My not so thrill review about G2x

hey folks, just to report back... I did a fair amount of digging into the issue my friend was having with her phone (not waking up from lock and random reboots) looking through the O2X stuff (I know they are not the exact same thing but pretty close) and decided to tell her (after a factory reset) to take the phone back and swap it out (because it appears with the o2X the lg knows about the issue, thats it is not on every phone/widespread and they have a fix in the works)
she took it to t-mobile, got a new one and has not had one single issue. no reboots, no "no-wakes" nothing...
shes VERY happy with the phone now

Is this a hardware problem or software problem? The way you describe it sounds hardware related, and that would suck badly. I hope it is a software related issue so it can easily be updated. I have had it lock up on me only once quite a few days ago. I am hoping it doesn't happen again.

I walked in to a Tmo store and asked for exchange. All the G2x phones are sold out. The guy said they got info from corporate to perform a master reset and will fix the problem. I told him I already reset the phone 3 times. Then he said they are working on an update to fix it.

So if the master reset can fix the problem, why are they working on an update?

That is surprising to hear. You are not the only one who doesn't really care for Vanilla Android.

I know most people cry and complain over skinned Android phones because of the UI "delaying OS updates" but Vanilla Android really is kind of boring and there doesn't seem to be as many features in the native Android UI like you can find on Skinned Versions.

I don't care for sense either...Touchwiz, Blur or Timescape for me or the one found on Sidekick is good enough for me but I would definitely take Sense over Vanilla.

LMAO, but at least if you keep it you will more then likely get the OS updates faster

I've been stoked with this phone so far even though there have been a few issues. New phones always seem to have some issues out of the gate. A couple bug fixes and we'll be good.

On another note:

The amount of phones you've gone through is pretty staggering Carmen, lol. How's the Sidekick 4G?

Yes, Yes i know :) But i have lowered my phones this year vs the amount of phones i've had this year around this same time(only a mytouch, g2, HD7 and Sidekick 4g.....I had owned quite a bit of phones by April 2010 last year)

But the sidekick is an incredible device. I actually thought about doing a review for Youtube(my first Android review) but finals are coming up at school and i dont have the time!

I love the keyboard, design , hardware and UI of the sidekick. Just a fun device and the G2X looks lovely as well...I just hate Stock Android with an extreme passion

Haha yes I've done the same this year. It's too hard to go cold turkey. I think you should do a sidekick review I'd love to see it. I've thought about that phone a lot because I used to use sidekick phones and it's almost a nostalgic feeling for me. I'm liking the G2X a lot and I've messed with the UI enough so it's not just a plain android screen. :)

it was caused by them going to fast

Lol. Yes, but what software is causing it? What in the software is causing it? Is it a specific software state that some people are randomly activating? Why is it showing up for some but not others?

I should :) If i can get about 2 hours of free time this week, i will definitely try and do it.

LOL i'll be so nervous. I've done youtube videos before(had my own youtube channel at one time) but i've never actually did reviews about phones or tech so this will be new territory.

But if i dont do one for the Sidekick, then i plan on getting the Droid charge or Xperia play and may just do one for those!

is the G2x the same phone as the Lg Optimus 2X...just with a G thrown in front of it for tmobile?

It's the same hardware, yes, but the Optimus 2X has a horrible skin on it (LG's not so good at that) whereas the G2X is Vanilla with basically no bloat save for a couple apps.

That probably means i would like the Optimus 2x because i generally like all skins vs stock android

Hell, I love the blur found on phones like backflip, devour etc. vs stock....ughhh

I'd recommend SPB Shell 3D. It's a costly UI in the Marketplace ($15) but so far I love the UI over vanilla android and the G2X handles it quite well.

Ewwww really? I owned the Cliq for a few days when it came out, I hated blur. I agree that maybe you'd like SPB Shell though. I'd be curious to try a sense 3.0 rom on the G2X if someone does a Sensation port, but I likely would still go back to Vanilla anyway.

Ehh, I'll check it out. It has to be great to be 15 bucks haha

And I love Blur but it's obvious you and I use our phones differently. I like Blur because of the social networking aspects. I really had no need to download 3rd party apps because the integration was already built in to the phone/os

Android natively sucks at social networking integration and even UI like Sense, touchwiz, and timescape fail to match the social networking skills of Blur.

I like it that i can check twitter, facebook, myspace(dont use it anymore) at the same time i checked my texts and emails

Well to be honest it sounds like we actually use our phones very much alike. The biggest things I do on my phone are facebook, twitter, e-mail, and texting. The universal inbox (whatever they call it) on blur is a very good idea, i just didn't like the garish manner in which they executed it. I think it would be great for Android to natively offer more of that integration. I'm not entirely against skins, I just think a lot of them are horrible. I'm pretty interested in the Sidekick UI but I'm not sure I'm willing to sacrifice the extra raw power the G2X has for it. I'm still looking forward to the youtube of it though. ;)

The sidekick Ui is my new favorite :)

After Timescape, TouchWiz, and the latest blur :) Sense is somewhere towards the bottom...just only above stock ha

I just got mine today so far only one wake up problem. Wow wish I had that problem:) So Far 4G all day lowest was 2 bars usually its maxed. Love the WIFI calling option as well. My wake up problem was putting my SD card and reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeloading all the apps from the other phone. I do like the new 2.2.2 software. Seems to have its own app killer built in as well.

Hey I have a question about the phone. It seems to have this factory screen protector is it okay to take it off or is that actually part of the screen? My question may sound dumb but I really don't know.

That's not a screen protector. That's just a piece of plastic cover the finishing . Just like when you buy anything new, it will be some plastic cover anything shiny.

No, actually I think it is a screen protector -- otherwise, why would it have cutouts for the front-facing camera and the ambient light and proximity sensors? It's just not a very good screen protector (IMHO) -- collects smudges and fingerprints just as well as the bare screen. However, feel free to take it off (I did as soon as I bought a belt-clip case and didn't have to carry it in my pocket any more). I have a Clarivue anti-glare on back-order, to address the reflections and smudges.
