Music/sound quality?

Rehearsal Assistant has the option of recording in .wav format. SOunds pretty good. Ya know, if you're like me and you use your phone to record ideas, riffs, etc.

Just thought you'd like to know id you didn't already.

Matt

Thanks! I'll try it out soon. I would love a 4 track on this but that's asking for too much

I am an audio nut. If it is not on vinyl its going to sound bad. So I stick with 128 mp3. So I can put more on what ever I'm using. I detest itunes and all the silly things it does with my music. Fade out arg! I say it again I am impressed with the sound quality on the eris. I could live with out the cutting out but really haven't heard anything that is better then vinyl

agreed! former dj myself. NOTHING sounds better than vinyl. I'm completely happy with the audio on the eris though. I'm not trying to blow my head off just listen to some music in my car.

could someone point me to a way i can turn my 128kb songs to 320kb songs....if possible?
thanks :)

Your not going to get better sound out of the file. It's like taking a picture of a painting and enhancing the picture. It's not going to be as good, as just retaking the picture. Get it?

After lurking this is the thread that motivated me to register.

I'm not a "musician" but I've played guitar for a number of years, built my own effect pedals, and done some comprehensive research on the 'tone chain" including studying what makes good guitar amps tick. Also starting to dabble in recording.

A good set of ear buds makes ton of difference. I personally don't think you need to spend $100+ to get good ones but $20 walmart ones are gonna suck hard.

After reading this thread I went back and played the same 192 mp3 on both my iPod classic (flat eq) and Eris and can say that they are both comparable. The ipod had a lot more head room (volume) but they bot sound very good. I am hoping for some eq in the future, but over all I enjoy listening to the Eris. If it had 80 gigs of storage then I would be happy with it.

I agree with Charlie81 about the flat eq. I've been a mid-scoop guy for years, and while I still like it for casual listening when I have really wanted to listen to something I've been going for a flat eq. It's different but you just have to "change your ears" for lack of a better term. You hear things you've missed with an over eq'd output.

Impossible. Think of an mp3 as a bad photocopy. Not everything is legible, but enough is that you can make sense of it. There is no way to know what the missing words are, unless you look at the original.

It would be like trying to make a reproduction of a painting from a blurry photo. Can't be done.

The only real way to do that is to replace all you music with songs recorded at higher bitrates. This, of course will also take up more space on your sd card.

this all makes me sad :(

im going to try this later though...it does make the file bigger but maybe i`ll be ok with that :)

Are you sure? What does bitrate have to do with volume? I hope your suggestion works, but I'll be flabbergasted if it does.

I would seek another music source. Rerip your cds with itunes or media player. Make sure every volume control is set correctly... phone media volume, car stereo volume, amplifier, etc.

Just about every mp3 I've encountered (96kbps-320kbps) has been at about the same volume range.

Good luck.

Matt

Higher bitrate usually translates into higher sound quality. Higher sound quality, at least for me, usually translates into better sound and higher volume for the song. I don't know if the two always go hand in hand, but it is usually the case for me. Of course the original source of the music is a big factor. My main point was that he/she should rip the music again or get it from a different source to achieve better sound quality.

Here's a rather obvious way to see if your mp3s are at fault: play a song with Pandora, then the same one from your mp3 library. See how they compare.

Matt

Very interesting... I actually have been incredibly impressed with the Eris' speaker quality and volume, it is very clear. It blows my co-irker's iPhone 3GS out of the water. When I listen to Pandora at work, I actually only have the volume at half and it is plenty loud. It really does sound like you have a bad unit, no pun intended.

I also would suggest that you test out other things like Pandora and mabe Amazon Mp3 to see if you can tell a difference. It not, you have a lemon.

No pun achieved, either. If I find out the complaint here is about the phone's speaker... but, no. No one would complain about that.

Serenity now.

I think music through my Eris sounds decent, considering we're talking about MP3. All of my MP3's are VBR, encoded using the highest setting. I've never listened with headphones, just had it plugged into the radio in my car.

It all starts with the quality of your music files. Like many 'young' people today, they think that an MP3 file at 128 or 256k is great. Not true, at all.

The nice thing about the Eris is that it can play true wav files and flac files, too.

Make sure your music files are of the highest quality.

I have noticed, however, that it would be nice to have some basic EQ; even as simple as bass/treble controls would be nice.

Is anyone aware of a player for the Eris that offers EQ or 'tone' controls?

Thanks

96?
i need my music louder and i have not been able to achieve that.
well...i did a lil with vloud.com
but not good quality.

I don't think there is one that works properly. The one or two that I have seen in the market have terrible reviews and people say that they just don't run right.

As I posted before, there is talk of 2.1 having a global EQ.

MP3 files are just that; mpeg compression. The compression is partly used to make the file smaller, thus the ability to have more files (tunes) on your player. The lower the bit rate, the lesser the quality.

If you rip a CD to your PC in a lossless format such as wav, you get the full, uncompressed file, just as it was put on the CD (more or less). Full wave files can be anywhere from 944kbps to 1100kbps, or even more, depending on how the CD was created.

WMA lossless is also a respectable format. The big thing to remember is the amount of songs that you can store on your card - if the files are full wav at approx. 1000kbps, just do the math; for every one file this size, you would be able to get almost four MP3 files at 256k. So, suffer quantity for quality. In my opinion it's worth it. Just have a few extra SD cards on hand with more tunes!

You also mentioned your headphones. There is a hug difference and quite frankly 100 bucks can get you a great set of 'closed ear' phones that should sound very good. Earbuds suck. period.

I use a set of Bose NC phones. Over priced, but they were a gift. They sound great.

Hope this info helps.

I listen to it over bluetooth in my car and the sound over bluetooth is better than my wife's iphone 3gs over bluetooth. The only complaint I have is that music tends to cut out once in a while over my eris.

Bluetooth wireless is meant to be a convenience, not a method of transmitting audio with the utmost of quality.

Thank you mr. audio policeman! I was just comparing the audio quality I experienced between to similar phones. Which is what I thought we were doing here, not getting into the technical audio clarity specifications of said bluetooth mr. policeman.

Relax! We're all entitled to offering our general opinions in this forum. This thread started with 'Zoltan' complaining about the quality of his Eris. How did this turn into a comparison of to (two) phones, anyway?
