Root Need help choosing Voodoo Kernel

Hi all, I've been reading lots of threads about Voodoo kernels and what not, but am a little confused with all the versions out there including Ext4, overclocked, not overclocked, etc. I was wondering if someone could suggest which would be the best for me based upon the following things I want for my fascinate. Right now, I get a lag sometimes opening up different apps such as the gallery and some others, where the phone will literally be at a black screen for 1-3 seconds. Here is what I want for my phone:
I want something to fix this lag.
I want the same battery life or better, which means
I don't need/want my phone overclocked.
When the lag doesn't happen, the phone is plenty fast for me, though I wouldn't mind it being a little faster.
I want whatever kernel I use to be stable.
I want to continue using launcher pro.

I'd really appreciate advice as to which of the various kernels, JT's, Dirks, etc, would be best to have my SF meet the above conditions.

I'd go with the 0.2 Voodoo Kernel from JT (it's not overclocked). See how you like Voodoo and the battery life and from that point you should see if you want to overclock. Voodoo by itself fixes most of the lag that exists on the phone and makes it faster overall without sacrificing battery life. It is also ROCK stable, I haven't heard a report of anyone (who installed it correctly) being able to make it freeze.

Get used to voodoo enhancements and make sure you're stable then you can start looking into overclocked and undervolted kernel. Every hummingbird is different. From jt's 1000 you might decide thats plenty fast but you want improved battery life. Then you try Dirrk's 1000LV. Maybe you want a tad more boost in speed so you try a 1200. Honestly, you could make a case for each one of the 6-7 kernels out there.

Yeah, I'm new to this, so I'm definitely looking to start small and stable, and then work my way up as I get used to everything. I was getting confused with all these different kernels, with updates being released every few days or what not.

Yeah start then with jt's 1000bootanimationzip or whatever its called. Thats stock speed and stock voltage. Run whatever benchmarks tests usage you want with it and then you can start graduating up the table. There's plenty ways to go at it from here:
a] same speed lower voltage = Dirrks 1000LV
b] more speed same voltage = jt's 1200* or either of Dirrks SV's
c] more speed lower voltage = Dirrk's 1100 or 1200 LV
d] dont mess with the 1250 till after you've proved you can run 1200LV for awhile

*jt's 1200 might be overvolted by 25mv

I was just implying the improvements to the filesystem and subsequent apparent speed boosts and reduced lag; thats all

I really didn't notice any reduced lag whatsoever from installing the new kernal. I noticed an improvement when I cranked up SetCPU, but at the cost I mentioned on XDA - the dreaded black screen of mystery (or misery ...)

I ran my phone with SetCPU set to 800 for a while, and it seemed ok. I put it back up on 1200mhz and ran it all day that way. It didn't give me the black screen once. I was about to breathe a sigh of relief and call it "all good" and my phone froze after I ended a phone conversation.

Again, this is mind boggling. I didn't have a lot of crap running in the background. It ended the call just fine and showed me the screen where you can call again or send a message. I hit the back button to go call someone else and it was froze. Didn't take a battery pull this time, but I had to smash down the power and volume buttons and force a recovery restart.

Anyways, what I can't figure out is why none of the instabilty or black screens happen when I ramp up the demand on the processor. It happens on a phone call, or when it's idle. I don't know if I'm sold on these fancy kernals yet. So far it has done me zero good unless I have SetCPU cranked all the way up. And then, my phone has issues when it's idle. I'll have to give the SV a try.

Is there something in between the 1200 and SV that you would recommend?

(as an aside, the one thing I don't mind about resetting my phone is that I get to watch that awesome Windows 7 startup animation!!)

Yeah SK I feel your pain on finding the right niche. When you were cruising over in WY the other day I spent a long time testing and benching kernels. I was like in mini [H] mode . But, yes I also noticed that outside the 1250LV which I cannot get to run at all. Every other kernel I tested can run in Performance mode and benched to death for an hour. But some of them will black screen as you say from sleep and/or from something apparently much less cpu intensive. I dropped a post somewhere today dont know if it was here or xda or where it was. But there might be a possibility that LP[+] and BW might not like the voodoo kernels; but by no means am I asserting that as a plausibility, yet.
Its true about 1/4 of SF's just dont like the 1200LV and arent totally stable. Like you I'd rather have it be OK during real world use and fail at some synthetic test than vice versa. There is not anything between 1200LV and 1200SV. In fact 1200SV is in between 1200LV and jt's 1200. 1200LV runs off 1250mv, 1200SV runs off 1300mv and jt's 1200 runs of 1325mv.
Again, a lot of the difference between stock and voodoo OC only shows up in Benchmarks. So outside of that vacuum yeah does it make a tangible difference. So by way of analogy from the PC world, upgrading your video card from a 5850 to a 5970 might give you a big boost in Crysis or ME2 framerates but it might not make watching you tube vids all that different.
IMO, for real world use voodoo does/did have an overall more significant impact for real world day to day use than OCing [without voodoo]. Now without doubt or question Im glad I have both and wont trade or downgrade at all.
Like anything from our PC counterpart side, we just gotta find our niche. So while your i7 might be able to run 4.2Ghz if you need that extra .1v is it worth it? [OK of course the answer there is hell yes ] but I think with device like these which do run off battery and have that added concern sometimes we gotta make compromises. Im pretty darn content to be running a kernel which is both OC's and UV'd [undervolted]. Although admittedly if a stable 1.4Ghz kernel existed even if it ran off 1400mv I'd be on that one like white on rice in a snowstorm. But thats just how we roll [H] style

See, just putting voodoo on didn't give me a noticeable boost at all. Only cranking CPU up after voodoo gave me a noticeably "smoother" phone. And I would think I would notice. I can feel a difference going from 3.8 to 4.2 on my pc ....

Did you spend much time with just voodoo at 1Ghz? The more cpu intensive your request of the phone obviously the more you'll notice the extra clocks. So yes by all means scrolling the app drawer versus opening a web browser versus browsing the gallery will yield different results from stock depending on voodoo or OC or both. I mean at the end of the day I still vote for both. If voodoo is giving you problems by all means disable/remove it. Same difference with the OC, not everyone can run the higher speed so they downclock or return to stock.

Well, I just got off a very long phone call with a distraught client. I put the phone to sleep. After I took it out of my pocket, the screen was black again. I powered it up and it said battery 0%!!! So, was it instability because of voodoo? Or just a dead battery?

Here's to hoping it's just that my battery died. I wasn't expecting that long of a phone call when I told you I still had 14% left ...

(Edit: I just realized that I had SetCPU set to performance at 1.2GHz for the whole entire phone call! Arg!! And I can't find my charger anywhere because I'm at work!!! Dismay! Dismay!!)
