delay problem. Try Password Delay Free. That should do what you want. There are also alternatives such as no password lock but security apps. So if your phone is stolen, you can remotely wipe it and hence none of your personal details are lost.

Of course there is the issue of the time it takes you to do that, but the same applies for a 1 minute delay for the code. That`s enough time to look at whatever personal details you don't want a thief looking at. There are many ones that cost, but

Yep - probably - but with ads

Samsung Dive can wipe out your phone remotely too.

My point is that iphone does all the basics straight out of the box without needing any PAID 2rd party apps (or free with ads). Simple, straight forward music sync without third party apps (doubletwist paid app or ads?), music playback control from locked screen without third party apps (thankfully winamp is free) to name a few.

I ad per day. It's not much.

iOS also has built in ads.

Look, it's clear your mind is set, so I'm not going to try and argue with you. Just trying to provide alternatives, to the issues you have with your phone because it's not an iOS device.

I appreciate your suggestions nevertheless.

I dont know how long you have had your phone but dont sound like it has been very long. I dont have the GS2 yet. I have a Galaxy S and i have to assume they have some of the same features and you have choices for your lockscreen. I cant imagine you MUST use the PIN or draw a pattern to unlock the screen. You have to look because im sure there are other choices where you dont have to use that.
Look in the settings>display>unlockscreen for more options.

Took me a good week of constant use to really start to like teh Android system and you will find new things as you go for a few weeks.

As for Ad's with free Apps...go to the market and get the Ad free App. It will get rid of 95% of them. I use Tweetcastor for Twitter and it didnt get rid of that Ad on the free version but it is only one ad at the top of the twitter page and dont bother me.

have used ios, then decided to try android on htc hero, used it for few days, couldn't get used to it. went back to ios again. recently bought a htc wildfire to give it another go ... this time though .. things are completely different (i mean my experience), i am not sure why but i think it is a lot easier to use, a lot more sensitive(touchscreen) and a lot more app.

FWIW, with the exception of one app, all the iOS apps I have on our iPhone and iPad are free, and aren't even ad supported. While I appreciate the wide range of free apps on my Android devices, I never felt like I was being hit up for more paid apps to create a really usable device (in the context of iOS). DropBox, IMDB, Cisco VPN, Netflix, Engadget, etc., free and the [free] OEM apps for web, music, video, email, media/content purchase/ management are pretty outstanding.

iCloud will be a _free_ service that pushes/syncs content automatically via the new API (so it's a little different vs. dropbox). The pay service is for Match Music where they create 256K AAC (DRM free) versions of your library on the cloud service and push the music to your different devices or upload where a match isn't available for $25/year (which compares to Amazon or Google music offerings).

Don't get me wrong, there are some things I totally dig on Android, buying a SGS II (to replace my SGS, and my temporarily owned Atrix), but if we're going to compare Apple services, let's make sure we cover all the details :)

Yeah exactly my point!

Unfortunately this "Ad Free App" requires the phone to be rooted. Besides, it's more of a hack.

I wonder why the many apps on iphone aren't ad supported and they are totally free or at least feature inferior (which is fine for me as long as the free version does what I want - I much prefer that than the ads!!)

Even better: if there's an Ad Free version of an app, that's available by tossing the developer a measly $2-$3, do that and _support_ Android development. :)

Circumventing the revenue model or not directly supporting the developer's efforts is a good way to reduce the amount of quality software.

Reason why is because Apple get their money from the $99 annual fee to be be a developer. Not to mention the revenue they get from their overpriced devices. Google generate revenue from ads.

That would be an incentive for the developer to charge for the app then, id think. Apple only gets a small percentage of the paid apps from developers along with a fee.

i havent read every post on this thread, but i noticed that some people talk about lack of sync (as compared to iphone/itunes integration). well, i love how everything is synced with my google account.. contacts, email, calendar, tasks, docs are all synced great.. even apps n settings, apparently, although im yet to find out how that works (hopefully not until i get a new phone).. itunes syncs great with a little program called itunes agent.. probably the only area where sync is not supported very well is for pics n videos, where i gues the best way is to manually drap n drop.. but im not complaining at all

Completely false. iCloud will give everyone 5GB free (not including apps, books and a few other media sources). So how about you get your facts correct before propagating libelous lies.

The majority of you are Apple haters, who will dismiss their advantages as unnecessary or cosmetic. Yet when Apple doesn't have a feature, it suddenly becomes the hot topic of discussion and abusing Apple is everyone's favourite past time.

You can't libel a company or a service, only an individual. ;)

A bit harsh, don't you think? It is rather ironic that, after dissing Android and accusing them of copying iOS for so long, Apple themselves adopt features that were distinctive to Android. Perhaps they've come to realise that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and it's simple evolution to adopt best-practice from other sources?

Above all, please remember the Android Forums' maxim: debate the message, not the messanger.

Kies is widely regarded as terrible. It wasn't available at all for Mac until recently and the Mac version is missing some important functionality compared to the Windows version (no firmware functionality, limited backup options). I am prepared to be corrected, but I don't believe complete backups (ie literally everything to restore a wiped phone to the backed up state) are possible without rooting the phone. Most significantly from my point of view is the complete absence of effective iTunes syncing.

I love my SGS2 but this is the one area where, quite frankly, I think that Android sucks completely.

It's all very well talking about syncing to the cloud, but that's a non-starter with a large music collection.

Android does not support the Apple Lossless codec. That's understandable but disappointing. Less understandable is that Android doesn't support ID3 V2.4 tags so two thirds of your music comes up with missing metadata (for which I highly recommend MediaFix - it's free and very effective). Selecting which music to sync (out of my ~100GB of music) can't be done by simple dragging and dropping. All in all, it's a bloody mess.

My SGS2 is a much better phone in almost every respect than my iPhone but desktop integration but the support software is infinitely better.
