Help naughty app *slaps hand*

loony

Android Enthusiast
Alot seem to be having bad battery life from faulty handsets but some are just bad apps squeezin the juice. If you have come across such an app, could you please post here to let others know which ones might be best not to use if its comfirmed to be a net/juice sucker?
(if its not breaking any site rules - admin? if so, just delete thread)

Dont get me wrong, dont want to start a hate campain against publishers or a debate war on the best/worst one....it just would be easier to help those before a full reset must be done. :o

I'm not an admin but I can say that there's no reason to prohibit such a topic. In fact I think it's a great idea.... just keep to the usual site rules.

Well let's get started. The infamous 'wifi sharing' app/manager/thing that comes pre-loaded on your GS2; magically starting itself at random to kill your battery in a few short hours!

The problem with a thread like this is that everyone's experience is different. I stay logged in to Skype most of the time and it hasn't caused any problems.

I also have had no problems with the wifi hotspot, whether I am using it or not.

OTOH, yesterday I used my SGS2 as a SatNav for the first time and in an 80 minute journey, the battery went from about 95% to about 20%. I charged it while I was at a client site and then used it again. In about the same time, the battery went from 80% to almost flat. Normally I would just keep it charging but I was in a hire car and didn't have a car charger.

PS I'm using KE2.

yes your right Lotus but i wanted to have a starting point of apps to maybe think twice about installing/using and if your going to give it ago to KNOW its one to monitor yourself. -ive always been concerned of sat-nav stuff, thanks for the info

Its not right to condone an app because 1 person has a bad experience, you can see that from comments at app stores, one will say its the best and another will say its crap.

everyone's experience is different guaranteed....so everyone share YOUR experience.
If ten people say app 'X' working great and 1 says its causing them problems, it would be helpful to that user that the problem may exist elsewhere, not with the app.

the process of elimination assists to the answer of the problem.

A little more maturity by the reviewers of the app would ber a good start (on the market, I mean).

Down-rating an app because you 'don't like it' is not helpful without more data.

I didn't mean to suggest we shouldn't be discussing this, I just wanted to point out that there is likely to be a variety of experiences.

I do think we are likely to get more intelligent and insightful comments here than on the marketplace.

Interestingly, I had problems with NoLed and have uninstalled.

I used it for several weeks but yesterday I didn't have the chance to look at my phone at all for about 8 hours. And it turned out I'd missed a text hours and hours previously. You wouldn't think a little dot moving around the screen would make much difference. But when I took my unused-all-day phone out at home, it was down to 44% battery life remaining! Checking battery usage, it said the screen had used 60% of the battery life. I've gone for Missed Message Flasher instead. This is audible, not visual (which actually suits me better tbh) and I can tell it to stop alerting me after a certain time. Plus if the phone's on silent you can tell it to stay silent - so yesterday it wouldn't have alerted me at all, nor used any battery life. After 8 hours, you can bet you switch on your phone and look at it!

+1 for problems with noLed - got it set up how i wanted it and used it merrily for a few days until i was away from my phone for a few hours, by which time i had had a few messages/missed calls and suddenly i was also missing around 25% battery in that time also.
Uninstalled (disappointingly)...

interesting, can people post the firmware they are on too please?
Its another thing that will vary between many. i havnt seen any issue with noled on KF2, but im keen to test now.

Guys, I hear your pain with NoLED.

I've just noticed though with a recent update, that in the settings, you can now select how long you want the flashing dot to appear on your screen. It might be worth selecting something like 1 hour and this should minimise unnecessary battery burnout. Interestingly, the dev has also add the feature, to turn the NoLED off, if the proximity sensor is activated.

've used this for when the screen is turned over at night or when in a pocket etc to save the battery and it saved quite a lot of juice. May be worth a try?

Also problems with NoLED? Maybe an update decreased it's efficiency?

I've been using it a while, perfectly fine it seemed... I've been away a week, charged up and switched on today, did a shit ton of auto updates, and carried on using the phone to find that NoLED has used a huge percentage of my battery today?! Pretty sure in the couple of weeks I used it it used much less power... and surely I left a few notifications a few hours here and there before?!

Matt

I am yet another person to have had problems with no-LED (Not that you need anymore people!).

I find that even using the proximity sensor mode the battery will drain still with it in my pocket. Maybe having the sensor on all the time is a drainer?

Shame, because I love this app otherwise: Always having to turn on the screen to see the time and stuff sucks!

KF2

Ive uninstalled Noled, but not noticing anything major (on KF2)
Ive just upgraded to KF4 so im gunna run without it for a while, then put it back on and see what happens

Having used my SGS2 for navigation a little more (see post above) I have established that it is not the navigation itself that results in such high drain, it is having the screen on all the time.

When I tried turning the screen off and just listening to the directions, it worked fairly well.

Having said that, in future I think I shall just treat this (like HD movie playback) as something that can only practically be done while the phone is plugged in all the time.

thanks for the testing and feedback. ive been shy about using this thinking the constant updating of the program would chew more than the screen. interesting.
