My How-to For a Very fast Esteem

First off I just wanted to say that this isn't a thread that points you to a certain app that makes your phone instantly better. I have always searched the forums for user recommendations for apps to make your phone better but I never really tested it to see if it made a difference.

I noticed a huge improvement over any apps that I have downloaded and that includes esteem optimizer. I did this to keep all the apps that I want but dont use all the time to stop them from running in the background.

This method worked for me and I'm not promising anything. You will need these two apps to get everything working all free)
-setcpu
-titanium backup

Open up titanium backup
-go to the backup/restore tab
-hit the "menu"(bottom left soft button on phone)
-go to the filters section
-at the bottom of filters hit create label
-make a name for it and then go to add/remove elements
-select all the apps like games, camera apps, and all other junk you can live with out(for me I selected everything except for wifi tether
internet browser, my launcher app, and of course, DONT SELECT YOUR SYSTEM APPS)
-once your done hit "OK" then hit "save"

make another label and name it different
-select all the apps that you just chose and save it just like you did above
This is to make a widget so you can just hit one button and it will freeze them all at once
1. hit and hold down on any screen you want the button on
2. go to widget and then titanium backup(actions)
3. go to freeze all and system apps
4. then go to filter by label then hit the filter that you just made
5. then hit create the widget
Now we make a button widget to unfreeze all of them when ever you want to use those apps
- do everything up to step 2
- go to action and then hit defrost all user and system apps
- go to filter like you did above except use the second filter
- then hit create
This is what it should look like when you done:

This is a unfreeze button I made just for my games because I know some of them run in the background but I do play them quite a bit:

There ya go, now you have two widgets to make sure you dont have any apps running that you dont want running. Just a side note if you have any apps that you run pretty often that you want to use quickly, you can make a unfrost widget just for that app like this:

Now we use the other app called setcpu(just so you know this will most likely eat up your battery faster because it will be set on the highest speed)
-go to scaling and hit performance
-go to the two sliders and move both of them all the way to the right(it should be 1024)
-exit and now your done

Have fun and I hope this works for someone as much as it did for me. I know there are easier ways to get this done but this method worked for me.

?? When i hit freeze it says frost aborted is that what its spouse to say thank you for ur help

no, when you hit the freeze widget it should show you that its freezing in the status bar and when its finished you should see another notification in the status bar that says batch defrost finished

Yes i an rooted and it said frost aborted and it does say defrost complete. When i see if the apps are still running they are please help i did the steps one by one thanks fire your help

Good tip about titanium widget.. I already debloated but made one for facebook and phandroid since i use them but they eat memory like no tomorrow.. One thing however, unless you just want it for labeling purposes, no need to make dupe labels.. Can use the same label, just create two widgets..

thanks for this, I actually already knew this but by the time that I was writing this, I was too tired to go all the way back. I did it so I didn't get them all mixed up.

While I also use titanium -for backup purposes- I have found that Gemini app Manager is ideal for preventing those apps from running whenever they want(autorun config). Almost all of my apps are not allowed to run on boot which makes this phone very responsive.

I have been playing with Gemini for the past week and now I have several things that autoran at startup as well a during the use of the phone, set to OFF and it has worked wonders! No more Maps and no more Voice Search running at startup, plus some others! Its a nice addition to my app collection

Does gemini keep them from auto-running after boot. Seems what your saying is it stops upon boot but will it truely keep the apps from auto starting? (processes that is)

And what about after opening an app is opened and then you close it/shutdown. does it keep it from auto-running as well?

You could stop one app from starting on boot but after a while it will run anyway. I recommend using Fast Boot to stop apps when you need it.

I had some problem with fast boot with not shutting down the apps all the time. It was one of the better apps that I used though.

No more than what you listed to do with setcpu, you're not gaining anything from it as 1024Mhz (1Ghz) is the max speed stock by default.

Now you can setup profiles so the max/min cpu speed is set lower when the screen is off etc that will help with battery 'some'.

I already have a profile that does that :) I just simply made this thread to make your phone perform quickly when you wanted it too. So, there aren't any apps out there that will lower your cpu frequency?

About the profile thing though, I do lower it as low as possible when I charge my phone up to my laptop since it takes for e v e r...

I now what your doing for our community, but I made this thread for everyone that needs it until you guys hopefully come out with a new stable ROM

Guys i have been trying out memory booster. So far is killing most of my listed apps when the RAM goes to 36%. You might want to try that.

Thanks for the heads up. I tried that one too and it seemed like I was getting mixed results with how much RAM I was actually saving

yea setcpu should be able to lower the cpu speed, tho I didnt try it on the stock kernel. Soon as we get CWM working correctly you all will have a oc'd kernel and ROMs will sure to follow that. ;)

I wasnt or didnt mean to sound as if I was talking down what ya posted, just pointing out what you had said on setcpu wasnt really gaining anything lol. Tho Android does purdy good about lowering the cpu speed itself when the phone goes to sleep, screen off etc, but can be optimized with custom profiles etc too. The governors I added to the kernel will help too. Its been running rock solid for me @1.7Ghz.

It takes forever charging from your laptop because USB charging doesn't put out that many mAmps.

If you want a fast charge. Turn the phone off. Don't use the phone while it's charging if it's on. OR get a charger that is 1000 mahamps +

:)

+1.. think of USB as a trickle charge :) there is a wall charger i use at work sometimes that is a cheap generic one.. went from 80% to low 90's in an hour and a half whereas the stock one went from 40 to mid 90's in an hour (or something like that.. forgot to charge it last night.. woke up and was like woops.. forgot to set the alarm too hehe.. ) Otherwise i use the EVO charger in the front of the store..
I already knew what was going on. With that setCPU app you can lower the cpu freq cap and it charges way better without having to turn it off. I just have a problem with losing things like phones, wallets, and especially phone chargers lol

Newbie here looking over clock my LG Esteem, I'm using a MacBookPro. Is there an Issue using this platform or can the mods to handheld be done on handheld alone?
