my new project-Aquarium keeping

KGtropical had a doa policy.......I emailed John and let him know the situation........I do not think it is there fault as it might be mine.

My local fish shop always tells me never to do a water change/clean the tank/filters etc before putting new fish in (or for up to 5 days after).

Maybe that's it?

This is it. I've had tanks over 40 years now, one of the first things I learned was to never introduce new fish to a just set up tank. You need to cycle your tank at least a month before adding fish, it's a rule that should never be broken(yes do it that long, fish stores just want to sell you more fish so they shorten that ;) ). You have some hardy fish there(AC's can live in mud, lol), so they may well survive this, but remember this for the next time.
Oh, and adding "cycle chemicals" really truly doesn't help with cycling, patience is the only way to go. Nice set up, btw, it looks great!

That is because of the removal of beneficial bacteria, but with zero ammonia and nitrites, this is not the case.

Fish are doing fine now after the water change.

Just bummed about my bucco.

Tank had been cycled already......water parameters are fine.........not really sure what it was, but the water change helped.

It was probably just as you said, some residue on the new stuff going into the tank. I tend to wait some time(at least a day) after a major tank upheaval before adding my fish back into it, just in case. You changed a lot out in your tank yesterday, that will through any tank out of whack for awhile. As long as all is fine for the next few days, your fish will be fine :)

Maybe it was the travel shock and new tank shock . but I think he may take a return from you knowing that the other guys are good

Yeah things should be back in order.

This is the email I got back:
Hey ocnbrze,
Sorry about the delay. We do usually only guarantee live delivery since we have no control over the conditions or water parameters of peoples tanks but we'll certainly take care of you on your next order. We don't like to leave people hanging. I'm really sorry that happened, I guess the trip was just to much for them:-(

These guys are great........he even called me so.......

I'll probably wait til I get my giant tank in before I order more. I will most likely weed out the random africans before adding more.

My lfs gave me a quote of $950 for the tank, stand, and canopy which is a really good deal.......saving up now for it;)

I'm thinking about running a fluval fx6 for filtration and I'm looking for some LED's as well.

Plan is to have a 180g setup by the end of April:)

ok so now that i know what i need to save for the tank, stand, and canopy, i need to start looking into filtration, heater, and rock.

i think i'm going to start with a fluval fx6. i read in a few forums, that they recommend running two. i think that is a bit much at least for me right now.....maybe once my fish get bigger and i add more fish(i do plan on removing 5 as they are just not what i want in my tank now.), then i will probably get another one......one thing though is that you can never over filter a tank.

i have two 250 watt ebo jager heaters that should work. i do not think i need one with a higher wattage.

with the rock i might go with more of what i have now......or i might want to go with either holy rock from universal rock or a 3d background from them as well:

holy rock:

3d background:

here is the website if you are interested:
3D Backgrounds | Aquarium, Reptile & Pet Products | Universal Rocks

pretty cool looking and it is light weight.

i'm definitely going to paint the back black for sure.

any ways these are just some thoughts i need to think about.

Nice selection of rock...but a bit expensive. I just look for lava rock at local stores(I'm in NYC, I've got quite a few to choose from). Nothing beats going through all of their offerings and putting together in my head how it's going to look after I'm done. To me thats half the fun of setting up a tank :) As for running two filters, try combining your soon to be leaking(I kid, I kid)canister with a quality standard filter, like an Aquaclear. For AC's they really are more than enough all by themselves. Two 500 series will work just fine for your sized tank, and you get to pick and choose what media to put in it, the list is almost endless. Up to you.

I have had fluval's all my life.......I think they are very good canister filters......I'm spending a good hunk of change on this tank and I do not want to cut corners in using a hob filter like aquaclear. I hate power filters like those as they are ugly and never properly filter a tank in my opinion......sure they are way cheaper then canister filters.

The fx6 is a powerful filter that is rated up to 400g tank according to fluval.......so I should be fine for now. Plus they are easy to clean and as long as you maintain and check the o-ring you should never have leaks.

But as I get more expensive cichlids I will most likely need another on to properly filter the tank as some of my fish will get huge!!!!

Well, everyone has their own way of doing things with filtration. But it is a mistake to think that HOB filters are any worse than canisters. I've used both for decades (eheim was my choice) and find a good quality HOB does every bit as good a job cost not withstanding. Its wrong to think just because you pay more for something it makes it better ;-) Anyway your setup looks good so far, here's hoping for the best :-)

I used a lot of hob filters only things I hate about them is the fish finds their way into the filter pit . the other things are the white powder that forms at the top of the housing and the sound of falling water if levels get to low . I never tried the canister . but I have had many under gravel filters. I think I have to try out canister filters . it looks as if it makes drainage a easy step.

Do not get me wrong I think that hob are ok.......just not what I would like to see on a tank......I think you get more surface area for biological filtration in a canister or sump tank then you do with an hob.

The other thing is that I want the tank to be as flush against the wall as possible. you can't do that with an hob(space coming out from the wall will be sort of tight)......which is another reason why I do not like them for my tank.

so this guy:

beat up and killed this guy:

it all started last night and progressed this morning. i was hoping a good nights rest and the dispute would be over, but i guess not:( i was going to isolate the borleyi and let the albino peacock recuperate and regain control of the tank. those two pretty much dominated the tank......though the albino was way more peaceful then the borleyi.......he is the alpha male of the tank....especially now.

it is just weird how quickly the tank dynamics can turn on you. they were peaceful and if anything the albino showed more dominance over the borleyi. i have noticed that the borleyi was trying to mate with a few of the peacocks i have even though they are different species. i thought the peacock that it tried to mate with was a male, but by its action.....i'm not so sure of now. my guess was that the aggression was because of the those guys(peacocks), and he might have saw the albino as a threat....and thus eliminated the thread:mad:

i just hope my other tank mates will not get harassed as well. i'm hoping the bigger tank and more fish will chill him out.

i might even rearrange the tank and maybe take out the rock all together so that he does not have a territory or breeding area to fight for.

this is one thing that you will always have to deal with when you keep african cichlids. i have always followed the strategy of either more fish and less rock or less fish and more rock.

anyways.....rest in peace my albino red shouldered peacock.

Sorry to hear that! As you stated, it's a side effect of AC's. I simply have more tanks and less fish(plus lots and lots of rocks) to diffuse my guys tempers. You always have to pay attention regardless, though, you never know when one guy get's all horny and want's all the gals to himself ;)

ok so an update......i just put a deposit for a 180 gal glass tank, stand and canopy. i should get it in a few weeks. i also just received my fluval fx6 from amazon.......this thing looks sweet. i can't wait to set it up!!!!!

also i ordered more fish from kgtropicals. they should be here this friday. i do plan on removing about 6 of the fish that i currently have.

the ones that are going are the red shouldered, sunshine, and blue peacock. also leaving are three africans i can't identify as i bought it under the assorted african tank and my lfs had no idea what they were.

the ones i'm getting are:
Ngara Flametail Peacock, male 3"
Taiwan Reef, male 3"
3 X Blue dolphins
bucco noto
another trout cichlid (yes another one....theses guys are baddass!!!!)

so the plan is to move the 55 into another part of my room to make way for the 180 gal tank. the 55 will be a species only breeder tank.....gonna raise red cap lethrinops....and my 180 is my show tank.

all i need now is some heaters, gravel, and more rocks.

Great choices there! I cant wait to see this set up and running, it sounds awesome :)

ok so here is an update......

man i have been busy with work and this project of mind.........as i have been cleaning up my room, getting rid of old stuff as well as getting rid of some of the bookshelves so that i have room for my gigantic tank.

so now, my room only consists of a queen size bed, a night stand, a 55gal tank, and my soon to be 180 gal tank. no bookshelves or desks.....just a bed and tanks:D

i also finished paying everything off today so no need to worry about money as i'm now paid in full:) i am also paying my LFS to deliver my tank this coming thurs.....coordinating with my friends have proved unreliable at this point.

so here are a things to come:
1. weds-new fish arrival(this will give them a few days to acclimate after the trip from the east coast to the west caost).
2. thurs-tank, stand, and canopy gets delivered.
3. fri- paint the back of the tank
4. sat. setup the tank.
5. sun-move the fish over from the 55 to the 180.

also somewhere in those days, i need to buy more sand (might need about 100lbs!!!!!) and i need to get lights and some heaters as well.

pics on the setup will be coming soon;)

How are the other fish doing did you get the rocks

oh yeah i did get more rock....it is all i can afford for now.......i will have to wait see how the tank is setup before i know if i need more and how much if i do.

i got rid of some of the random africans that i got.....most of them were juiced(given hormones giving them more color now....which the color soon faded)....so i'm 6 short with 7 more to take their place on weds.

when my project is finally finished( it never really is) i will give you a species list of my tank.

Were the "juiced" fish from a LFS or the online retailer?
