My Captivate came preinstalled with Froyo?

So I traded my iPhone 3gs via Craigslist for a Samsung Captivate. I noticed that it was a little quicker than the one I played with months ago. When I went into settings (About Phone), this is what it said:

Firmware version: 2.2
Build Number: FROYO.UCJI6

Not sure how it was installed since it's not out yet (rooting or something maybe?), but glad it's on here. Any Android tips in general?
 
Had to be because FroYo is *NOT* out in the U.S. on the Captivate. If it was you would know, this forum would FILL UP :)
 
it must be rooted if it says FROYO.UCJI6 for the AT&T phone. The upgrade isnt released yet. once it does, this forum would explode from all the traffic

Now you have a lot more customizing capabilities than with the iPhone (I'm sure you know ;)).

It still seems uncertain which Android OS version you have, though, and even if it's rooted or not.

Any terminal program from Market will help you find out by typing "su," without quotes, into the terminal text field. Do you see a "#" or a "$" or does it say, " permission denied," etc?
 
I tried some app called Terminal Emulator and I think there was a $ before the su I typed in, but then it said not found when I hit enter. I tried another and got another not found.
 
Install titanium backup launch it and see if you get root permission if not its not rooted, not to mention you don't need root to flash a rom with odin I have a JI6 on my pc right now, it may be the october leak which was a fairly stable rom.
 
It said it couldn't acquire root privileges, so I guess my Captivate isn't rooted. What does that mean exactly, regarding how mine has 2.2 installed?

Root is super user permission, you can access your whole file system and tweak it. This changes nothing for you at this point. Whoever you got that phone from flashed a JI6 rom on it, which is fine you would most likely at some point do this anyway. Its not a official but its a stable enough rom for day to day. Just reboot every couple of days as it has a memory leak which also is not a big deal. You can download a JI6 odin from xda, odin does not require root to flash which is why your phone is not rooted, only rom manager and other zip style roms need root.
 
Thanks for the info, guys. I liked the Captivate (the screen was amazing), but I ended up trading it for a like new 32gb iPhone 3GS. Apple isn't nearly as open as Android, but everything seems to work smoother and the multitouch is much better.
