Root Need help... possible brick

DaBigFisch

Newbie
revolutionary,mikmik 3.0

I had to do a factory reset on my Evo 4G so I could transfer it to my kid (I picked up the 4G LTE last night). So After I transferred the phone to his # and name I went back and put mikmik 3.11 so he would have the newer mikmik to run with. Right after that (of course after using superwipe) flashed the radios that I had downloaded with mikmik 3.0. Right after this was done the phone had a small display picture in the middle of the screen. Since then the phone will not turn on, not show a charging light or anything. I installed a fresh battery and all thinking it was that, but no.

Brick?

any help would be nice. The kid is bugging me for his new EVO. Thanks in advance!

So after you flashed MikG3.11, you used superwipe, then flashed the radios?

yes, in that exact order.
Well when you flashed superwipe before the radio flash, you wiped out not only cache (which is fine), but boot and system. (rom and kernel).
Before we deal with that, when that small display picture was on the screen, do you remember what is was? And did it go away or did you pull battery while the picture was on screen?

If I remember correctly it looked like the phone at an angle. I waited about 2 min and then pulled the battery. I screwed up bad didn't I?

ummm, probably.... it was still updating at that point. I am pretty sure you bricked it. Pulling a battery while updating radios will brick the phone.
I am also pretty sure there is no going back. 99.98% sure.
:(
Read this about updating the radio, in particular step 5a.

Edit: also this

Yep, you bricked it.

For future reference, superwipe comes before your ROM flash. It wouldnt have helped you in this instance, but for your replacement.

Very similarly, I just did something very similar with my Evo 4G to give it to my kid, Revolutionary and Mik, but did a "factory reset" including the SD card. It went into recovery and I quite out if it, but now I can't get back into it and now it just comes up with the MikMik wallpaper and shows the time and signal strength, but that's it. No button inputs will do anything. Computer recognizes when it's connected via USB but won't show the phone as a drive (although I've had problems with that before, so it might be a separate issue).

In other words, I can't do anything with it at this point. Any advice? Or is it toast like DaBigFisch's?

No, not the same issue. I have too many beers in me at this point, so here's as clear as I can be.

If you pull the battery while the radio is flashing, then you're screwed. It's pretty much the one surefire way to brick your device.

If you're getting it to boot up but is messed up, I would do a full wipe and then re-flash the rom. By a full wipe, I mean:

use this as your recovery
[RECOVERY][MOD][1-June-2012] RA-supersonic-v4.3-smelkusMOD - xda-developers

My wiping process every single time is to

Factory reset one time
wipe caches one time
format-all one time

Wiping multiple times is pointless because on Amon RA 2.3 and all recoveries based on it wipe correctly the first time. This is exactly what I do and I never have any issues.

Then reflash the rom and you should be golden.

As you found out, you should never pull battery while flashing radios. I hope you can get a new phone. With that said, I have flashed radios multiple times and I don't think it's ever taken 5 minutes.

You can't do a factory reset on mikg because it stores important parts of the rom on the data partition. So when you wipe that by doing a factory reset the whole rom isn't there anymore.

If you re flash the rom you'll be up and running again.

You are NOT bricked :D

Well, if you wiped your sd card, we have to get a rom back onto it.
And the fact that you cannot mount you phone as a disk drive might be an issue.
Either try a different cord, or plug into a different usb port on computer, or try to hold/wiggle the usb cord by phone so you can mount as disk drive to transfer rom from computer to sd card.
Once you get rom onto sd card somehow, press and hold volume down while pressing power. That will get you into the bootloader screen and from there get into recovery where you can wipe all (except sd card) then reflash rom.
As Rx and Mizzou said, not the same issue and you are not bricked.
The problem I think, lies in getting a rom back onto your blank sd card due to the fact you said you had an issue with mounting phone as disk drive.
:)

Edit: stupid me, just pull sd card out of phone, use a card reader to put into computer then put rom on sd card...(it's early)....

Thanks for all the help, people! And sorry for the thread hijack, DaBigFisch. :-) Both of my card readers are messed up, but as soon as I get another I'll get the Mik ROM on there and try to get to the bootloader screen.

Hey.....I've got a couple old HTC Heros. I could put the zip file on the SD through that phone, then slide 'er into the Evo.

I suppose you could do that but the only thought I would have is your Evo trying to read something off of the Hero card besides the Mikg rom and have something go wonky. Not sure tho.
Maybe format the card first, then download rom to card, the insert into Evo.?

Well all, Thank you for all of your help. Sorry I didn't back sooner to ya all. I was able to take it to Sprint and they opened it up and said it was dead. Without a question I was sent a re-furb'd phone. It made my day. Of course as soon as I got home it was rooted.
