Root Need a ROM suggestion

First thing, verify that you are currently running Froyo build EB13 on your Epic. Verify that the ROM that you want to use is an EB13 build and is EXT4 capable.

Download the ROM that you want. Keep it in the .zip format and place it on your SD card.
Download the Default Stock Dual FS kernel For EB13 and keep in the .zip format and place it on your SD card.

Download THIS and leave it on your windows computer. Reference this thread if wanted....

Per the directions on XDA (with some added commentary):
1. Unzip the file from directly above to your desktop.
2. Go into your phone and Go to settings->Applications->Development and turn on USB Debugging.
3. Now double click run.bat in the folder you unzipped. (If you are on linux ./run.sh from the folder)
4. Wait for everything to happen.
5. Use the THREE BUTTON METHOD to get to CWM3.
6. Wait for the conversion operation to finish.
7. DO NOT REBOOT!!!!
8. IF YOU ARE ON AN ODEXED ROM (DEFAULT OTA) THEN YOU NEED TO REFLASH A ROM AFTER THE CONVERSION!!!!!!! ODEXED ROMS DO NOT GET RESTORED PROPERLY!
9. Flash the Default Stock Dual FS kernel For EB13: http://efragtv.com/android/EB13-DUALFS-KERNEL.zip ***You should already have this saved to your SD Card if you followed the directions above***
10. Enjoy CWM 3.0.0.5/6

In completely untested and unconfirmed theory, step 7 says that you cannot reboot. I believe this to mean that your phone will not properly load until the steps are completed.

I would STRONGLY advise making a nandroid backup first (prior to doing any of this). Additionally, it is important that you boot into recovery using the 3 Button method (instead of ROM Manager or Quick Boot). Additionally, don't forget to wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache (found under advanced) three times each prior to flashing a ROM.

Volume Keys scroll up and down in Recovery. Camera Key is your enter button.

Thank you so much for all of this information!

Before I start I do have a couple of questions for you though. 1) I just recently installed froyo 2.2.1 via the Samsung website. I did this via a .zip file on my SD card. So I am certain I am running the latest version. How do I make sure of that though? 2) I am already rooted via the 1 click method as of about a week ago...and have run a nandroid backup as recently as today. So where do I begin since I have all of that in place?

1) Menu/Settings/About Phone. Scroll down to Baseband Version and Build Number. Both should say EB13 at the end of their lines.

2) IIRC, the one click method you used previous did not set your phone up for EXT4 (but rather kept it on RFS). If you are certain you have a current nandroid you can skip JUST that step but the rest will need done.

Anytime man... we all were there at one time and once you are familiar with it you'll be able to help out others as well. :)

Ok I am ready to start this but I want to be abundantly clear about everything so can you, utilizing your instructions above, tell me what step # to start at? Or what step # or #'s to leave out?

I have verified EB13 and I know for a fact I ran a nandroid backup last night & again today.

Thanks again!

Do them all :)

And one more thing...the ROM I'm going to flash includes the kernel, so I can skip that too, right? I'm going with the standard version here: [ROM][ACS] SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0 (Manriki) :: EB13/EXT4 - *NO CARRIER IQ*, DETAILS! - xda-developers

You SHOULD be ok if you skip that step then (if not then reboot into recovery and flash the other version in the directions).

Well it's been longer than 10 minutes now. Should I pull the battery?

Yes.

Then reboot into recovery manually, wipe cache, data and dalvik cache (under advanced) three times each and reflash the ROM (install .zip from SD).

When you booted into recover did it go through the setup of everything (i.e. No error messages)?

Ok, pulled battery. When I wipe cache it says:

Wiping cache
Formatting cache
Cache wipe complete
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log

Is that what it should say?

And yes it did go through setup with no errors. Flashed kernel then gave me some kind of message (can't remember exactly what it said) and then I manually rebooted.

Sounds right. Do the wipes and try again. It is also possible that you got a bad DL of the ROM and may need to DL it and put it on your SD card again.

Wiping data
Formatting DATA
Formatting CACHE
Formatting SDEXT
No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext.
formatting SDCARD:/.android_secure...
Data wipe complete
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log

When trying to wipe Dalvik

E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)

Edited: now it says Dalvik Cache wiped.

This is what it did last time then I manually rebooted and it hung up on the samsung screen. Should I manually reboot again?

Download the ROM again (or a different EXT4 enabled ROM), sounds like a bad DL then.

Alternatively, use Odin to return to stock and we'll work on it more tomorrow.

Use Odin? Can't I just do a restore? I have no idea what Odin is....

Now I am feeling incredibly sick to my stomach....

Don't panic, it's my understanding that as long as it comes on it can be fixed. So you haven't bricked it.

Odin is the Samsung recovery tool, easy to use. I'm using my phone right now so I don't have the libk to paste but it can be found with a quick search here.

Running the restore from my phone and this is what's on my screen:

Been on that lost+found quite awhile now though
