Root Moving from 2.3.9

yeah. I even went back to find a version of 4.7 and tried and it just reinstalled as 4.9. A friend suggested i use a fancy schmancy uninstall program that checks for leftover bits and after i ran that and reinstalled, it still came up as 4.9!

I'm done for the night, pissed off, time for a drink!
hmmmm,,cant say i blame you ,,why dont you just root and install bootstrap then use maderstock zip ?

Don't i need RSD working to root?
no you dont need rsd to root just download z4 root and move it to your phone then open it and click permanent root and once it roots it will reboot then download bootstrap($4)from market then apply the zip,,,,im not sure about the drivers i believe you have the right ones

try to redownload it,,,are you downloading and transfering from your computer or downloading from your x??try the opposite of whatever method your trying and see if that works,,,this is most odd

i ended up just moving it into the download folder, updated thru bootload, bootlooped, battery pulled, held home+power, and... VOILA!

thanks so much for all of your help, this forum "rocks hard, tasty abs, washerboard style... glistening in the sun"!

ooh, here's a question: before i turn off the phone to go to the bootloader menu, should I make sure the USB mode is in PC mode, WIndows sync, data storage, or charge only?

I don't need to change any of the settings in RSDLite do i?

Colchiro, I tried that link for drivers, 4.9.0, and its dead. Do you have a copy of the file you could upload somewhere?

Thanks for all of your help folks!

It would be awesome if this could all be done how it worked back when the first leak came out. All I had to do was put the update.zip file on my SD root, go to the home-power screen and click update from SD card. and poof, everything worked.

As far as any mode to put your x in prior to sbf the answer is it does not matter as it wont read what mode your in while in bootloader mode ...that's all it will recognize

So just to confirm, the Maderstcok update file will work if we're currently on 2.3.9? I read through that thread and it lists all of the previous 2.2 leaks, except for 2.3.9. I'd like to get updated as easily as possible...

yes the maderstok zip should indeed work just fine

yeah, it worked for me last night. i'm now in the process of flashing Fab's Apex 1.4.0.

Thanks for the confirmation everyone. So the best option for me since I'm on 2.3.9 and unrooted is to (thanks gmenfan83):

1. download z4 root and move it to your phone then open it and click permanent root
2. download bootstrap($4)from market then apply the zip
3. reroot using z4 and reinstall bootstrap
4. install custom ROM

Does this seem right? Does the phone get wiped anywhere in this process? I'd just rather not have to reinstall all my apps if it's not absolutely necessary. But if it's strongly suggested, I may just do it.

Nope, they all work, just checked.

Here are the motorola drivers and here is the download for RSD Lite 4.9. I changed the link for RSD Lite (from same page) so you don't need to install WinRar.

I'm sorry, yes, the Motorola drivers page is there, but the actual exe isn't. Let's see what I can find.

you will have to in fact wipe data when installing a new rom, your apps should reinstall through the google cloud ,after you sign in open the market and the should auto install, you will lose data for those apps though so if there is any data you wish to save you can do so through titanium backup prior to flashing your rom, although i dont prefer to i like to start my data off clean after an install
and your steps are correct but after you root the second time you will have to reinstall bootstrap then flash your rom, just follow the directions for maderstok zip and your rom of choice and you should be just fine:D

note:.....after you root and install bootstrap the second time be sure to create a backup through bootstrap then reboot then flash your rom
this backup is your way out for suture ota and such and i even use it to flash roms from a clean base ,,,this backup is crucial

Thanks Colchiro, I'll give it a shot once i get home tonight. If the RSD method doesn't work I'll try the maderstcok. As far as that goes, since i'm not intersted in staying rooted or applying ROMS, I can just skip the last two steps that birdie800 listed correct?

Thanks to everyone, hopefully i'll get this sorted out soon.

Ooh, also, my bootloader is 30.01, could this be playing havok with this process?

If your intent is to not be rooted, then yes, just step 1 and 2 would get you there.

As a computer IT tech, I personally LOVE the idea of being rooted and having bootstrap available to image my phone and Titanium Backup to backup the apps and data. The recovery image returns your entire phone (less the sd card) to the way it was at the time it was imaged. Titanium is basically just a file backup. It's not just about installing roms. (To each his own.)

I'm no expert on RSD Lite. I've only needed once to fix a boot-loop problem, then I quickly reloaded a backup. Re: the bootloader version, I believe that's a non-issue.

I followed the RSDlite troubleshooting that i saw in the root threads. followed these directions
Flash process fails immediately with error "Failed Flashing process. (0x7100)":
RSDLite has a bug that will cause the flash process to fail. I found the answer on these forums after weeks of searching so I will quote the OP and link to the original post. Please thank the OP if this helps you.

To determine if this bug is your problem, go into the directory you installed RSD Lite (for Win7 x64 the default is C:\Program Files (x86)\Motorola\RSD Lite\) and look for a file that starts with "FlashErrorLog" (if multiple exist, use the last modified). Open it, and if you see something like this:
Code:
Line: 865
ERROR: \\?\c:\SPRecovery_ESE81.sbfwtƒyo
