Root Need Help with Recovery

iberucks

Lurker
Hello I'm new to the forums and I'm loving everything about it! First thing I gotta say is I'm a complete NOOB with all the rooting and recovery stuff...though I am computer literate and was able to root my Evo 4g from "ocnbrze" HTCdev method and it went great (here is the link http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html).

I did each step 1,2,3 and used the ADB method for step 2.

Now to get to my question.

I recently downloaded a few apps and noticed I was getting these weird pop up alerts for random stuff and to like hotels. I figured I installed an app with a dirty file, but can't figure out which app it was. So I deleted the last few apps which I know was causing this spam alerts on my phone. That did not work so my last resort was to "flash a recovery"...excuse my ignorance but I'm still learning and I'm not even sure if that's what you call it.

What I want to do is get the phone back to the day I first rooted it. I did follow the step 1, 2, 3 exactly, but I am not sure if the process created a back up or not. If so what are the correct steps I need to do this. A step by step wouldn't be bad.

I'm sure this has been brought up before so I searched the forums and I was unable to find anything to help me out. It might of been that I was typing in the wrong info as in "flash recovery".

Thank you guys in advance.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!
ok if you followed the guide then you should have a recovery. there is no need to flash a recovery. flash is just basically another term for install that is done thru recovery. so i'm not sure what you mean by "flash recovery"

if you mean making a nandroid backup then go to the second post of the guide and it should talk you thru how to make a nandroid backup and what it is. until you know what you are doing, you should always make a nandroid backup. they are handy in case something goes wrong. you can always restore a nandroid backup and start over.

now since i'm assuming you did not make one, you will need to re-flash the rom that you are on. if you are not on a custom rom, then now is the time to flash one. the guide has instructions for it as well.

hope that helps, please feel to ask more questions if you have them.

Thank you for your quick response and great root guide!

Sorry once again if I sound like I'm not sure what I'm talking about.

I used "HTCdev" method to unlock, ADB command method for recovery and flashed SU file and stayed on stock rom.

Basically from what you said I will need to re-flash my rom to get it back the way I had it the first day I rooted my phone.

Sorry if I missed this on the guide, but how would go about re-flashing my rom?

I was to afraid to to flash a custom rom, because I just like the simple look to the stock rom and I'm a bit afraid to do it lol. I would give it a try with your guide.

Thank you for your help! :D

first off please do not be sorry for being new at this. we were all noobs at one time.

second i would try mikg3.11. it is very stock like and not themed at all. it is very stable and a great rom as well. the directions are in the guide. it is in step 3 to flash a rom. or you can go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html for a list of roms to try. the staff picks are great suggestions to try out as well. also read the second post. there are some great info there as well.

Hmmm I did step 3 and re-flashed the SU file (*edit* I just noticed you said "not a rom") and it completed, but after it was done rebooting I still had all the apps.

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I wanted to basically re-flash to get everything off my phone (clean slate) the way it was the first day I rooted no apps installed but the stock sprint bloatware. Basically how do I re-flash my stock rom? If even possible?

I'm reading step 3 again after I submit my reply just in case I miss read something.

*Edit* If I flash a custom rom will it make a clean slate and remove all the apps I installed? If so I might want to do this since I want to get rid of whatever dirty app I installed to stop spamming me junk alerts lol.

Thank you once again.

step 3 has two choices flash the su file (this only gives you permission to change the system partitions. in other words, this will allow root apps to work). the second choice is to flash a rom. follow those instructions there.

Ah ok. I will follow the second choice and hopefully get what I'm looking for. Thank you. :D

no worries. keep us posted on how it went. if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Well that rom that you recommended is very much close to the stock version and a bit more cleaned up and little extra features that are nice. I achieved what I wanted by cleaning house and got a clean new start. Thanks!

I've read that the new mik3g rom drains battery quicker (something to do with kernal I'm not sure just read it on here somewhere), but to be honest I've recently had issues with battery life even before I rooted or installed this new rom.

Not trying to get out of subject, but if i flash a new kernal would that help to increase battery life if not than its ok I just probably need a new phone lol. If flashing a new kernal will help can you direct me to the right place on here to get more info or direct link to this kernal.

Thank you very much!

like i said in the guide, mikg is waaaaaaaay better then stock. i glad you like it. it is the kernel that will help with battery life and not so much with the rom. so yes trying custom kernels will definitely help out. but not all kernels will react the same way as it will for you and me.

here is some info on kernels: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html

you can find most kernels here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html

also the second post has more info on roms and kernels that you should check out.
