My Battery Life Extended

Using them to kill poorly written apps is fine, but using them to automatically clean up your RAM is the problem.

But unless your life depends on said dodgy coded app remove it because generally speaking there is always an alternative that will be coded properly. ;) :p

Not got the calendar app in your battery usage stats have you? I also don't use any widgets at all, I only use shortcuts, widgets are always in the foreground therefore running constant CPU cycles and will always be found under running processes. I just use shortcuts and when I press back out of them the process shuts down (highly rated well coded apps).

Oh and I am not referring to anyone as lazy in general terms just in regards their phone management. ;)

(Oh and in addition I'd be getting in touch with Gameloft regarding the AC game its badly ported. I'd also leave a low rating and a comment with the above.)

can't see calender in the list of items included as using the battery.

I am using the calender widget though. Bit pointless having a 'smart' phone if you can't use smart features!

Any apps really useful for detailed battery usage? The one i have (Battery Left) refers to the phones own system setting/usage.

Thing that pi**ed me off was going to watch Liverpool play 2 weeks ago and battery died by 9pm. That was after little usage and 3/4 pics all day.

I use Green Power and y5 to try to get better usage too!

cheers!

I feel like trying Juice defender. I usually get an entire day, 12 - 18 hours on medium usage. But would be great if I could extend that.

one thing I have noticed is WIFI sucks the battery about 50% more than 3g. I find this really odd as the signal is stronger locally on wifi than 3g!

Think I'll turn off wifi.

I've been playing with all sorts of settings I've learnt from reading through this forum. Some helped, some haven't.
I'm a heavy call user, and it's not uncommon to be diving for the car charger by about 4 in the afternoon after coming off the office charger around 6.30am
I went and bought a 'Gum Plus Power Pack' for things like watching movies during a flight, it's brilliant. Gives me enough for around 5 hours of movies:D

But I've just tried something that seems to split many here, conditioning the battery (?).

From another post I read here, charge the battery fully, then unplug, turn the phone off, charge for another hour, unplug and turn phone on for a few minutes (5?) then turn it back off and charge for another hour

I don't have any figures from usage, but I'm now getting to around 8.00pm and I've still got around 60% battery left after identical usage during the day

Over Easter I still had 30% charge left after four days of minimal usage

Had the DHD since early Feb, so it's had around 55-60 charges before I tried this

I know many here say it doesn't work, but the change in performance of my battery is now incredible

At the very least, it's worth trying. Damn glad I did

And thanks to everyone here for your tips, makes life for a dumb bloke with a smart phone just that bit easier ;)

As for people not agreeing with you on that, it is true that Li-Ion batteries have no memory like that. But your phones firmware does, which is why that works. Rooted users can just delete the phones battery stats, which is much easier.

what does deleting the battery stats do? is it like making it die at exactly 0%?

I PM'ed Xyro yesterday to ask him a little more info. As I have rooted but have no intention of changing my ROM, just the radio and using backup and screenshot facilities.

Evening Xyro,

Just want to quickly pick your brains having done a bit of hunting around regarding deleting battery stats. Thought of doing it myself but without changing ROMS thought it would be pointless. Will removing them and starting again really save me the hassle of throwing the conditioning route a bone?

Thanks mucker,

Stu

Hey Stu,

As I understand it yes, deleting battery stats and using the different charging techniques all achieve the same thing. Both techniques rely on charging the battery to full, past where the phone says 100% is, to the point at which the battery is no longer accepting charge.

You can use apps like Battery Monitor Widget that show if the battery is still accepting charge or not once you reach '100%' charged. I think it's inevitable that the battery is still accpeting some charge at that point, but wiping battery stats/conditioning should minimise it.

The first few points of this thread are where I read about it, although it was common practice with my previous HTC phone too.

Xyro

Save him having to type it. The XDA thread is also very good reading on the matter.

I have done all the things u said and more on my Desire.. My phone hasd not been plugged in for 41 hours and i still have 23% battery left. Its amazing it can last that long!!

Just a quickie to say that since I received my HTC Desire HD last week, and after reading through the many tips on this excellent forum, I have just managed to last 34 hours on one charge!!
Sounds sad I know, but when I received the phone and left things pretty much as they were, it only lasted about 6 hours! So by doing the following I have done myself a huge favour without stopping me using it the way I want.

1. Using a Static Wallpaper. (My own Union Jack pic)
2. Turned off Sync on all Apps. (Manually done now when needed)
3. Enable USB Debugging mode.
4. Installed Juice Defender.
5. Turned down the Brightness setting to about 1/4 of the way across. (was at 100% when I received the phone. Way too bright!)
6. Bluetooth and GPS are disabled. (When I need to use either, I toggle them on/off using a Widget on one of my screens. Wifi is always on.)

Quite happy now. I have also ordered a 1800 battery from ObiStore as a few people say they are worth it. We shall see! :-)

By the way. I tried to put a pic of my screen on here, (via Imageshack) but I can't seem to do it?

I have also done all this last night. Also turned off all the vibration alerts. I did have a task killer app but have also removed that. I took it off the charging dock at 1245 today and now at 1945 the battery is down to 78%. What a difference to yesterday where I was lucky to go 8 hours. I have also now just reviewed and increased all my e mail account send/receive timings. Juice Defender is set on the 'Balanced' profile and certainly appears to be doing its job.

Good stuff mate.
It certainly makes you appreciate your phone again! :)
I have actually now purchased the 'Juice Defender Ultimate' App now. Also, it is now turning off my WiFi when the phone goes into standby. When I take it out of standby to use it, only a few seconds pause and it re-connects me to my WiFi again. This seems to be making an even bigger difference. So I'm well chuffed.
I'm still waiting on my new battery from obostore. So when (if) I get that, I will do a test to see how long I can last on one charge with that with these same settings.

I've just done the boost trick on my handset so will see what difference it makes. Thinking putting JuiceDefender back on instead of Tasker

actually seems JuiceDefender free only does data and not WiFi so trying Green Power Free.

Charged overnight, removed power, turned off, charged for hour. Removed power, turned on, waited a couple of minutes, turned off and charged for another hour.

Dropped 1% already quite quickly

Has USB Debugging made any difference?

don't think so. Getting bored of all the tweaking to be honest lol

2% in 45mins. Looking at Battery useage it's telling me it's been unplugged 3h 6m 42s since unplugged. Guessing that's not taking into account the little boost. It would of been 3 hours since I first unplugged before doing the first switch off for the boost

To be fair 2% in 45 mins isn't really unreasonable if you've been messing about with it. I can imagine you're getting annoyed at the tweaking though.

One final thing to check, Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Wifi Settings -> Hit Menu -> Advanced.

Is best Wifi performance checked per chance? If so, turn that off. If I have that on, it can kill the battery in 10 or so hours.

Nope it's off. Well I fired up to sync emails and and run through my missions in World War and iMobsters that's about it really. Sat at home studying today so will leave alone as much as poss

Another 5% since then after a lil light browsing trying to find cinema deals. Tasked back on but greenpower still managing WiFi and tasked just detecting when connecting to home network to turn display down. In battery usage, should display be as high as 66%?

Yes, display will nearly always be the biggest drain. Mine is currently at 75%.

After 2 hours 14 mins off a charge, my battery is down to 84%, a couple of pics of my little boy, a bit of FB and some messing about with Widgetlocker so what you're experiencing is totally normal.

Did the same trick on my girlfriends Desire S yesterday and noticed that on hers, when you unplug, switch off and charge again, the orange light comes back on, although on mine it stayed green.

Not sure if I done something wrong on mine

Not sure about the Desire S, but on the DHD, Powering off with the button at the top doesn't actually turn it off, it puts it into a sort of standby mode. To turn it off completely, you need to take the battery out.
