My experience after the Captivate

Switched to Sprint and sold the Captivate. Interesting story: I wanted the LG Optimus S, but they didn't have it at the store. The guy gave me a used Samsung Transform (800 MHz) with 2.1 Android just until the Optimus becomes available.

The Samsung phone is laggy as hell, and its GPS is absolute crap. It's not as bad as the Captivate, but not very good either. And its owners have been waiting for Froyo forever. They were promised an upgrade in November, then December, etc. Pretty much the same experience I had with the Captivate.

Then I got the Optimus. It's a 600 MHz CPU (so it's less than the Transform), but it's very fast and has almost no lag. Its GPS is flawless and locks quickly and is very accurate. It's got 2.2 already.

I don't think I will ever get a Samsung phone again.
 
I didnt get the bad gps on my cap. Is it that much of an issue to really complain about it? I mean yea you pay for something and expect everything to work but i guess its not a big deal to me since i have a seperate gps navigation system. I never find myself anytime during the day wondering where im at.

Well, no. I can also live without a browser and an email client in my pocket. Really I could get a MetroPCS free phone and pay a mere $40 a month for unlimited calls and texts. You're absolutely right.

But I wasn't paying at&t over a hundred bucks for the bare essentials. I was paying for a high end phone with cool features, and I expected them to deliver. They did not.

Imagine me buying a luxury car with non-functioning heated seats. Really are they that important? Should we whine and complain about them?

Yes. It's a huge deal.
You pay for a feature, you expect it to work. They advertise the mother effing features.
Would you pay $5 for a toaster that didn't actually toast bread? I mean, it will heat the bread. It has coils inside that glow red.
Heck no you wouldn't!
And most people are paying $100 or more for this thing.
 
Okay i understand that but i dont fall under the category of bad GPS. So just wait for 2.2. (Yes i know its been crazy with the 2.2 hype but im sure it will be released soon) All in all the phone is amazing. Best phone i have ever had. I just dont get all worked up about one thing that doesnt work right. The bad gps people are reporting doesnt break the phone and again i understand that you should get what is advertised. But to me the phone is so amazing that one thing that is bad will not make me badmouth samsung or at&t. My 2 cents. Love my cap only thing done to it is root and it runs great.

Since you don't use the GPS, trade me phones, because my GPS works when it feels like it. It sounds like you would be happy with any product that works like that or you work for Samsung...

lol work for samsung... people here are great. Anyways i will not trade phones because everything works just fine on my captivate. If your gps is efffed up load a custom rom that fixes it or something. geez.
 
No matter how many little lag or GPS quirks the LG Optimus S fixes that the Captivate doesn't, it still has a 3.2 inch, generic looking screen...... That's an automatic no thank you.
I'll keep sAMOLED. LG's not a cheaper phone either. My Captivate was $49.99 too.
 
the optimus S is a cute lil device...
i couldn't go down to it...not because of the screen quality(i went from Super amoled to tft on my hd7)

but because the size is so small
but it reminds me of my droid eris i used to have
 
A friend has a optimus s and there is no way I would think about going down to it, we have put them side to side and its horrendous. Plus there is a ton of apps his will not run that the cappy funs just fine (mostly games). Say what you want, but the cappy is highly modifiable and super fast. The optimus is a good little phone, but in no way compares to the captivate. If all you wanted was a gps, maybe the cap is not for you, but maybe a tom tom is.
 
I think everyone missed the point (therefore I must have said it wrong lol).

I never said I left the Captivate because of its GPS or because the Optimus is better.

I said that HAVING left the Captivate, here's my experience... Etc.

The LG Optimus is not in the same category as the Captivate, the Evo is. I was just noting how other phones don't seem to have the stupid problems that plague the Captivate.
 
captivates and wp7 focuses are selling for about the same price on ebay, I would lose maybe $25-$75. Or even if I buy a brand new focus for $400, I could still get a focus and only lose $100. I do like android and my captivate, but the lag on top of the gps issues, on top of the force close issues, and on top of the long wait for froyo, this is getting too annoying. Maybe I would consider a different android phone if I were on verizon, but the captivate is the only android superphone on at&t and I'm already locked into my 2 year contract. At&t actually has the best selection of wp7 devices of the big 4 carriers.

Why am I hesitating? Two things...Free turn by turn navigation, and also I have about $40 worth of android market apps I would be leaving behind. Also, I would want to do more research to see if the gps chip in the samsung focus is any good. Another good thing about the focus is that it takes microsd chips unlike the other wp7 devices.

I have already found out that there is no lag with the focus at all. Those wp7 devices are all lightning fast and boy do they look good with the samoled display.
 
I have a friend that has a Samsung Focus (WP7), he's happy with it. Although the concept of WP7 is great, it needs a bit more work before I would consider buying one. To the OP, don't try to explain yourself, I went through the same thing when I dumped my Captivate for an iPhone4. Not that I wanted to do this, I got tired of the Froyo promises, GPS problems and the lag.

I think the Atrix will send Samsung packing when it comes out for AT&T, Motorola is on top of updates and the docking capabilities of the phone look interesting. Samsung is a disaster, I should have listened to the warnings and would of been enjoying an Evo today. Instead, the only way out of the Captivate was the iPhone4 which has been a good phone and one I don't have any issues with. At least I can say that I didn't lose $200.

Doesn't matter how cheap the plan is, if you don't have reception.

That's the main reason I could never go with Sprint. Doesn't matter if they had a $10/mo unlimited everything plan if there's only 2 places in the state I can get a signal.
 
I agree. The other thing to be careful with when it comes to Sprint and Verizon is the roaming fees. Once you leave your state, it could end up costing you dearly. At least it used to be like that in the past, don't know if the latest plans are now nationwide.

You also can't beat AT&T if you happen to travel internationally, their phones work just about anywhere in the world. That's another reason I kind of like them, comes in handy when taking trips.
 
I never leave the country and rarely leave the state, and at&t's "superior" 3G is slow and their voice signal causes low quality calls and enough disconnections you'd think I'm on the Sprint network! So I decided to switch to the Sprint network and save a ton.

Lol i think android fanatics will say the reason why there is no lag, is because technically there is no multi-tasking ha

I can't wait for Verizon to get there HTC Pro 7
 
I finally gave in and flashed the new cognition rom. I love it. Even when froyo does officially come out, I will probably stay with cognition until the rom is updated. I'll probably never stay on a stock rom again. I can honestly say I like having my captivate now.
