Root My 4g wont go into debug mode

Ok. I have a phone with HBoot 2.18.

I went into Settings> Applications> Development and selected to have debugging. That went ok with the usual disclaimer.

Unfortunately no matter what cord I use (I have a few) and no matter what port I use (tried all 3 on my laptop, and all of them on my wife's laptop) I cannot go into debugging. I can get the phone to charge but no debugging.

I've tried doing a flash with a RUU but it wont flash, probably because it wont go into debug. I also tried to going into fastboot and I cannot go into fastboot usb.

I'm thought maybe the port was corroded and I scraped it with a pin but that didn't help either.

Someone throw me some ideas please.

Debugging issue aside for a sec, is your computer able to connect to the phone via disc drive?
When you plug your phone in, do you have options available to mount as disc drive, charge only, tether etc?
What rom/kernel are you on?
I'm sure there is more info needed but I need breakfast first!:D

Sorry. While posting this I got distracted and didn't put in the necessary details.

I just bought this device off ebay. This was a fairly beat up device, case mostly mangled. I have another phone that had a good housing but died in a soldering accident and I basically just swapped the case out.

The phone will charge when I plug it into the wall and it'll also charge when I plug it into the laptop. I've tried multiple cords and (as mentioned before) different ports. It just wont go into debug mode. Charges fine. I have currently set it to charge only and that's working fine. Up until this point I hadn't tried Disk drive and that's not working either... Interesting.

This thing is completey stock. Android 2.3.5. BB 2.15. Stock recovery. S-on

I'm trying to root this. I want to put a custom recovery (not so important) and I want to put a nice rom (important).

So, at this point the issue is, your phone is only able to be charged via usb.
If you have tried different cords and different ports and are not rooted, I would venture to say your usb port is no good for data transfer.
Unless someone else has a different suggestion, I would say try to find a new usb port online and replace it.

Replace the usb port? You're kidding right? I'm not good with a soldering iron and with a component that big I might as well pick up a big hammer and hope I can scare the phone into submission! LOL

what happens when you select usb debugging? you mentioned you get a popup giving you the info. so what happens after that? how do you know it is turned off?

lol, yeah, I know. These phones have issues with the usb ports going bad unfortunately....and buying it off of ebay, you're taking a chance ya know?:(
And yes, it does look like a daunting task...for me anyway...little soldering experience and with little connections it's gotta be tough:p
Like I said, perhaps someone else will offer some easier advice than mine.
I googled a little about the subject of replacing usb ports...alot of different info out there.
If I think of anything, I will post back, I promise.:)

@ Mike. You're right they didn't sell it with one in it... but I used put one of mine in the phone to try out the Disk drive thing. No love. It'll change from Charging only to drive mode but the computer will not pick it up.

@ Ocnbrze. When you first select to turn on debugging a little window pops up. Allow USB debugging? USB debugging is intended for development purposes only. blah blah blah read log data. I say OK to that. You might've forgotten or it might've slipped your mind. I've turned on debugging so many times I dont really pay attention to what it says. Had to turn it off and back on to see what it actually says.

I think the problem might be + and - work. Thus I can charge. But data+ and data- one or both have issues so its not really communicating with the computer. Anyone got any ideas on how I can root this thing without it being able to access the computer? Or flash a rom? Or put a custom recovery?
