Pâtes avec votre foie
I've been driving the Evo for well more than a year now and have been very satisfied with the phone, so much so that I decided to wait for LTE devices even though I had an upgrade in October (given to wife). I've flashed a number of roms, first settling on MikeG's rom, then moving to and staying on Synergy for a long time. A couple of months ago month I decided it was time to move on from the abandoned Synergy and went back to MikeG's (2.6x, then 3.0). Somewhere along the way, my battery life went sour. This phone was never known for long battery life, but previously I found it adequate. I have 3 batteries and rotate among them. I carry a spare in my bag in case and suddenly found myself using both many days and still barely getting home with a usable device. One day, I burned through a battery in ~1 hour making 2 short calls and one brief address search on line. Unacceptable to say the least. Though I couldn't put a firm time on it it seemed my battery woes started around the time of switching back to MikeG. I checked the mikmik forums but didn't find many battery life issues for the rom. When 3.0 came out, I updated with no improvement. The battery drain was inconsistent, sometimes fine other times ~1%/minute (!!!) with no use. Here's some of the futile things I did-
- re-flashed to older synergy
- restored synergy from nand backup
- flashed back to MikeG 3.0
- installed all apps fresh (not from Ti back up)
- tried to isolate culprit app by wasting huge time installing and checking one by one
- tried various kernels, finally Anthrax
All to no avail. It never occurred to me that the radio firmware could be the culprit. I had rolled back to pri 1.77 a while back (long before this issue started), was fine and left it alone. I don't even know which radio version I was on, but I had been on it for a long time without major issue. The recent security update had me looking around. Though I didn't see any immediate reason to update the rom, I did see some talk of the new radio striped from the update improving battery life and reception. I found this and gave it a try. What a difference, like night and day. I don't know if something changed in Sprints infrastructure that made my older radio firmware less efficient or if there was an issue with my install (bit rot?) but if you've been experiencing battery life issues lately you might want to give it a try! So far my experience with the new firmware has been purely positive, but as always YMMV.
Good luck!
