Root Nand back up question

Please bear with me...this is probably a dumb question. The NAND backup has 3 options. 1. Device recovery. 2. Rom manager 3. Amon_RA. I'm a bit confused. I choose one of these options?? Which one is the best option for a very nervous rooter?? Rom manager has a warning that I will permanently lose the stock recovery....isnt this bad? lol. I just wonder which option I should use. I intend to follow the instructions perfectly from rooting for dummies. One more question, can I just remove the sd card from my phone before rooting instead of formatting it? Does it need to be in the phone for rooting process? Why does my stomach feel so nervous?? Lol Thanks so much for the advice and help. :)

Welcome. I'm assuming you're referencing ROOTING For Dummies + Extra's, right? Device Recovery would be the best way to create a nand backup BUT you can't do this until you have unlocked nand access (S-OFF), which means you've obtained full root. ROM Manager is an application which uses Clockworkmod Recovery and has a backup option; if you're completely new to root and aren't comfortable doing things manually, this application is a good start. It's easy and simple to use. Amon-RA is pretty much the standard when it comes to which recovery we're (rooting community) all using, it's just an overall more solid recovery that's less buggy....In any case, you need to be rooted to perform/use any of these.

As for losing the stock recovery, don't worry about it. You won't be able to unlock nand access w/o replacing the stock recovery w/ a custom one.

I didn't format my sdcard prior to rooting and all was fine....it's just a formality at best.

Last but not least, that feeling in your stomach won't go away until you're rooted and enjoying all the benefits that come with it. Just know that you're following an awesome guide and have us in case you need further assistance. Once again, welcome.

Ok, thank you for your quick response. Maybe I'm nervous because I'm rooting my daughters evo for her...Lol. I was not sure I wanted to root, she is. I guess if I don't brick her Evo , I will do mine. Lol. I'm the one that convinced her to come to the Evo in the first place. She keeps saying, just do it, I know the risk. Thank you so much for the help. :) I can leave the sd card in the evo then, right?

No worries, btw, I've never heard/read about ANYONE bricking their phone while rooting via unrevoked's one click method. Happy rooting!

Your the greatest, Ill try now. I can leave the sd card in the evo? Thanks again. :) Happy Easter to you and yours.

Hope your still around...,.did the unrevoked, trying to get in bootloader mode. I held the vol down and the power button but i do not see,Bootloader as a option to select. I see
Hboot...fastboot, recovery, clear storage, simlock and Hboot usb. What to do now? Thanks so much

Nevermind, I see the the Supersonic EVT2-3 SHIP S-off and the other stuff thats under it. lol

You see S-OFF? So it was a success! Congrats on rooting! Now download wifi tether from the market and start enjoying the fruits of your labor! :p

All is well, I am still in bootloader mode, it says to update PRL and profile. Ready for the dumb question??? What do I select from the bootloader mode to get back to the Evo home screen so I can do the PRL and profile update? Stuck in the bootloader mode...lol. Thanks again :)

Just select fastboot then reboot.

Frenchy714 you are a life saver.....:) . More questions if you dont mind. Do I have to flash a ROM right now or can I use this as is for now?? What is a good first Rom to flash? Did that process include a nand back up or do I need to do that now? Just about done (I hope) then Ill stop asking silly questions. Id give you a big chocolate bunny for your help, if I could. Lol

You can stay w/ the stock ROM as long as you want and never *have* to flash a custom ROM. I would recommend Mikfroyo, Myn's Warm, Fresh ROM, Sprint Lover's, I don't know if you or your daughter like themed ROM's but if you do, King's Unleased (any of them), Koni's ELITE Series (any of them). They are all good, fast, stable, and have everything working in them. You can find all the ROM's I listed, here. You can also search this forum and I can pretty much guarantee we have threads dedicated to those ROM's, where you can read up on user's experiences w/ them.

Thank you for all your help. I will try those roms out too. Who knows maybe an hour from now. Lol. Do I do any back ups now. I'm not sure. Thanks again.

Yeah, it's always good to have a stock nandroid backup you can always revert to if necessary. Till this day, I still have my stock backup lol.

I agree with Frenchy's post above for the ROMs to check out if you want. But first and foremost, before trying out any ROMs, make a nand backup. That way, if you ever mess up anything, you can always restore your backup.

For the stock feel, Fresh and Sprint Lovers are basically the same as the stock ROM, minus the bloatware that Sprint forces your phone to carry.
