Need external battery charger -- they don't exist?

Here's an option....

Okay I'm surprised I no one has discovered this yet (that I've heard/seen/read)
If you were a previous Samsung Instinct owner, like I was, you are in luck!!! Because you have an external battery charger, and one or two extra COMPATIBLE batteries.

I was just sitting around tonight and picked up my phone (minimal use today) 15% battery :( Well there was my old instinct external charger and battery sitting there staring at me, seemingly taunting me. Knowing that the instinct battery was very similar in shape I got kind of curious.... So I powered off, took off the back plate, took out the Moment battery, and slid the Instinct battery into place. Wow... kinda fits, doesn't really move around much, surely it wont work... Turned the phone over, held down the power button for a couple seconds... SAMSUNG.... IT WORKED! I let the Andriod OS fire up and the battery meter read 60%... not bad, considering the battery hasn't been touched for almost a month.... but, maybe a distorted read since its a different battery (less mAh)

Well, surely it will fall out of place with ease and the phone will power off rendering it useless. I refixed the back plate and shook the phone around. Still on. Dropped the phone on the carpet from about 3 feet up. Still on. Put it in my pocket and ran in place for a few seconds. Still on. Battery meter still at 60%

I haven't done any type of battery life test yet, but as far as I'm concerned this will be HUGE in the way I use my phone. No more "Conservative Mode" which I feel like I'm always forced to be in, because of its crappy battery life. Now I have 2 backup Instinct batteries, one of which can be charging while the other is in use.

So, while this is no official battery fix, or an appropriate external Moment battery charger, it should definitely help some folks.

very good info as i came from an instinct. wonder what the difference is in the batteries? is it not a direct fit?
 
Awesome to hear another option! Does the moment battery work in the instinct charger as well, or does the instinct battery just work in the moment?

Well, Im no expert, but from the best I can tell, they are practically the same battery, with two differences.

1. Width of the battery. Moment battery is wider. Height and Depth are the same
2. mAh. I believe the OEM Instinct batteries are 1000 mah, whereas the Moment are 1440 I think.

They both use the same power transfer unit. I dont know the correct lingo but its 3 small plates (battery) that come in contact with 3 small prongs (phone).

Update on how it has worked out. I got pretty good battery life from the Instinct battery last night, but with further shock testing, the phone turned off a couple of times. Good news is that it just restarts instead of staying turned off

The moment battery doesnt fit into the instinct charger as it is too wide. But, if you were to modify the instinct external battery charger by cutting off some of the sides with a dremel it should work. You would probably need to figure out a way to stabilize the batters so that it wouldn't move around
 
My instinct batteries did not work on the moment. Am i doing something wrong? And furthermore is there any chance that this might damage the phone??

I can do a little better than that. I don't have a good ruler, but it looks just over 2" by just over 1.5". Here are some pictures, including ones with the battery inserted. I just noticed that it says blackjack II on the bottom. I was under the assumption that the ace and bj2 were the same phone except for the front styling, but perhaps the battery size is different. What's odd is that the spare battery I bought for my Ace was listed as a BJ2 battery, and it fit just fine.

Same thing at buy.com at half the price. For under twenty bucks, it was worth it for me to try it. I'll let you know if it works.

i picked up one of these and have been testing it on old batteries before i tried it on my new spare moment battery. it never fully 'charges' anything by its LEDs but the batteries seem to be full when i put them in old phones. it only seems to charge at 80 mA too so that could take a while. anyone have any updates on these or cradles?
 
awesome. let me know. that universal charger, after all night is only holding a battery at about 3.95V so i'm not sure if it just doesn't pump out enough or what, plus it always is saying its charging even after 24 hours so its hard to tell even if it was 'fully charged' so something that fits the battery, charges relatively quick and shows a complete charge for like $15 would be very worth it. esp since the girl and i have the same phone.
 
I've also got one of the Blackjack II i617 chargers and batteries on the way. I will update also.

While we wait for the Fosmon company to decide if they are going to make a charger for us.
 
Great news. The universal battery charger ends up workin pretty well, just took 18-20 hours! Plus then it appears it needs some sort of cool down time before working again. So another option would be good.
 
bump on charge times using the blackjack II cradle. my universal took about 23 hours to do a battery from 3% ish!

Thank god ive been waiting for an external charger 2 buy another battery although my moments battery has ben kicken ass the last week or so plus the battery meter has actually been accurate ever sense i did a hard reset somehow
 
Wanted to get a couple tests in before replying.

Answer: quick and apparently full charge.

I put this charger side-by-side with the "must jiggle" one I had been using (see above). Charged in same amount of time. Phone indicates battery has full charge. Real world use seems to indicate that battery has full charge.

Problem solved!!

i looked above at the 'jiggle' one, and dont' see any times listed, can u give a rough estimate how dead your battery was and how long it took for the cradle to show full?
