can anyone tell me what the cons of 'S-Off' are?

i believe this may be why my rommanager is failing to flash and backup and things!

im permarooted via visionary, and would like to install leedroid for the improved bat life :P

thanks for any help in advanced :)

If you don't have s-off, then you aren't truely rooted, and can't flash roms or anything else using rom manager.

The cons? Well they are the same cons as rooting gives you. You can't take system updates OTA. You void your phone's warranty. Custom roms, while usually good, can have bugs. You take the risk of bricking your phone anytime you do anything from recovery. Etc. etc. But most of us will agree, the pros way outweigh the cons.

I would get rid of the Rom Manager. We see it causing many failures recently.

S-Off flashes a custom HBoot making the phone ignore the security flag. This enables you to get a write access to /system partition, and re-partition internal memory.

Oh I see, I didnt know I couldn't take OTA updates! Maybe this is why I haven't recieved my gingerbread update yet!

Thanks guys :)

no no, you can most definitely get a notification that an OTA is available while you are rooted. But you should NEVER accept an OTA update if you're rooted because it can seriously screw up your phone.

Best practice here is to disable notification of updates so you don't accidentally accept one. A lot of custom ROMs have already disabled this, but not always.
