Need Advice- Too Late to Buy an Epic?

Question you have to ask yourself is this....
do you REALLY want / need the physical keyboard? if yes, then by all means, get the EPIC, if not, maybe wait and check out the NEXUS S when it hits Sprint.

Well for some people there is one really big difference. It comes with Android 2.3 gingerbread on launch day, and will get future OS versions before any other device, cuz its googles phone. If thats something that is high on your priority list, then thats a sizeable difference.... granted im pretty sure the Epic will get 2.3 as well though, but who knows past that.

Preface: I wouldn't consider myself a "phone guy" but I do my fair share of homework before buying electronics.
I just bought the Epic on Saturday (April 30) from Best Buy for $49. They honored radioshack.com's price, even though it was out of stock there.
I spent the past few weeks debating between the Epic and the Nexus S. My main concerns about the Epic were its size (I don't need a physical keyboard) and the fact that it's been on the market for nine months now, but the core specs are about the same, and I don't think I need a "pure google experience," immediate access to upgrades, or the NFC technology.
If the Epic had still been $199, it probably would not have been a contest since I like how sleek the Nexus S is and the prospect of a better battery life. But for $150 less, it was an easy decision. Also, from playing with the Nexus S a bit, I also noticed that I didn't like the camera interface/controls (even though I only use the camera sparingly), and while not a dealbreaker, I really hated that the Nexus S doesn't have an LED notification light. And having never used swype before, I definitely like it, although I don't know if that would have been on the Nexus S or not.
Either way, just a few days in with the Epic, and I'm happy with it.

Who is say that Sprint will not have the same modifications to the SGS2 as the Epic, and make it more of an Epic 2 (i.e. Slide Out Keyboard)? I don't think that is all unreasonable, but could delay the release of it on the Sprint Network. Time will tell...

I paid $60 shipped for each of our epics. radioshack.com which is wirefly wireless.
I don't think they are out dated. I was just waiting for them to be under $100 before we upgrade. And I flashed a new rom on there and it's really good.

Address the need for a keyboard first. If you do need one, I'd pick up the Epic on ebay or craigslist and keep my contract open for the GS2 in hopes that Sprint is smart enough to get a slider version of it. I know I'll be peeved if they don't. And Gingerbread on the Epic is looking pretty sweet. Could easily carry you to your next phone without worries of having to have Ice Cream on your phone.
If you don't need a keyboard....
The Nexus S is completely overrated unless you have to have the newest version of android yesterday. No gorilla glass. No removable memory. Same basic specs as the Epic debuting almost a year later. And three of the Sprint stores I've been in the past week all have said they are getting a high amount of returns on the Nexus for some bug or another. I had my own issues to contend with so I tuned out the specifics.
The Evo3d is gimmicky, but it has nice specs, but I'd wait on the GS2.
Personally, I think a keyboard is essential if you use Office apps on a regular basis or do lengthy emails. I just think having a full screen at your disposal while typing is key and makes you more productive. The directional keys and function key make editing text so much easier. There are a lot of benefits to a hard keyboard with the only real knock being the added thickness of the phone. And the Epic is a pretty light phone and fits well in the hand as it is.

The EPIC is a very powerful device, even if it's successor will come out in a few months. If you're looking for the latest and greatest, I'd wait for the EVO 3D or the the Within. If you're looking for a powerful device right now on Sprint, or don't want to dish out $199-299 for a new phone (probably what the EVO 3D and the Within will go for), I highly recommend the EPIC.

$200 for the 3D at the Shack. $100 if you're dumb enough to trade in your old Evo.
