Has anyone tried any of the custom Mytouch 4g roms? I've tried Ice Glacier Themed and Unthemed, I didn't like the Themed but the Unthemed is a very nice rom.

Not on the MT4G threads much...but im pretty sure that the Iced Glacier is the only ROM out for the phone...correct me if I'm wrong!

I just tried the CyanogenMOD 6.1 ALPHA . It was too bare bones for me
I had problems getting google apps installed it did have an awesome
Boot animation. Back to Unthemed Glacier.

Ok I tried the CyanMOD 6.1 again figured out the Google apps installation trick. You have to use the gapps-hdpi.zip put the unzip it and leave the zip in the same directeroy and use rom manager to install rom from sdcard leave backup and wipe unchecked. It should boot into recovery install all the apps and restart with the google setup prompt.

That's ROM flashing basics. If you had to "discover" this, then you didn't read your rooting instructions properly.

I would advise you to slow down and read the tutorials more thoroughly before you flash your next rom. Missing small details can sometimes result in bricking your device.

It's my phone to brick and yes I was following the damn instructions.

Download the latest version of CyanogenMod.
Optional: Download the HDPI Google Apps* for your phone.
Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the SD card.
Optional: Place the Google Apps .zip on the root of the SD card also.
Boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
Once you enter ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side volume buttons to move around, and either the power button or the trackball to select.
Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset.
Then select the option to Wipe cache partition.
Select Install zip from sdcard.
Select Choose zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.
Optional: Install the Google Apps by performing steps 7 - 9 again and choosing the Google Apps update.zip.
Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. Your HTC Glacier should now boot into CyanogenMod.

I was a bit harsh on you and I apologize. There are a lot of newbies running around here who don't read instructions at all and post questions that could have been answered if they had used the damn search button. Very obnoxious.

FWIW, the tutorial you followed is a lot more thorough than a lot of them, lol. Glad your phone is up and running now. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am eagerly looking forward to a CM6 RC for the Glacier. Love this phone but Sense doesn't agree with me, although I'm becoming surprisingly accustomed to it.

Glad I'm not the only one who's noticed this my only problem was getting s-off but someone directed me to a more helpful tutorial.
You gotta remember that because of the way this thing is marketed that there's gonna be a lot of android noobs.
The one thing that strikes a nerve with me is people constantly whining about battery life. People don't seem to understand the power under the hood of this thing. Its like buying a full size truck and expecting the gas mileage of a hybrid car. It just doesn't work that way.

i found a happy medium since i didn't really want to permaroot right now (i think i'll wait until the ROMs are a little more mature and have all the kinks worked out) ... and launcherpro fills in most/all of the holes for me that Sense/Espresso was lacking ...

i temp-rooted with visionARY yesterday and ran Titanium and froze all the bloatware/unwanted apps .. which basically keeps the system from accessing them (not using CPU, etc anymore, doesn't show up in the drawer) however - they are still on the phone and can simply be 'unfrozen' at any time in case I ever need/want them again.

then restart then phone - and viola! no more root and all the bloatware stays frozen.

i've got like 450mb of available RAM now .. the booting process is faster, the phone is snappier (though it was lightning before), and i'm guessing i'm going to see an improvement in battery life also ..

Couple of points:

Telling someone to slow down and read instructions might sound harsh (even if unintended) but remember that they are trying to save you from making an expensive mistake. ;)

Everyone comes from different backgrounds and have different levels of comfort with rooting/romming these devices. This forum has always been about helping others make the most out of their Android devices. Please, let's not snap at those people trying to help. Android "newbies" and those that are just new to a certain device are often overwhelmed when they first get into rooting. The best piece of advice I can offer echoes Phateless's comments about slowing down and reading carefully BEFORE proceeding.

For all those that root and ROM their devices and then take the time to come back and help answer questions or directing users to a "better way of doing things"...THANK YOU! It can be a time consuming task (and sometimes frustrating) but your efforts are greatly appreciated! :D

Back to what started all this... I was already running Cyanogen Mod, if you follow the google apps installation instructions from cyanogen it doesn't install. I "discovered" a work around for this and was sharing it with you all. I never had any issues with my phone or needed to "slow down". Sorry if I responded harshly earlier.

Thanks for your comments, I'm sure I'll have questions today. You'll see why at the end of my post. ;)

Please elaborate. What's different from flashing through recovery right after the rom?

I just can't wait for official cyanogen for our phones

Funny you should say that...

CyanogenMod-6.1 for MT4G :: NIGHTLY (12/17/2010) - xda-developers

When you try to install googe apps from recovery it errors because for some reason it can't extract it from the .zip. So what you have to do is move the gapps zip onto your sd card an unzip it leaving the zip folder and the unzipped folder in the same directory. Then use the install rom from sdcard in rom manager and it install no problem. make sure you have backup rom and wipe data unchecked.

You guys seemed to have self-corrected the situation on your own...no need for apologies to me.

I just took the opportunity to address the issue with some "Noobs" rushing into things without fully understanding what they are doing (common problem). It seems as if you did know what you were doing but I was just trying to emphasize the point that Phateless was only trying to help (whether you needed it or not :)).

Has anyone been able to flash back to their stock recovery after flashing Clockworkmod?
I tried using flash_image in terminal I get "flash_image not found".

I haven't attempted. I'm not really interested in going back to stock I should give it a try sometime but when I attempted this with the MT3G I broke it (couldn't receive phone calls). So I'm a little put off by the whole reverting back thing now.
