Help Need help with bootloader

First let me say that I'm not technical at all. My phone is stuck on the HTC start up screen. I'm about ready to cry since I have a lot of important pictures on the phone. All I care about are the pictures, everything else can be recreated if needed. The battery seems to have bulged as though overheated, but still charges and seems to power the phone.

I have done the following and have had no success:
- Took out the battery and restarted
- Got into the "HBOOT" menu and tried fastboot from the boot menu
- Did recovery from the boot menu and got the phone picture with the red triangle and the exclamation point. Once in the red triangle screen I got a sub menu by pushing the volume up button and power button. In this MS DOS looking menu I have the following options

- "Reboot system now" nothing except the frozen HTC screen when this is done
- "Apply update from external storage" Have not tried since I don't have an SD card
- "Wipe data/factory reset" Too scared to try this. Don't know what it does
- "Wipe cache partition" Too scared to try this. Don't know what it does
- "Apply update from cache" Tried this and got an "Invalid operation" message and then back to white HTC screen.

Below the menu outlined above it lists 3 lines:
"E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command"
"E: Can't mount /data/data/recovery/log"
"E: Can't open /data/data/recovery/log"

I'm looking for my next option. Can I get a micro SD card and give it something to boot off of? I have not clue what ROMs, RUUs, flashing, rooting or other lingo means. I'm just really hoping that I can get it on long enough to back up my photos and then do a factory reset. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll need things spelled out very clearly and in plain english. I can also provide you with my email or a phone number if you private message me.
Thanks.

My HTC Vivid is displaying exactly the same symptoms. I've tried everything including a reset to default factory settings but never get beyond the red triangle with the exclamation point.
