I think you misread.
Once the "To" box is highlighted, press the Menu key, then select People. It'll bring up your contacts, then just check the boxes.

There is another way that I use to:
start typin a persons name as you would normally do it the to field and select that person.
At this point you will be sending to one person as you normally do right?
Just click on the to text area again
It will move the current contact lower and let you start typing another one,
If you don't get what i mean, come back, but try first, its pretty simple.

There is another way too... after you've selected your first contact by typing their name and then choosing the correct option from the suggestions that pop up, simply tap the To: box again and the first name drops down allowing you to repeat the process - type and select. Keep going until your happy!

And another way.....if you want to do this regularly to the same people.
In your Contacts set up a Group.......Select People, then its the third icon on the bottom of the screen. Add the people using "Add Group". You can now send a group message to them by clicking on the group you have made
