My Replacement Evo is a Refurb....

I'm a little concerned. I just got a replacement because my original EVO's camera flash went out. I had hardware version 003 and the replacement is hardware version 002. It also has a couple scuffs and a scratch. I wouldn't worry so much about the scuffs and stuff but I don't like the fact taht I was given hardware version 002 when my original was 0003. Didn't version 002 have a few problems that were fixed on 003?

I wouldnt worry too much. just keep an eye on it. For what it worth, my GF has version 002 from launch day and its flawless. I have inspected up and down to make sure it has no problems... You'll pry be fine too.

That's odd. I wonder why you got an actual refurb and I didn't...

Who know. I got home and picked up the box and knew it was a refurb just due to the weight. The kickstand is scuffed up and so is the camera lens. It also has 2.2 and is hardware revision 2. I am keeping my launch day Evo because other than 100% awake time that isnt affecting the battery too terribly, my internet issue seems to have been worked out. They did send me a refurbished battery, cheesy wall charger and brand new battery cover though.

Hahahahaha:p I did not drop it in the toilet. Check this out. Sprint sent me a refurb on Monday, I received it on Wednesday (low and behold light leakage, Hardware ver 002). I spent the next 2 hours on the phone with 4 different "Managers" trying to get this phone replaced. Well the last lady I spoke with ordered me an EVO from Asurion and Sprint paid the deductible, she then told me to take the refurb'd unit to a Sprint Corp. store and return it. I drive 25 miles to the nearest Sprint store only for them to refuse it and say they don't take back refur'd EVO's. Well I am on the phone at Sprint trying to get this issue taken care of. I end up leaving the Sprint store and went home. Sprint then sent me a UPS return label and I took the phone to a UPS store today. I called Asurion and they will ship my NEW EVO next day air sometime next week.

So I get home today and there was a box on my doorstep. Sprint sent me ANOTHER EVO (I did not ask for another unit). It's brand new (Hardware 003 and NO Light Leakage or Dust under screen). BTW - The Dust under the screen on my original EVO is spreading (it's getting worse). SO I call Sprint to let them know that they shipped me ANOTHER EVO. They told me to keep this unit and I ALSO get to keep the EVO from Asurion and just send Asurion the original EVO. What a bunch of Morons. The funny thing is when I called on Tuesday to see if Sprint was going to ship my EVO, they told me my order had been cancelled and to go thru Asurion. Within 3 days I have received 2 EVO's (1 new & 1 Refurb'd) from Sprint.
I would wait at least 90 days before selling the extra Evo to make sure they dont bill your account. A couple of years ago I had a hell of a time even getting them to take my replaced phone back and even worse, credit my account the 500 they incorrectly billed to it because of not letting me return the device.

I got a version 2 refurbished for my replacement. ##786# says it was reconditioned on 8/12/10. As long as I don't get any cracks or screen separation I don't care.

It came with 2.2.

Yet another refurb sprint customer serviceless nightmare:
had internet issues would come and go. went to the sprint store and they said no prob... well send you another. 3 days later it comes to my door. the camera lens was scratched, and showed much other wear and tear!!
Call customer serviceless and was told after approx 45 minutes on the phone, they would send me a new one. 2 days pass and I call back and they are clueless. 1/2 hour on phone again and 2 levels up in stupervisors and they assured me they would over night me a new one to my door.
This was friday and they sent me a UPS tracking number this time... dorks sent it ground. It showed up today with an extra bonus... the dorks sent 2! Its there nickel to ship them all back, but I gotta say they need to get the act together.. dorks

I hope that I didn't jinx myself, but it's now 2 months later & no issues with my refurb so far....
keeping my fingers crossed.... LOL

Ive personally had good luck with refurbished electronics so I'd say just enjoy it as long as there are no physical and component issues. My theory on refurb is that new electronics are made quickly and not individually tested, while a refurb is put in a trained technician's hands to clean and make sure completely functional before giving the "seal of approval".

good luck.

The only time you get a new replacement is if there is not any refurbished stock. That typically only happens if your phone is replaced in the first week to month of a new phone being introduced.

Does it really matter? They re-used my SD card & battery, & it does look new,

but I'm not really a fan of anything "refurbished"....

or within the first 30 days of ownership they are required to replace it with a brand new phone. After 30 days its up to the stock. I had my phone replaced a couple of months ago, long after my 30 days, and they replaced it with a brand new one. Sure enough, the same problems came back so honestly new or refurb, it probably doesn't matter.

my replacement phone from asurion is a refurb, has light leakage, and the four buttons on the bottom barely light up.

pretty frustrating considering mine never had either of those problems.

I sent my rebooting EVO to HTC under factory warranty and got it back in two weeks with a new main board installed at no cost - other than the $15 to ship it to HTC in Texas.

I checked and found it is not a refurb board and is hardware 0003 with 2.2 installed.

Got mine. It is brand new, not a refurbished one, hardware version 004. My original was 003. The only problem was a cracked camera lens that still took photos, but in bright light there would be rainbows. Oh, and the video was choppy; I am guessing because it had an older screen with a limited fps rate. I tested video on the new phone; no choppiness. The bad part is I have to go spend another $25 to get the screen protector and then buy a new case, since my body glove case broke. It's all worth it if the camera will take good photos again.

Well, I'm on my 2nd replacement. Speakerphone went bad on my refurb, too.
So, they gave ($31.) me another refurb. Let's see how long til this speaker goes south......

Replacement for a stuck pixel was a refurb and other then some glue that etched the screen in the lower right corner was perfect. Oh well on to Evo number 3. If the next one has issues I am demanding a new one. Sprint employee said after several attempts at refurbs they give you a new one. Man what a waste of time and energy.

What sounds better:

Used or Refurbished?

Cause the NEW phone that you take out of the box today is called "used" tomorrow.

A "refurbished" phone implies that someone gave it a good once over, and perhaps even replaced the screen...

If I was buying on eBay, I'd rather see "refurb" than "used"

But at Best Buy you pay like 14.99 a month for that Black Tie thing or whatever vs the 7.00 a month when you go through Asurion. I dont care about refurbs, the work and look just as good and go through testing over and over before they are resold anyway

After days of on and off troubleshooting and repairs, my local sprint repair center has decided to order me a new phone. This would be my first time dealing with a replacement phone with Sprint and have some questions before I pick it up tomorrow.

-I have a hardware version 3 Evo and have concerns about getting one of the earlier ones that have some bad history with light leakage, space in the edges of the screen, etc. Can I demand a new Evo (which by default would make it one of the newer versions) if I get an earlier version?

-I've had some really, really bad luck with refurbs. Back in the day when I was using the T-Mobile Sidekick II, I went through about 10 refurb returns within a month. I've read of people asking a supervisor for a new phone and getting one. If you've had this happen, please share how it went for you.

Nope, nothing you can do about that. To sprint, hardware versions mean nothing.

I'm a service tech at a sprint store a and I can tell you that on a refurbished phone the only part that's actually refurbished is the board. All of the casing is new.

A note generally about problems with refurbs...

The only time you should really be worried about getting a refurb over a new unit is phones that have a history of intermittent problems (*cough*Touch Pro).

After my originally new Touch Pro died from getting wet, the refurbs I got from Asurion were a continuing problem. Random reboots, slowdowns, radios not working, etc. It would all happen completely at random. When I'd take it into the shop I'd always get the same thing.

"If we can't reproduce the problem, all we can do is file an insurance claim for you"

I imagine lots of these refurbs with intermittent problems would show up, a tech couldn't find anything wrong, so it was flashed and thrown back in the out box to go to the next person who returned one for the exact same reason.

All of the common issues with the Evo seem to be easily reproduced so I imagine they have a nearly 100% rate of sending out perfectly working phones.

Neither am i.I just think new is better esp when it comes to electronics but i must say i have had refurb's in the past as replacements(not for the evo) but for the hero and moment and mine have worked just as well...As long as there are no issues and its working correctly now, then you should be happy for that...I've had tons of phone issues until i got the evo so be thankful you have a functioning phone

It turns out I ended up with a referb today and it has light leakage along with the bottom 4 touch-buttons all being different brightness levels. I called sprint and they said only the store handles replacements. The technician at the store says all the new refurbs have light leakage so he won't order a new one. He said he'd change the screen for me when he gets new ones and that it usually takes care of light leakage. Any advice? I really wanted a new one, not a refurb. :C

I spoke to customer service. I actually talked to an agent, then a supervisor, then the supervisor escalated me up to a higher agent. They all told me the same thing - replacements are done through the store. The last lady I spoke to gave the store a call and that's when the store technician told me that he'd replace the screen in hopes of resolving the light leakage. I just don't think that the new screen would do it and like he said, most refurbs come with that issue these days.

I just don't want to have to keep going back for new refurbs every other day in hopes of getting one that doesn't have any light leakage AND works fine.
