Root My EVO Quadrant Standard Benchmark Test is HORRID...why??

scudder

Android Expert
Hi there...

I have a rooted EVO but NOTHING really modified on the phone...no custom ROM, no custom kernals or anything like that. Rooted to use Titanium and a few other "root-only" apps and functions but haven't done any fancy ROM flashing or anything like that. I current have a flashed zip that has modified the system font but that is it.

I ran a "full benchmark" test recently on my phone using Quadrant Standard and was NOT happy with the results...not even CLOSE to what the expected/average mark should be for my EVO 2.2. Here is my result:

U3Vvd.png

I was wondering if there is any "general" comments on what could be causing these problems. I mentioned that I am rooted but not really modified very much. I have a BUNCH of crap on the phone in terms of apps...only hovering around, say, 12% of my internal memory available. I have a bunch of apps on my SD card.

So I was wondering if my "full" internal memory for phone apps could cause the results I am getting...sorta like when your home computer is full. Or are there any other things I can look at to diagnose the slowness (other than eliminating apps and freeing up space)??

THANKS!!

1)Quandrant Standard is not a good measure of a phone's speed or capability
2)Yes certain apps or having a ton of apps will slow the phone down.
3)before I rooted I had what I considered a lot of apps and still was in the 1130-50 range. After rooting I think I'm at 1170, I stopped checking a while ago though.

Does the phone run slowly or lag at anything? If you actually have a problem I'd suggest downloading an app like watchdog or spare parts to see if any apps are using a large amount of cpu/memory or holding partial wakes.

Well a ridiculously low score might be an indication of a problem though I agree quad isn't a great measurements of speed. Also I'm not sure where those averages come from? From people who have run the standards on their phone? It could be skewed if that was the case. Anyhow, how low is it?

Sorry pic had not loaded yet, you are ok that doesn't really indicate you have an issue. Is your phone giving you any problems?

And I'm answering evomattnc's question as well...

Let me start out by saying that I realize that Quadrant isn't the best indicator of true speed. What I SHOULD have mentioned was that I was more concerned with the fact that my pre-root test (LONG time ago) was, if I recall, around the just-under 1100 level and now that I am rooted, the speed is worse, as shown. I was using the same Quadrant app to keep that test app constant to compare apples to apples.

Anyway, to answer the question regarding "problem" with my phone...how do I answer that??...YES I am and NO I am not!:D

I mentioned that I haven't really tweaked my phone with regard to custom ROMs or kernels...kept basic stock-but-rooted EVO. I HAVE tried to force-move some apps that were "phone only" and have gotten into some trouble :D Had a situation where my phone was NOT reading the card and would not mount the card to the computer!! Long story short, either had to revert back to a working nandroid backup (one time got lucky) and once had to wipe clean my .android_secure folder that was probably corrupted with whateverthehell I did with forcing apps. I was REALLY trying to be careful, moving apps that I thought shouldn't be necessarily "tied to installation on the phone" (which is DANGEROUS because I don't know quite what I'm doing...trial by error!!:D ). So I recovered from THOSE problems but I would say that those problems were MY fault.

I also have Overclock Widget but I have NOT set it to boost the CPU. I actually have it sent to UNDERclock or set as a minimum the CPU when the phone is sleeping/screen-off with the hopes of saving some battery during that phone state. I mention this because I first mentioned that I have "not tweaked" anything but this is a tweak, albeit an underclock.

Lastly, with regard to "problems" with my phone. I do find that I will randomly notice my ability to swipe between home screens, change between apps with the "back" button, exit screens, pull down the notification menu will sometimes be VERY slow, unresponsive for a while or kinda "stutter" in a way that is NOT smooth and definitely not the "normal" speed I usually see. It appears to come about random but often enough to be noticeable and annoying.

I have TRIED to troubleshoot and do some "investigation" with this last slowness/unresponsive issue and have found that the process "android.process.acore" that I believe is associated with my LauncherPro home screen app that I used, will be PEGGED at 100% for the processor use. I conjunction with the slowness/unresponsiveness during this situation, my battery will also drain VERY rapidly until I quit that acore process which, essentially, relaunches my LauncherPro app.

So, that's kinda it :( Sorry if none of this is specific enough for anyone trying to help to give suggestions. I would imagine there are MANY variables that could cause a problem. Like I said, I don't really care about the number for my Quadrant test as much as I am experiencing a LOWER number than my pre root.

One more thing...I said I had A TON of crap on my phone...here is the tally for the number of apps that I have installed (using App2SD Free to read the app list):

On SD Card 119
Phone Only 139

I mentioned that my available internal memory hovers around 11% ish. I HAVE received LOW MEMORY warnings trying to install certain programs which usually will happen around 10% or less. Though I might, at some times, have abut 45MB of memory left to install apps, the phone NEVER lets me install (and I get a warning) whenever I am around 45MB or less. I then jockey somestuff around and/or uninstall things I don't use very much.

THANKS for any suggestions anyone might have!!

Ok thats a shit ton of info lol. Well for starters a phone really isn't going to run day 300 as well as it did on day one. Low memory is a problem for how the phone runs if its that low it doesn't have the available space to do things it needs. Set on boot only applies to the main profile, if enabled is checked on the profile page then all of those profiles work if ttheir condition is met. Quad depends on what is running in the background. You have a ton of running services in the background now? I run quad 3 times...it sort of optimizes itself after it runs a few times...point is a ton of shit on your phone and stuff running in the background will eff up that score. Just clean some shit up. As far as quad averages I only ever run a quad when I have my cpu overclocked and set to performance :) might go to show why those averaged are where they are :)

Consider moving some things to the sd card...
My gf comes to me on occassion to tell me her phone is slow then I find she has 700 texts lol

Well, that's because I type fast..but NOW you can imagine how much shit I got on my phone

Followed and understand everything you mentioned except "set on boot"...?? I'm not sure what that refers to or where the setting is...haven't ever seen the "profile page" you're referring to...

Thanks again!

Lol yeah im usually typing this on my phone from the phandroid app so its short and I probably didn't say a lot ...anyhow in setcpu on the main page is your main profile. If no profiles are met then that is the profile that runs. The second tab has profiles you set up like your screen off profile. If you click the enable box on that tab then they will always work if their condition is met. The main profile on the main tab has a box that says set on boot. If you do this it will do just that. If not you have to go set it though the other profiles if enabled will still work...

ARE you my boyfriend??:D Kidding...I actually don't have THAT type of crap. It is mostly apps.

Well, I've moved everything to the SD card that is "allowed" to be moved. I mentioned before though that my force-move of apps not necessarily "allowed" seems to have caused me problems. I mentioned I tried to be careful/discerning with what I force-moved to the card but my doing so is the ONLY thing I have been able to trace to my not-reading-the-SD card issue.

I recently read through a thread about an App 2 SD option that is "better" than the force move I've been doing but it requires a custom ROM that will permit "moving more of the app" and the dalvik cache to the SD card:

http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/220627-faq-apps2sd-updated-19-03-11-a.html

I'd prefer not to go the custom ROM route at the moment and rather clean out my phone with crap I'm not really using. THAT BEING SAID, in suggesting as you did to "move more to the SD card" were you suggesting to continue to FORCE-MOVE apps not "allowed" by the devs onto the card? If so, have you had any problems or heard of any problems like I am having to suggest that moving apps to the card might cause the card NOT to be read/mounted by the phone??

I can give you more specifics about my card not mounting problem (though this is going a bit off topic, it is a recurring issue that I run into) but your head my explode when you read and since I am NOT your girlfriend you should NOT feel obligated to devote so much time to my problems :D

THANKS!

Well it depends on the app. Some can be forced ok and some cannot. Widgets don't functional well if forced for example. It can certainly cause issues but im not sure about the mounting error I have seen that on custom roms and a reboot usually fixes it. There are more than one method to moves apps to the sd card. One is using apps2sd, when you select move to sd card in app manager thats the built in froyo apps2sd. It moves a part of the app to the sd card and then retains another part of it on the internal still so it can access and run the file. So the whole app doesn't actually move. Most apps are ok with this except widgets and others you'll just have to test it.

The other is with a2sd by dark tremor for example. This method Is MUCH better and moves the entire app to the sd card. The app can still run because even though the system is looking in data/app or system/app a2sd creates a symlink so that the system can still look there and find the app even though it isn't there at all. You would need a class 6 card or higher and to partition it but it is far superior and will give you tons of room on your phone...out of 512 I usually have 410 open ...

How are you moving them? App manager, titanium back up?

Apologies on the overclock response I missed the overclock widget part. Overclock widget has an option for screen on and screen off or to have them the same. You have checked used different for screen off? And while the screen is on you have it set from 245 to 998? Screen off should be like 245-245.

I had some time so I went back and read your novel again. Yes having your cpu tacked because it is running a lot of apps and running out of memory will rapidly kill your battery. If you really need all the apps on your phone my suggestion to you is to get a 16 gig class 6 card or better and run dark tremors a2sd you it will solve your memory issues and likely the speed issue because you gave the system space to work.

are you telling me that if i delete old texts (or move em to the sd card) that speeds my phone up?

Well it depends doofus. How many texts are you holding onto, and furthermore why lol? My gfs phone cant handle 700 texts but the evo wont mind 700 so much, i had up t0 1400 one time then i started just letting them go. How much room do you have on your memory? This person has a serious lack of memory and moving/deleting texts would certainly help them.

Having said all that...it certainly wont hurt your phone to keep it clean...where is the OCD? :D

My wife's Evo had almost 2000 texts just from me(she NEVER deleted them) and it didn't seem to slow her's down at all. I change roms too much so there are never that many on my phone :)

LMAO!!! well, my ocd is kicking in with the "what if i need to refer back to an old message" combine that with lazy, and BOOM!! there ya go lol oh, and i dunno how many texts i have in there... i suppose i could look when it slows down here, or when im at lunch :)

I figure the same thing I tell my kids about toys.....if you haven't used it in 6 months, get rid of it :)

Yeah the evo is a diff beast than my gfs samsung but if you are low on available memory your phone will NOT be happy and cleaning those up is a good place to start...

oh wait, i did do a sms backup the other day, and it said that it had backed up like 8300 and some change.... so, i dunno man. i guess as long as it doesnt effect the performance its a moot point (for now LoL)

LOL 8300 thats borderline absurd, you sure you arent also a hoarder? lol

nah, just never go thru my old texts... i guess i know what im doin tonight lol there really is only 1 person that i want to save texts from due to an extenuating circumstance, but beyond that, they can all go away lol its happened before, and i lived :)

put your phone in the freezer for about 30 seconds then run it again. i bet your score goes up.

heat and dust are cancer for electronics... well, that and water, and physical abuse and uhhhh other stuff lol
