Root Nandroid Backup Question

I just rooted.

I did a Nandroid backup and it saved it to my SD card.

My question is, if I install a ROM that needs to do a full wipe, does it wipe my SD card too?

Should I copy the Nandroid Backup folder to my PC beforehand?

SD won't be affected but its always a good idea to save backups to the pc in case something flukey happens to your card. Plus I take that opportunity to delete all but my original and latest backup off the card because they take up a huge amount of card space.

One other question. I did a nand backup this morning and I realized that around the same time, an update.zip was created in the root of my sd card.

So does nand crate one everytime? And do I need to save it? Because if I download a new ROM and rename it update.zip how would I know which is which?

I delete any update.zip from my SD card directly after using it. It's way too easy to inadvertantly choose the update.zip option in Clockwork instead of the install zip from SD card option. That would especially suck if the update.zip were reflashing the new radio which has been known to brick phones.
