Root My new EVO failed to root. S-OFF but not rooted....

Dreamliner

Android Enthusiast
I got my replacement EVO and ran unrevoked...It came back with: "Failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"

In the bootloader, it says S-OFF but the recovery option just takes me to the <!> logo.

I read an app might cause that error, so I erased everything on the phone and ran root again. Same error, same problem.

I can't run the unrevoked S-ON because the recovery wont let me flash a zip.

What do I do?

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Since you have S OFF, all you need to do is flash the PC36IMG file of the recovery you choose.
Amon 2.3, recommended <--- Click to download
or Clockwork 2.6 <--- Click to download

Then, make sure it is named PC36IMG.zip
(make sure the extension is not hidden, or you could have PC36IMG.zip.zip and it wont work)

Then, put that on your SDcard. Not in any folders, just place it on top.
Boot into hboot.
(Volume Down + Power, and hold until you see the white screen)
Give in a couple seconds, and it will load the PC36IMG file, the it will say
RECOVERY
Volume up to update
Volume down to cancel

Press Volume up, and let it do its thing.
Then Press volume down to reboot device and

That is all unrevoked does, is give you S OFF then give you a custom recovery.
It did half of its job, so you are just finishing the other half.

It is important that you go ahead and reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup (instructions are in the Rooting Guide) before you make any changes. That way you can always come back in case anything gets messed up from here on out.

So you just cant get to recovery? Sounds like you lost recovery. Some people run unrevoked several times and it works, I suggest going here and grabbing the PC36IMG file for whatever recovery you want, I suggest Amon Ra 2.3. Dl it, rename it EXACTLY PC36IMG.zip, watch out for hidden extensions so as not to make .zip.zip. Follow the instructions in the thread it wont steer you wrong. Go to hboot, it'll automatically find your new pc36img file and ask if you want to flash it, say yes, and bam you have a recovery.

If you actually want to run S-on you would grab the corresponding PC36IMG.zip and put it on the root of the sd card but i dont see the point.

Edit: surf beat me

They are both pretty good now.
They both back up wimax, and the new version of clockwork seems to wipe the phone better than previous versions.
Its personal preference. Amon has a better track record.

Try them both and see what you like.
Just remember, if you make a backup in one, it will not work in the other. So, pick one and plan on keeping it :)

No preblem mattnc, we are all here to help each other :)

Well, I downloaded Amon and named it PC36IMG.zip (not zip.zip) and it just says 'no image wrong image' in recovery.

...I just tried clockwork and it doesn't work either...

if you grab cw grab 2.6.0.1, its the only version of cw that supports both script types. I know you told him to grab 2.6 just wanted that to be abundantly clear.

I like RA because i can choose what to back up and there by making my backup just a little smaller, i have a good wimax back up but usually just go with the 3 defaults. CW assumes you want everything.

try naming it PC36IMG I cant really imagine anything wrong with that download i used it last week. Are you 100 percent sure that your windows doesnt hide the file extension? Did you place it on the root of the sd card?

Yes, good points..
it could be hidden so thy and name it only PC36IMG
If its a zip, im sure the extension will be there. ..
Then again, i havent touched a windows computer in a few years :o

Yay! I figured it out. My EVO went full ****** and for some reason wasn't able to read the sdcard.

For whatever reason, I could transfer data to it from my computer through the phone, but the bootloader wasn't reading the card.

I swapped sdcard, all is well....for now.

;)

quick question on Amon, there are tons of options for the backup...when I do backups, what should I be saving? Data, cache, wimax...etc...what do you suggest?

I usually do all of them except for the last two, (android secure and ext i think...)
You could just do all up to and including wimax.
But as long as you have ONE with wimax, and you save it, youll be good with the default options.
But doing each one up to wimax wont hurt, just a couple extra mb of space

Hello.

I am having the exact same problem. Only thing is im a bit of a rookie and dont know what you mean by flashing the PC36 file. Can you assist me as well?

Go to the rooting for dummies guide and check the troubleshooting section it has a problem where it give you a missing CID error but it is the same fix as the problem you are having. I would recommend using Amon_RA as your recovery.

welcome to the forum!

so the PC36IMG.zip is a file that is mainly used to install recovery. when you go to hboot (power off then press and hold power+vol down) it will automatically scan for the file. if there is no file, it will say PC36IMG.zip not found and show you a list of options. so all you have to do is move the file onto the root of the sd card and goto hboot. it will scan it automatically provided that you name it correctly. it needs to be PC36IMG exactly (if you have windows, don't type ".zip" at the end of PC36IMG because windows hides extensions). now you have a new recovery.

anymore questions please ask away.

having same problem and i did all of the above. for both amon and clockwork and neither worked. any other suggestions....? and yes i did em right

it said s-off but i was able to get it back into recovery and run unrevokedson.zip and it fixed it. thanks for replying quickly though!

No problem. So what state is your phone in now? What were you trying to do? If you now have either RA or CW, but S-ON, you're not fully back to stock. You may have unrooted, but you'd still have a custom recovery in that case.

yea first it was s-off but not root and i couldnt get into any recovery at all i got the <!> symbol when i entered into recoevery and so im back to stock and im gonna try to root once more today hopefully without any complications!

Ah got it, if you had s-off we could have taken a different course to fix the issue but OK, good luck and let us know if you need help.

Okay. Just for future reference, you could have just flashed either CW or RA, left S-OFF, then either rooted your stock ROM with z4root or flashed a custom/stock rooted ROM. If you get stuck in the same situation again, let me know, and I'll guide you through it.
