Root My feelings

I'm on dx GB rooted .596. I tried other roms, some of which were 2nd init.

My feeling is that whereas I am grateful that we are able to have different roms, thanks to second init, the fact that you lose some video functionality points out the glaring fact that we are still struggling to get around an encrypted bootloader, thanks to Motorola.

Perhaps I am expressing negativity, but I have to say that because of their unfulfilled promises, I will never purchase another Motorola phone for myself again. Never.

On the other hand, I have been and continue to enjoy relationships with my Android Forum dx rooting buddies. It makes the frustration palatable for me.

Are you starting to ask for directions when driving too? :D
Rule #1: Guys aren't supposed to discuss their feelings.
Rule #2: If in doubt, see Rule #1.
I haven't yet tried a 2init rom, but suspect I will soon, primarily because Apex seems to be a dead end and nice roms are coming out. CM7 is fantastic on my Nook Color and I love it. CM7 or OMFGB look good for my X. Think I'll pass with MIUI tho.

I just need phone (!), camera (pics only) and email.

I've only used GB rooted so far so am falling behind.

having a phone that works should be the selling point for you stevey, not every phone will be perfect, i myself will never get another motorola phone until they change their stance on it, and i mean very soon

The functionality you're seeking has nothing to do with an encrypted bootloader. Most of the CM7 builds still do not include 720p video, including builds for unlocked phones like the Incredible.

I don't agree with Motorola's decision to lock the bootloader, but honestly, with 2nd-init ROMs, there is VERY little functionality that we can't have. Custom kernels are the only missing part of the equation (well, that and our recovery isn't a "true" recovery).

I agree with your frustration, just wanted to gently point out that some of the cause of your frustration doesn't have anything to do with a locked bootloader. You've been unhappy with the missing features in some of the released ROMs. That's totally valid, but they are simply missing features in the ROMs that the developers haven't found solutions for, not bootloader-related.

Agreed, but I am cherishing a bit of bitterness toward Motorola

I am between a rock and hard place on this one. While I think it sucks that Motorola has the encrypted bootloaded I also think that Motorola builds the best piece of hardware (phones) out there. I have had HTC and Samsungs before and none of them hold up like my Motorola phones. My wife has a D2G because she "had" to have a keyboard, however she has dropped it and done everything where I have been worried that it will not turn on and it does everytime. There are scratches on the casing, but the phone still works like it just came out of the box and the screen looks perfect. My X still looks like it came out of the box yesterday after a year. I have never had another phone that looks as good a year later as my X.

So while I hate the bootloader, that developers have done a decent job working around and made the phone better. I have a hard time giving up the quality.

The reason I tend to stay with Motorola devices is the radios/antenna. There is simply no other manufacturer that comes close to Motorola in that area. HTC is so so and Samsung is just terrible. With Motorola devices I always seem to have great signal even in areas that are known dead zones. For that reason alone I will always consider Motorola devices before others. If Motorolas supposed new stance on bootloaders comes to fruition then it will be icing on the cake. Hopefully the fact that the Atrix can be unlocked is a sign of things to come.

I agree with many of the points on Moto's build quality and radio superiority. However, if the Bionic is not unlockable on release, I'll buy another option. The partial freedom we've got from 2nd init reinforces just how locked up the DX was before.

720p recording, playback will be fixed; Team Douche is already moving on it. But a locked bootloader is not.

Edit: You can only SBF so many times a day...

The only reason that statement is true is the fact that it isn't instantaneous, otherwise, you could do unlimited SBFs every day....lol
Isn't that part of the fun of having a phone?

Lol. Not at all.
Have a idea to fix something, and replace a file => SBF.
Modify some xml files => SBF.

Not only that, you gotta root (z4root never works unless I reboot). Then reinstall whatever Rom you're working on...

I'm feelin ya, bro (oops...) I also have to reboot at least once when using Z4, just to get it to run. Spent most of my day yesterday playing that same scenario out (just didn't want to play nice for me).

i have to say i'm sticking with Moto. I could really care less of a locked bootloader. Look at how much the Devs have achieved with the DX. Remember when this phone was about to release how all of the hype was "ohhhh the DX will never be rooted"....blah blah blah.

I would much rather have build quality than sacrifice that to have an unlocked bootloader.

I see a lot of you saying your done with Moto because of this. That is fine and all but what are your options? I mean if your wanting to stay with VZW then your options are limited. I know some (aka Steven) are thinking the HTC Vigor...but we have no solid specs on that thing what so ever. I don't think moving to a different carrier just so you can get an open phone is a very good decision at all either.

anyways that is my 2 cents...

I will always look for the best phone. I'm not sticking with Moto for any brand loyalty, and I'd be lying if I said an unlocked bootloader wasn't a selling point for me when I'm comparing phones.

If the Bionic has the best radios/build quality/sound quality/etc., though, I'm not going to sacrifice the overall quality of the phone itself just so that I can get a little more tweaking out of it.

It looks like the SGSII is a nice phone, and I will seriously consider it when the time comes - but like I said, any serious deficiency in it and the unlocked bootloader is a moot point.

What's the point of an unlocked bootloader for a nondeveloper or nonthemer? I have an unlocked X but I still need to sbf to go from different based roms. Or am I wrong. Is there some magic to the unlocked bootloader that saves sbfing? Obviously its important for development. But why for the average consumer ?

By the way Indrid HTC sucks. It literally sucks battery down big-time for two reasons. 1 sense ui and 2 lousy antenna reception. I mean real lousy. I've had the old touch diamond and incredible. Believe me, you could be on the best battery saving rom and feel like you were on a 2 unit battery sucking rom with an HTC phone.

I have many of the same feelings Steven has. I loved the old ApeX builds and enjoyed 2.0 as well but rooted/deodexed .596 seems the most usable to me. I tried CM7 for several weeks and while I love all of the little details here and there, the video issues and the fact that my BT wouldn't connect properly with my Xoom or at all with my car anymore had me going right back to .596 this morning. I debated trying SS 2.0 but figured I'd be in the same boat that I was with CM7. I've seen nothing out of Fab lately (even on Twitter) which has me feeling that ApeX on the X is a thing of the past. He seems to have moved on to greener pastures (talking about his Nexus S and HTC Sensation...not the X). I have heard good things about the Sensation's battery life though which has my interest drawn towards the Vigor...only time will tell. Since I'm of the opinion that VZW's SGSII will not have LTE, I'm keeping close watch on the Vigor and even the Bionic.

I am, however extremely grateful for our community and the great strides they've made with this phone...locked down or not. Keep it up, guys.

i have still debated on whether or not i will hold off on my upgrade or do it now, im eager to learn of the bionic, and how it is, whether or not it is in fact encrypted, it seems to be the phone of choice coming up here, something about the bionic is calling people. Once we learn of the encryption im sure it will be a distant memory much like the X2.

However i am hoping motorola will in fact deploy a website that will unlock the droid bionic/x it will change my mind on motorola all together if that were to happen

I'm going to ride this train for at least 9 months. No upgrade until then. Not sure I would buy another phone until then anyway. Just not seeing anything that would make me want to switch. The bootloader issue is annoying but, the dev community for the X is phenomenal. I've been playing with other folks phones lately and learning about the different processes that make these phones work. There is nothing special about anything out right now. Think I am bored again and am going to stop typing because you are all bored now. Lol

well i have never really messed with an HTC or a Samsung or LG, i have messed with moto phones and am very comfortable doing what needs to be done. with others it would take time to learn and get used to.

Missed this earlier.

An unlocked bootloader would allow us to overwrite the recovery partition of the phone. That means we can take Motorola's stock recovery (which will only load signed .zip files), and overwrite it with Clockwork Recovery (which will load anything we want it to).

Right now, you basically have to have an intact, booting phone in order to access Clockwork Recovery - because we're hijacking the boot process partway through and then booting into recovery. This kinda defeats the point of a recovery partition - a recovery partition is supposed to be totally separate from the boot partition, in order to allow you to recover the phone when it's corrupted.

Other Android users, with unlocked bootloaders, can boot straight into Clockwork Recovery from an unpowered phone. yawdapaah's complaint is that every time he does something that screws up his phone, he has to SBF, regain root, and install the bootstrapper before he can get back into a recovery mode that will let him flash his backup. On, say, a Nexus, screwing up your phone just means booting straight into Clockwork Recovery and re-loading your last backup.
